[00:00:32] mack: I am out of my element for a problem like that. Maybe one of the other folks here has an idea.
[00:00:50] Sabotender: yes, for the longest time, things seem to have been nice, with no issue. I have a sneaking suspicion that this may be a Linux Display manager problem. I would have tried this in VLC, but, unfortunately, mythtv obfuscates file names for recorded programmes, so it is difficult to tell which file goes to which, thus, it is quite difficult to test the same file.
[00:00:52] mack: Your desktop isn't running Wayland is it
[00:01:10] ** Sabotender gasps **
[00:01:28] Sabotender: Yes, I think its Wayland
[00:01:50] mack: try logging in to x11 and trying again
[00:01:55] Sabotender: I don't have that much knowledge in Linux order to know the difference.
[00:02:35] Sabotender: Oh wait, its X11. I actually recognise that one.
[00:03:15] Sabotender: that's the only one I have installed… Do you think, perhaps, that I should try something different?
[00:05:06] Sabotender: I have had those wonky display problems from day one. remember, I think I mentioned, that it wouldn't keep the perfect resolution, when I turned off my TV, because, Linux would interpret that as a monitor/display had been unplugged. I worked out, and changed a setting to wear there would be a continuous video signal sent to HDMI, regardless whether or not the TV were on or off.
[00:05:44] mack: if you're recently done a big OS update it might have switched. Running echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE from the terminal would return "x11" if you're on it.
[00:06:16] Sabotender: Oooh! Give me a wee mo and Ill check
[00:08:06] mack: I remember you said you were having resolution problems on power off. But I thought I remembered you saying you were happy with pixel perfect playback after you upgraded your antenna.
[00:10:31] Sabotender: hmm
[00:13:29] Sabotender: that returns nothing. I must be making typos.
[00:14:29] Sabotender: oh LOL!
[00:14:41] mack: forget the echo?
[00:14:44] Sabotender: it returned X11
[00:15:10] Sabotender: yeah I forgot the echo. 😅
[00:15:29] mack: ah ok. I'm glad the Wayland variable has been eliminated.
[00:17:14] Sabotender: Me, as well. Not sure why this keeps happening.
[00:18:55] mack: I forget – are you running backend and frontend on the same machine?
[00:19:11] Sabotender: in regard to the pixel perfect playback, yes, it was brilliant, with no problems, besides the few Poor recordings, here and there. But this pulling on the side of the recordings, image are on every recording, which gave me the impression there was a geometry problem.
[00:19:25] Sabotender: yes, I am.
[00:20:24] Sabotender: Its a dual mythbox
[00:21:57] mack: the AI summary of results for "mythtv frontend smearing" has some promising – looking suggestions
[00:22:35] Sabotender: Wow nice, doin da ChatGPT
[00:24:31] mack: "tearing" might be a better keyword, come to think of it
[00:25:23] Sabotender: Hmm it might be tearing

[19:59:49] Sabotender: mack: I'm gonna install Kodi right now, but I am a bit scaryface; I hope it doesnt break anything, and integrates well with mythtv backend
[20:00:52] mack: kodi is pretty easy. It only requires the pvr.mythtv plugin to work with mythbackend.
[20:02:11] Sabotender: oh, I see. I have a guide here, I'm not sure if it will install that plug-in, but, it sounds like it is #1 important
[20:02:11] ** MythLogBot https://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/1 **
[20:02:27] Sabotender: ooh, danke
[20:03:06] mack: Something else I thought of : Since you're familiar with mythtv concepts now, maybe reset the frontend settings to defaults and set up the backend connection again and see how the picture is. Then knowing what you know now, twiddle settings.
[20:03:29] mack: I know you've made a lot of stabs in the dark early on.
[20:05:39] mack: without the frontend running, mythfrontend --reset does that I think.
[20:06:33] Sabotender: Hmm. It is possible to have the Frontend still installed, along with Kodi, correct?
[20:06:45] mack: yes
[20:07:19] Sabotender: I noticed an anti-tearing method for Kodi, and I wanted to try that
[20:10:13] mack: for kodi, make sure it can play a local video successfully before installing the mythtv addon, just to do things one step at a time.
[20:23:02] Sabotender: This really suxor because I also triedinstalling the ppa for comtiz, which is something that I REALLY need; and they don't have release files, and have thus been disabled by default (thanks xubuntu)
[20:29:24] Sabotender: I may be better off just compiling the source, as I mentioned earlier. It's a buncha trouble, but should be worth it, especially if I ensure that all the whatnots are included
