[13:03:16] peterbennett: stuarta: I am working on capture cards setup for DVB. I assume the DiSEqC stuff is still used? I think it is mainly for Europe, probably satellite users in the USA cannot record except by HDPVR or something similar.
[13:03:48] stuarta: yes diseq is relevant for satellite systems which can access multiple satellites
[13:04:15] peterbennett: ok
[13:04:30] peterbennett: somebody else will have to test it.
[13:04:53] stuarta: it'll have to be a user, i don't think any of the devs have a diseq setup
[13:05:29] stuarta: i have satellite, but it only points to 1 satellite, thus diseq is not required
[13:05:56] peterbennett: So do you use DVB with it?
[13:06:10] stuarta: yes dvb-s/s2
[13:06:40] stuarta: in some terrible ascii art
[13:07:05] stuarta: normal = dvb-s2 card -> LNB
[13:07:32] peterbennett: Even if you only have 1 satellite, there is lnb part of the setup that is part of diseqc
[13:07:40] stuarta: diseq = dvb-s2 card -> diseq switch -> [LNB1|LNB2...]
[13:08:19] stuarta: i need to get my dish fixed. currently can't lock on to anything
[13:08:47] peterbennett: I assume you still use the LNB part of DVB setup, which is in the diseq section.
[13:09:07] stuarta: i'd have to check, it's so long since i last did it
[13:09:57] peterbennett: The setup allows you to set an infinite chain with unicables, switches, rotors as may as you want, although I think that is not valid.
[13:10:40] stuarta: unicable is another variation
[13:10:57] stuarta: but yes, i don't really expect more than 1 maybe 2 levels of switches before the LNB
[13:12:16] peterbennett: I will replicate what it does currently so users can shoot themselves in the foot just as easily as they can now.
[13:12:57] stuarta: :-)
[13:13:28] peterbennett: I have to set up apis that read, updated, delet the eqc stuff. There is nothing currently.
[13:13:45] peterbennett: diseq
[13:14:35] stuarta: nope, nor anything to do with scanning. <- i have some very firm ideas on that
[13:15:25] peterbennett: The code makes the wild assumption that all of your satellite dishes have the same longitude and latitude, so if you change it on one it magically chanes on the others.
[13:16:22] stuarta: well that's certainly not true in a multi satellite diseq setup
[13:16:38] stuarta: btw. confirmed that the diseq menu is the way forward to set things up
[13:16:54] stuarta: but do we really want to replicate the hard to use setup here?
[13:17:03] stuarta: this is one of the areas where improvement is possible
[13:17:21] peterbennett: Is there a diseqc menu that is separate from setup?
[13:18:00] peterbennett: Or a better way to do it?
[13:18:18] stuarta: oh there's definitely a better way to do it
[13:19:35] stuarta: a typical end user would not have the faintest clue what diseq is. they have a satellite dish on the side of the house, and a dvb card
[13:19:44] peterbennett: OK Maybe I should just do the normal DVB setup and leave the diseqc until we have a better way
[13:19:57] stuarta: it's how we present it
[13:20:26] stuarta: add dvb-s/s2 card, add satellite dish
[13:20:29] peterbennett: Most of the setup is for a technical user
[13:20:35] stuarta: anything else is "advanced" setup
[13:20:54] stuarta: correct
[13:21:06] stuarta: so we should make the 99% case easy
[13:21:41] stuarta: this is more about UI / UX design than the technicals of the API
[13:22:35] stuarta: just think of a non technical relative trying to set this up, that is what i'm aiming at
[13:23:15] peterbennett: So the default setup is just dvb -> LNB
[13:23:28] stuarta: 99% of the time yes
[13:24:26] peterbennett: That looks quite simple, they just have to select from a list unless they choose custom
[13:24:40] stuarta: yep
[13:25:21] stuarta: the API needs to be able to handle custom, initially the web app needs to be able to handle the 99% case, and we can work later on diseq/unicable etc
[13:25:32] peterbennett: Maybe some terminology should change, like call it "Satellite Dish" instead of LNB in setup.
[13:25:44] stuarta: exactly.
[13:26:33] peterbennett: Will end users know the difference between Univerasl(Europe), Single(Europe)?
[13:26:44] peterbennett: Will they know what CBand is?
[13:27:15] stuarta: only users in the country where that's used
[13:27:31] stuarta: tbh, most are universal
[13:27:44] stuarta: at least in the UK
[13:28:43] peterbennett: It has Circular and Linear options for N America and I have no idea what that is, probably only applies in Canada.
[13:32:31] SteveGoodey (SteveGoodey!~steve@2a00:23c5:7d83:6501:7a24:afff:fe9d:c233) has joined #mythtv
[13:32:46] stuarta: "Circular polarisation is widely used at C band (4/6 GHz). It is ideal in tropical areas since the ionosphere causes changes in the rotation of the polarisation and this adversely affects linear polarisation. If you are in tropical area and using C band, then circular polarisation is preferred. The phenomena is called Faraday Rotation. It is far worse at low frequencies like L band (1.5 GHz) as used by
[13:32:52] stuarta: Inmarsat, and negligible at higher frequencies like Ku band (11/14 GHz)."
[13:34:08] peterbennett: ok
[13:35:29] stuarta: sounds like it's primarily for either communications or mobile setups
[13:37:09] peterbennett: Those are in the MythTV setups now.
[13:38:16] peterbennett: I suppose there could be obsolete settings there that are never used.

[13:48:52] stuarta: those types of systems are becoming less common, apart from systems to distribute satellite around apartment blocks (which iirc is unicable)
