[13:38:05] Steve_Goodey: Err, how does that work?
[13:41:53] frobnic: compressing encrypted or already compressed data. but i don't think that this is the case here.
[13:42:33] stuarta: Steve_Goodey: basically keeping lots of logs, with no housekeeping turned on. me--
[13:43:10] stuarta: i've now done the configuration for it, but there's a build going, so i have to wait before i restart it
[13:45:01] stuarta: paul-h: did you have a patch for the ansible playbooks to add libgnutls-dev packages? if not can work on it

[13:50:53] paul-h: stuarta: sorry no I don't I have never used it
[13:51:19] stuarta: no worries, it's pretty trivial to add an extra page to the list
[13:51:54] stuarta: those playbooks have made setting up the build dependencies *much* easier
[13:59:21] paul-h: I'm still looking at getting the correct branch and version in the Ubuntu builds. I can now build the packages locally again but unfortunately it doesn't help since the LaunchPad builds behave differently :(
[14:01:10] paul-h: It's not helped by the "Expert Debian Dev" breaking the packaging scripts with his patches
[14:01:39] stuarta: :-/
[14:04:07] stuarta: bah, why does ubuntu have libgnutls30 and libgnutls28-dev
[14:04:42] paul-h: That confused me as well :) I have no idea
[14:05:15] stuarta: which is a pain, because the virtual package libgnutls-dev isn't installable :(
[14:06:13] paul-h: I did check all the Ubuntu versions we support have those available though
[14:09:41] stuarta: the same curiosity applies to debian as well
[14:16:23] hampton: stuarta: Are you sill waiting to restart the build master? I have a fix to push.
[14:17:55] stuarta: hampton: yes, but you may as well go for it, the quick builders will be done in no time, and the slow ones will have to deal with the restart
[14:18:15] stuarta: the last build has taken more than the usual time

[15:17:24] stuarta: at this rate the slow builders will be finished before my ubuntu-20.04 builder
[15:17:33] stuarta: this is what happens when you apply updates
[15:17:41] stuarta: and add extra packages
[15:21:07] stuarta: hmmm, freebsd isn't finding the python bits, despite them being installed. wonder if it's missing /usr/local in the python search path
[15:22:48] stuarta: ok, so python knows where to look, we just didn't find python
[15:27:34] stuarta: hmm, we look for the default of python3, which doesn't exist, but python does (->python2), we also have python2.7 and python3.6

[16:30:35] stuarta: well the janitor build should run overnight and do some housekeeping
[18:32:19] ** hampton sighs **
[18:32:37] hampton: I updated one of my frontends and not it has no audio.
[18:33:32] hampton: I've rolled back myth and rolled back the kernel upgrade, but still no audio. The kernel shows the right EDID info, but myth isn't seeing it. :-(
[18:44:49] peterbennett: hampton: HDMI audio?
[18:45:02] hampton: Yes.
[18:45:23] peterbennett: I have this problem on a laptop
[18:45:46] hampton: I'm poking around in /proc/asound and alsa doesn't show the monitor as present (comparing it to an identical working box).
[18:46:01] peterbennett: I click audio mixer and it loses the hdmi audio.
[18:46:23] peterbennett: Are you using pulseaudio?
[18:46:41] hampton: no, I have myth set to use alsa directly
[18:47:10] peterbennett: you have pulseaudio disabled?
[18:47:45] hampton: I don't remember taking any explicit steps. I think myth is doing that for me automatically.
[18:48:27] peterbennett: does "pidof pulseaudio" show anything?
[18:48:48] hampton: yes.
[18:49:07] hampton: this box was working fine last night. The only thing I've done is a 'dnf update'
[18:49:21] peterbennett: OK so pulseaudio is running.
[18:49:52] peterbennett: I guess you should either get rid of pulseaudio or try to make sure it sees the HDMI
[18:50:21] peterbennett: Unfortunately just killing pulseaudio does not help, it restarts itself
[18:50:45] hampton: My working system also shows that pulseaudio is running, so I don't think that's it.
[18:51:30] peterbennett: try pacmd load-module module-detect
[18:52:15] peterbennett: That normally fixes it on my laptop
[18:52:46] peterbennett: or pactl load-module module-detect
[18:53:59] peterbennett: It also used to work on my laptop then one day started to fail
[18:54:46] hampton: pulseaudio doesn't want to talk to me on either working or non-working box, but then again I'm on a ssh connection on both
[18:55:10] peterbennett: Yes I think running that on ssh is problematic
[18:56:58] peterbennett: to disable pulseaudio you need to change /etc/pulse/client.conf uncomment the line autospawn=yes and replace the yes with a "no"
[18:57:26] peterbennett: also make sure it is not started in window manager, also run pulseaudio -k
[18:57:51] hampton: What I'm trying to chase now is that a "cat /proc/asound/card0/eld#2.0" on the good box says "monitor_present 1 eld_valid 1" along with a list of all the available audio modes, and on the problem box it just says "monitor_present 0 eld_valid 0".
[18:59:59] peterbennett: on my laptop that says monitor_present 0 eld_valid 0
[19:00:57] hampton: That's despite the fact that "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-DP-1/edid" on both says the same thing (although I did force that in the kernel boot parameters.)
[19:01:34] hampton: If you try different card and eld numbers I suspect you'll find one that says the monitor is present.
[19:01:42] peterbennett: On my desktop that just says no such file or directory
[19:02:10] hampton: Right, your pci devices are different from mine.
[19:03:59] peterbennett: Once I plug in a monitor, the laptop says a whole bunch of stuff to that command.
[19:04:12] hampton: What's maddening is that I'm back to the same kernel that worked yesterday, and its not working today.
[19:05:47] peterbennett: So not the same problem as I had seen
[19:08:28] hampton: alsa didn't get upgraded this morning, but pulseaudio did. It went from 13.99.1–1 to 13.99.1–3, but the "upgraded" version is whats been on the working box for weeks.
[19:09:52] peterbennett: i have pulseaudio 11.1
[19:10:24] peterbennett: I am still on ubuntu 18.04

[21:01:35] hampton: So, I appear to have some sort of race issue. If I unplug/replug the hdmi cable, alsa shows that the monitor is present and has all the right audio attributes. Reboot... no audio. Unplug/replug the cable... audio. Maybe something to do with me forcing the ELD?
[21:02:14] stuarta: ugly

[22:05:36] hampton: Yep. Ugly. I've just found an ugly solution too. If I force the drm off on that hdmi port, and then tell it to autodetect that port, it will find the ELD and work properly.
[22:13:34] stuarta: yay, janitor run compled. cleaned up nearly 1 million log chunks
[22:13:49] stuarta: not seeing much of a DB reduction though. oh well
[22:14:12] stuarta: anyway, time for bed

[22:55:04] hampton: So, I solved the problem by adding the EDID file to the initramfs (not just the filesystem) so it can be found the first time the kernel initializes drm. Not sure how I survived this long without doing that.
[22:56:28] hampton: Waste of half a day.
