[16:04:29] stuarta: there's plenty of options
[16:04:57] stuarta: including bouncers that let you disconnect from it and reconnect afterwards to catchup
[16:05:16] stuarta: personally, i go for screen + irssi
[16:05:54] peterbennett: I have not used weechat or screen. screen looks useful in that it lets you disconnect an ssh session and let it keep running.
[16:07:38] stuarta: yep, tmux is a newer alternative that does the same thing
[16:08:11] stuarta: fyi weechat & irssi = irc clients, screen & tmux allow you to disconnect from running sessions
[16:08:34] stuarta: the latter being quite useful when doing something like a build on an rpi
[16:09:30] peterbennett: so which is better tmux or screen, weechat or irssi
[16:09:32] peterbennett: ?
[16:09:43] stuarta: personal preference
[16:10:02] stuarta: i use screen, because when i started using it, tmux didn't exist
[16:10:29] stuarta: i use screen, because the last time i looked around for a decent text based irc client, i found irssi and it didn't suck
[16:10:38] stuarta: s/screen/irssi
[16:12:31] peterbennett: screen also has a feature to allow multiple connections to one shell, so you can see your IRC in two places at once
[16:13:25] stuarta: yes, i've used that before as well
[16:13:39] stuarta: screen sharing for text consoles :)
[16:17:07] peterbennett: weechat has an android plugin – not sure how it works ..
[16:21:12] gigem: peterbennett: I'm in a similar boat as stuarta. I use screen because it's what I grew up with. I didn't know about the session sharing. I'll definitely need to check that out. As for IRC clients, weechat appeared to have a less steep learning curve. It also has one feature that I really liked over the others that I checked at the time. The text input line can be configured to grow vertically as needed
[16:21:14] gigem: and then shrink back down to one line when done. All of the other clients required the input area size to be fixed at 1, 2, 4 or whatever number of lines.
[16:21:19] peterbennett: I wonder why debian packages such an old version of weechat – 1.6
[16:21:55] gigem: I have 1.9 in my Debian testing.
[16:22:26] peterbennett: this is stretch
[16:23:34] peterbennett: so you run screen, then run weechat under it, then disconnect screen – then later ssh in and reconnect screen – is that the approach?
[16:23:35] gigem: There are ways you can configure apt to let you pull in packages from a newer distribution (aka testing and sid/unstable) without pulling in everything else.
[16:23:52] stuarta: peterbennett: that is the exact approach
[16:24:27] stuarta: and you also set an away message "/away i'm not here, back tomorrow" and cancel it when you return "/away"
[16:24:48] gigem: Yes, that's what I do. I also use screen all the time at work. Almost all of my work is done on other systems that I ssh to with sveral screen sessions going on.
[16:24:50] stuarta: the irc client should capture any messages sent directly to you whilst you are away
[16:25:10] peterbennett: gigem: actually it is Raspbian stretch – I suspect they do not have unstable and test versions.
[16:25:24] stuarta: it'll be sufficient
[16:25:29] clever_ is now known as clever

[16:26:46] peterbennett: Other chat clients I have used seem to be fine with multiple connections but IRC does not like it.
[16:27:00] hampton: Sweet. Jonatan Lindblad two commits on Tuesday fix my backend resource exhaustion / crash (and load of 632) problem. I should have complained a year ago. :-)
[16:27:38] gigem: peterbennett: I don't know much about Raspbian. It appears that Debian proper does have testing and unstable for arm, though.
[16:27:56] hampton: Now I just need to backport them to 29 and 0.28.
[16:29:47] stuarta: hampton: shouldn't be too difficult
[16:30:10] stuarta: normally a `git cherry-pick -x ##` is sufficient
[16:30:44] hampton: Yep. I think the first one fixes my problem, but both seem like they should be backported.

[16:38:39] hampton: stuarta: word of warning... I've lost the ability to bring up console windows on my remote kvm server. I think it happened when I upgraded to F27. Seems to be a general X over ssh problem, but biased towards gnome. For example, 'ssh remote xterm' works but 'ssh remote gnome-terminal' hangs. Not sure why it affects virt-manager, but it does.
[16:39:31] stuarta: odd, i haven't upgraded my boxes to f27 yet, my collegue at work has, and he says it's fine
[16:39:49] stuarta: i'm just going to wait until my new laptop arrives and go straight to f27 on it
[16:39:56] hampton: Virt manager does do X over ssh, but not sure why it fails into the failing camp.
[16:39:59] stuarta: then i'll have f25, f26 and f27 laptops
[16:40:00] hampton: interesting.
[16:41:28] stuarta: peterbennett: i am intruiged by what access to the display Qt gives us, and why some of our code feels the need to make additional connections back to X
[16:42:01] stuarta: also curious about things like utilizing vdpau / vaapi via ffmpeg, rather than directly, but i'm guessing that's another can of worms
[16:42:01] hampton: I had another problem with the upgrade with /var/lib/gdb being labeled wrong and selinux preventing X from starting, but other than that the upgrade went pretty well. I didn't have the gdm problem when I upgraded my laptop last month. I don't have any way to test the kvm problem there.

[19:59:18] gigem: peterbennett: Do you what impact your changes will have on adding native, Android, decoding support? I'm about to finish my current changes and then want to try markspieth's Android port and eventually get hardware/MediaCode decoding working.
[20:02:44] peterbennett: gigem: How is teh native android support implemented (Private decoder or ffmpeg) ?
[20:03:06] peterbennett: s/teh/the
[20:05:48] peterbennett: gigem: How do I see the results of commands in weechat, for example if I type /whois gigem I do not see any response
[20:06:39] peterbennett: i think I have to add a screen area for a buffer of server messages or something like that
[20:07:18] gigem: I have no idea. Mark's port uses ffmpeg/software decoding and opengl rendering. Kodi can use ffmpeg and mediacodec. My hope is there is a way to access mediacode via ffmpeg.
[20:07:39] gigem: peterbennett: Do you have a "server" window? Try it there.
[20:08:01] peterbennett: Where do I find the server window?
[20:08:52] gigem: I use alt-left and alt-right to rotate between the channels I'm connected to. #1 is always the server/freenode one.

[20:09:35] peterbennett: gigem: Ok thanks that works
[20:09:46] gigem: yw
[20:10:45] peterbennett: So the other question.. I would think for android software decoding would be too slow
[20:11:40] peterbennett: The Raspberry Pi, Crystal HD, and a few otehrs have private decoders for hardware decoding
[20:12:04] peterbennett: The changes there were minimal
[20:12:57] peterbennett: I suggest Mark should pull in my changes and see what happens

[21:11:52] stuarta: :)
[21:12:24] ** stuarta insults his dev laptop **
[21:12:39] stuarta: why oh why is one of the VM's spinning and chewing cpu time?
[21:18:16] stuarta: seems like it had locked up. weird
[21:18:31] stuarta: if this keeps happening i'm going to have to start debugging qemu, and that's not fun
[21:22:25] stuarta: see it a bit recently, you shutdown the offending vm, and the issue moves to another. it's completely odd
[21:22:36] markspieth: gigem: peterbennett: the native android port does everything the same way. I have a few days free before we go away but dont have much time off this xmas. I will see how I go updating with the latest updates.
[21:24:03] markspieth: Anyway getting it to display video again is more important than hardware decoding and most of the tv boxes these days are pretty grunty.
[21:31:35] peterbennett: markspieth: Does it use ffmpeg deprecated things? If you use AVStream::codec it may be incompatible with my changes.
[21:32:12] markspieth: it uses whatever MFE uses. there are no differences except some minor mods for opengl display which no longer do the right thing
[21:32:29] markspieth: theme displays but video not ATM
[21:32:51] markspieth: audio is good
[21:33:13] peterbennett: markspieth: That should be fine then, there were no changes to display stuff, only to decoding
[21:33:19] markspieth: if android supports any ffmpeg accel then it would use that too.
[21:33:34] markspieth: I think
[21:33:36] markspieth: :-)
[21:34:22] markspieth: The best fix is a native android surface videooutput which I have started
[21:35:37] peterbennett: How do you build and install on Android? My phones and tablets are protected so I cannot do much that the manufacturer does not wnat me to do.
[21:36:33] markspieth: I do a cross build under linux. The scripts are there in packaging android. makelibs to get dep libs and build them and then mythbuild to make myth proper
[21:37:06] markspieth: cros build for arm and arm64
[21:37:47] peterbennett: I never figure how to cross build. How do the qmake and so on work when you do that?
[21:38:30] markspieth: they work fine. bigger problem was qtwebkit for arm64 but I figured out some patches from later versions.
[21:39:00] markspieth: can get qt for android but they dont distribute webket with it so you have to build it yourself
[21:39:26] peterbennett: So you just run the regular Linux qmake and have a cross-compile gcc in there somewhere ?
[21:39:43] markspieth: The committed scripts are a bit out of date but I can push them at any time.
[21:39:56] markspieth: no the qmake you use is from qt for android
[21:40:12] markspieth: has a special env
[21:40:51] peterbennett: Yes that is what worried me – first you will need to build qt for android on a Linux machine
[21:41:44] peterbennett: But when you build qt for android it will make qmake for android which will not run on Linux PC
[21:43:13] markspieth: building qt is easy. the script does it for you.
[21:44:01] markspieth: just like any cross building env there are host tools built too. qmake is one such. gcc is another with comes from android NDK.
[21:44:22] markspieth: then it uses the host tools to build the libs/exes fior the target
[21:44:27] markspieth: do it all the time
[21:45:01] gigem: markspieth: If you can, please commit any build notes, etc. and put your code somewhere I can get to it. I expect to be able to start working on it right after Christmas.
[21:45:04] markspieth: gotta go to work. need to look at weechat
[21:45:25] markspieth: ok will do probably tomorrow into master
