[14:37:24] | mkbloke: | I see that somebody on the mythtv-users mailing list was asking about building a front-end for Mac. There seems to be some confusing information about it in the MythTV wiki, i.e. https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MythTV_on_Mac_OSX_build and https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Building_Myth_for_Mac_with_MacPorts What does the current buildbot do? Is there any public access to the buildbot configs and build scripts |
[14:37:30] | mkbloke: | for Mac? I've been thinking about perhaps using an auto-updating fork of the mythtv github repo to trigger a Travis CI Mac build... |

[21:14:23] | gigem: | peterbennett: Have you transcoded much 1080i content that isn't movies? I've done a lot of 1080i movies to h265 and handbrake detelecines them to 1080p24 fine. I'm now looking to transcode some television shows that are truly 30 fps. My thinking is it's best to leave them interlaced and keep the temporal resolution rather than deinterlace them to 1080p30. Apparently that can't be done with h265 but can be |
[21:14:25] | gigem: | with h264. The space savings aren't as great so I'm trying to decide if it's worth it or not. |

[22:57:02] | gigem: | peterbennett: Aren't most of your channels 720p, though, since you're on Comcast? As I understand it, handbrake can't preserve interlacing. I had to use ffmpeg with non-default options to do it. |
[22:57:45] | peterbennett: | gigem: The broadcast channels are 1080i and the cable channes are 720p |
[22:59:11] | peterbennett: | I use the decomb option with handbrake, it may not be the best thing to do |
[23:00:26] | peterbennett: | decomb is supposed to automatically detect interlace and handle it if necessary |
[23:01:10] | peterbennett: | I have never noticed any visual interlace, but maybe the movement is not as smooth as it could be |

[23:35:23] | gigem: | peterbennett: Sorry, I wasn't clear enough on what I'm really asking about. With movies, the original content was progressive at 24 fps so the detelecining that handbrake does is simply restoring the content to it's original frame rate. The result is there is no real loss in temporal resolution. With TV, however, the original content was likely progressive at 60 fps or less likely interlaced at 30 fps. |
[23:35:25] | gigem: | Either way, deinterlacing a 1080i broadcast of that content to progressive 30 fps *will definitely* lose temporal resolution. My gut tells me it's better to leave the content as interlaced 30 fps when transcoding since a good, 2x deinterlacer will preserve more temporal resolution. That's my gut, though, so I'm asking for opinions of people who have actually done it. |
