[00:42:54] mack: Sabotender: A Job is basically a task for mythbackend to perform. It could be record, transcode, metadata lookup, any user script..... pretty much any task.
[00:43:32] Sabotender: Oh, sweet, thanks! I am still configuring this thing, LOL.
[00:44:13] Sabotender: I added the homerun tuner. I hope that's correct.
[00:45:50] Sabotender: Should I ticked the box for unencrypted only? I think this can tune encrypted channels…
[00:50:26] mack: The underpowered question is hard to answer because it depends on what you're wanting to do. Some jobs would be limited by CPU, some by bus, some by disk, some by network. Most modern hardware won't be limited by CPU unless maybe you're transcoding lots of 4K things. Lower speed USB can be easily overwhelmed if using for recording storage. Some hardware may have trouble with HD or 4K playback.
[00:52:23] mack: You can try leaving the box unticked. If it doesn't work, go back later and tick it. But just an HDHR for over-the-air recording can't decode encrypted broadcasts.
[00:53:45] Sabotender: ah, that makes sense. I opened the hardware test section where are you can compare your CPU model. Mine was A little over 5K. I think that my system will be appropriate for the task 😛
[00:55:28] mack: the very last sentence of this page: https://www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun/
[00:56:20] mack: (basically HDHR will use ATSC 1 if it encounters an encrypted ATSC 3)
[01:02:29] Sabotender: Huh, I understand it now. I just scanned for channels. Very pleased my fox was found. i'm trying to find the section where I can select the hdd location for recordings
[01:03:09] mack: I'm assuming you're in the United States since we're talking about ATSC. Here's a list of ATSC 3 stations and the encrypted ones are highlighted in red. https://www.rabbitears.info/market.php?request=atsc3
[01:04:57] Sabotender: Yes, been in the States for several years now.
[01:09:49] mack: locations for recordings are called Storage Groups.
[01:11:21] mack: You may add multiple locations for a group (for capacity or load balancing) or just add one directory if that's your setup. You can always add one now and add more later if you need.
[01:11:22] Sabotender: Ah, I will fill in the default storage group
[01:11:43] mack: some light reading, lol. https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Setup_Storage_Directories
[01:13:00] Sabotender: oh, ffs, lawl 😅
[01:16:05] mack: mythtv has had a lot of years to make detailed documentation
[01:17:25] Sabotender: I swear, I am trying to do this without having to ask a millionty-billion questions
[01:31:18] Sabotender: ...I believe I have reached the end of configuration
[01:31:54] Sabotender: I restarted the backend, and I did not receive any errors.
[01:41:09] mack: always a good sigh
[01:41:13] mack: sign, too
[01:42:35] Sabotender: this front end has incorrect group membership.
[01:42:35] Sabotender: Am I not allowed to run the front end as my main user?
[01:55:22] mack: yes, you can. There is a section in the wiki about user permissions
[01:55:35] Sabotender: Okay added group, ran frontend, has brilliant channel listings, mouse rolled to random channel, right click on a selected watch channel. Please wait was shown, and then goes back to channel listing
[02:18:05] Sabotender: ah well. Its almost there, I am sure of it! If I am able to download the channel listings from over the air, that means something is working correctly. And the channel detection was successful. I don't have a picture yet, which likely means I cannot schedule any recordings. 😄
[04:55:34] mack: I would take mythtv out of the loop for troubleshooting and install hdhomerun-config-gui to see if you're getting a picture right out of the HDHR.
[04:55:55] mack: apt install hdhomerun-config-gui
[04:57:01] mack: It might be something as simple as your antenna reception.
[05:40:14] Sabotender: Hmm, installed the utility you recommended, and, it shows 100 strength, about 70% quality for the signal, and 100% symbol quality. I am not able to open viewing of those channels, because I get error opening VLC. VLC is installed.

[06:21:11] mack: that's a bit odd.
[06:26:11] mack: vlc plays other media fine?
[06:27:36] Sabotender: I have been checking the net if there's anything that can try to get the config to launch vlc but no luck
[06:29:04] Sabotender: I did read one website, however, that there is some sort of bug in relation to the hd homerun tuner not being able to be launched any streams, but older versions worked fine.
[06:31:59] Sabotender: ZOMG!!!!!
[06:33:08] Sabotender: I just remembered something! This is what you told me. tuner channel 0 is currently rubbish, and cannot be reached. I switched to channel 1, and I get streams!
[06:34:50] Sabotender: i'm trying to not get so emotional, because I had been seriously gutted. lol
[06:35:07] Sabotender: you may never have seen a cactus blush. 😅
[06:37:24] mack: I don't remember saying anything about channel 0 :)
[06:38:18] mack: So you're seeing a broadcast right off the HDHR, or in mythtv (which would imply both)
[06:42:03] mack: oops, forgot the question mark.
[06:51:21] Sabotender: no, I meant tuner 0
[06:53:27] Sabotender: not channel 0. that was my mistake. You mentioned that not all of the tuners where accessible, despite there being 4 in this device. I was just wondering how I could access tuner 1 instead in mythsetup
[06:54:11] Sabotender: myth needs to be reconfigured, to reflect what I discovered in VLC.
[06:56:42] mack: tuner0 should still pick up. There's just two tuners that do atsc1 and atsc3, and the other two just do atsc1
[06:57:40] Sabotender: Lol. i'm trying to give you all of the credit here.
[06:58:18] mack: did you turn on EIT for guide info? If you chose Active scanning, tuner0 might be busy with EIT ... assuming mythbackend was still running.
[06:59:02] Sabotender: I had done nothing over there, because I was not able to tune any channels.
[07:10:01] Sabotender: okay, I want to reconfigure this thing 😛

[07:31:20] Sabotender: ahh I did enable EIT for guide info
[07:31:45] Sabotender: so, perhaps I should disable it.
[07:58:05] mack: When you get everything set up and want to schedule recordings, you will likely find EIT doesn't really have enough data to be very useful.

[13:44:08] Sabotender: Hmm. I am going to try to configure myth with my tuner now that I am certain that my tuner works, because, I was not certain; I appreciate your encouraging me to try it with VLC player.

[19:55:33] Sabotender: Hmm I have reconfigured some settings like the loopback addressing range… Because during my search, it is possible that I have no television feed because of a database error, but this may be a network connection error.
