[16:21:20] gigem: peterbennett: I pinged a few ffmpeg developers on the state of their mediacodec support. Only one replied so far, but he pretty strongly recommended targeting ffmpeg 4.0 (aka current master). He said the mediacodec support has seen significant changes in the last few months.
[16:47:59] mad_enz (mad_enz!~mad_enz@2607:fea8:bdf:e784:e8c3:f2e3:7617:f4c7) has quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)
[16:51:27] peterbennett: gigem: I wonder what others are doing for mediacodec.
[16:52:37] peterbennett: I wonder when ffmpeg 4.0 comes out
[16:53:31] peterbennett: I plan to change the config before the next ffmpeg merge to make merging easier
[16:54:46] gigem: peterbennett: Both kodi and vlc use their own interface.
[16:55:25] peterbennett: They don't use ffmpeg?
[16:58:39] gigem: I asked about the timing of 4.0 and didn't get an answer. I checked the ffmpeg mailing list, and in February, there was discussion about calling 4.0 instead of 3.5. Also in that discussion was the comment that went rougly, it's been 4 months since the 3.4 release, it's time for a new release. My guess is that 4.0 will be released sooner rather than later. I know Debian has been sending out "fails to build
[16:58:40] gigem: from source" bug reports for packages that don't build with ffmpeg 4.0.
[16:59:30] gigem: They might use ffmpeg for other things, but no, they both appear to interface to mediacodec directly.
[17:02:11] peterbennett: I am working on the osd navigation, should be finished soon.

[19:07:07] gigem: peterbennett: I know you're tied up. I'd still like to do what I can in the interim.
[19:07:11] gigem: Does that mean you're amenable to targeting ffmpeg 4.0? I realized my checkout of ffmpeg master was a bit dated since I'd mainly been looking at 3.4. After updating, I saw there were quite a few more important looking mediacodec changes than the ones I'd already seen. The most imprortant ones better deal with devices that automatically double-rate deinterlace. I'm pretty sure those include the Nvidia
[19:07:13] gigem: Shield and many/most Amlogic devices. If we want to handle those devices properly, which we should, I think we either need to use ffmpeg 4.0 or access mediacode directly.
[19:08:46] peterbennett: Sure, we can target ffmpeg 4
[19:10:02] peterbennett: I am not sure how mediacodec is implemented in ffmpeg
[19:11:35] peterbennett: On the page http://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/HWAccelIntro it shows MediaCodec Decoder as "Standalone" where others are "Internal"
[19:11:50] peterbennett: I don';t know what that means
[19:12:44] peterbennett: Maybe that is only for the command line tool or maybe it means that the normal ffmpeg decode calls do not work and there are other calls for mediacodec
[19:13:35] peterbennett: gigem: So how do you want to do this?
[19:25:32] gregl (gregl!~greg@cpe-24-194-253-7.nycap.res.rr.com) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[19:26:17] markspieth22: gigem: did you apply both patches? mythplugins needs one too too handle alternate install root and a couple of other tweeks.
[19:28:09] markspieth22: need to get back to the gl green line fixes. green line means 00 data and gl is overrunning the data.
[19:51:25] gigem: markspieth22: No, I didn't notice there was a second patch. I will get and try that very soon.
[19:51:37] gigem: peterbennett: That's a good question on internal vs. standalone. The table is labeled "API Implementation Status" so I suspect it's intended to apply to the API and not just the command line tools. However, that wiki page has only seen minimal updates in the last 3 months. The code in master clearly has mediacodec under hwaccel support so I think it's just out of date information. I'm building up a new
[19:51:39] gigem: list of questions for the ffmpeg developers and will include clarification on this.
[19:51:47] gigem: As for hwo to proceed, I already know, or will soon know, eough to do some basic infrastucture. That includes setting up the display profiles and creating stub decoder and display classes. After that, I'm not sure. I could take a stab at resyncing to ffmpeg master, but don't know how far I'd get with that before you free up.
[19:55:46] peterbennett: gigem: I am a bit concerned about syncing to master on ffmpeg. How stable is it?
[19:56:19] gigem: I don't know. That's another question for the ffmpeg guys.
[19:58:13] peterbennett: Before resyncing , or when next resyncing, I want to decouple the mythtv configure from ffmpeg.
[19:58:56] peterbennett: The way it is now, ffmpeg configure gets merged into mythtv configure and that is a big nightmarish task.
[19:59:23] peterbennett: I don't see why the mythtv configure cannot just call the ffmgep configure
[20:00:34] gigem: I know and I totally agree. That's what I was going to propose. Pass the appropriate configure options to ffmped's configure and then, if it succeeds, proceed with configuring mythtv.
[20:03:12] peterbennett: That will cut down the merge work considerably
[20:40:17] enyc: more to the pointo is including ffmpeg in mythtv still neded, could it just build againsh ffmpeg 4 ?

[22:20:39] gigem: enyc: Others can probably answer this much better than me, but no, we cannot simply build against plain ffmpeg. We have a number of patches that we apply ourselves. I think the main ones deal with how we handle streaming from the backend and are pretty critical. The others deal with less critical things like handling additional types of closed captioning.
