[11:57:59] gbee: congrats on 0.28.1
[11:58:20] gbee: sorry I wasn't available to fix the things I'd wanted to
[11:59:19] stuarta: np, we all get busy
[12:01:57] gbee: mythfrontend is broken on HiDPI in Plasma – system reports the screen resolution to applications incorrectly (their kludgy hidpi fix for apps), instead of using the window size we scale the video is the reported screen size and it only fills 1/4 of the screen
[12:03:17] stuarta: hmmm, my 4k tv is okay, so is it in the reporting from the tv?
[12:20:36] gbee: are you using a high DPI mode in the window manager?
[12:21:43] gbee: this is on a desktop with a 4k screen, where KDE Plasma is configured to scale the UI 2x (aka High DPI)
[12:23:59] SteveGoodey: stuarta: 4k TV nice. Do you mind me asking what one you got?
[12:26:22] SteveGoodey: I was reading somewhere that makers no longer doing 3d ones.
[12:34:03] gbee: 3D is dead
[12:47:55] stuarta: SteveGoodey: i wish i could remember, it's a samsung smart tv of some kind
[12:48:45] stuarta: gbee: no i don't believe i'm using highdpi mode, the default terminal font is unreadable, so i have to increase it vastly if i want to use a terminal
[12:49:18] stuarta: like the terminal is about 1/16th of the size of the screen (or possibly smaller)
[12:49:18] SteveGoodey: stuarta: Did you want one with HDR?
[12:49:28] stuarta: HDR?
[12:50:49] SteveGoodey: High Dynamic Range. Seems to be the latest must have???
[12:51:12] stuarta: i have had mine for a while now, am quite happy with it
[12:52:27] SteveGoodey: I see there's quite a range of 4k blu-ray titles in hmv.
[13:06:10] gbee: I have a mid-range Panasonic 4k TV with HDR ... not the best money can buy, but it was a reasonable upgrade over my old tv
[13:07:30] gbee: HDR content is limited, except for some test files you can download and some limited content on Netflix. It was initially impressive, but like all these things with nothing to directly compare it to, you quickly stop noticing any difference
[13:09:21] gbee: some bits of the recent BBC iplayer 4k HDR trial were nice, I think that like HD, where it will really shine for me is BBC Nature documentaries
[13:10:36] gbee: not forked out for a 4K blu-ray player yet, think the prices have to come down a bit further before it's a justifiable expenditure
[13:11:18] gbee: when I last checked there were only two manufacturers of players and 3–4 models in total
[13:15:20] gbee: I'm using a raspberry pi frontend now, which is only capable of 1080p so everything has to be scaled up (not a big deal since there's no broadcast 4k yet)
[13:21:47] enyc: will there be DVB-T2 4k codec over the air ?
[13:22:10] gbee: not anytime soon in the UK I don't suppose
[13:22:29] gbee: not until they get rid of all the shopping channels and other junk to make room
[13:22:37] SteveGoodey: Another confusion is oled which is mentioned as giving similair black levels to plasma.
[13:23:02] gbee: the government is too busy selling off all the bandwidth to mobile phone companies
[13:23:23] enyc: =)
[13:23:41] SteveGoodey: Another blinking retune sometime.
[13:24:26] gbee: bandwith that belonged to analogue TV and that could have been used for more HD and 4k channels ... but that wouldn't have put billions into government coffers
[13:25:10] gbee: SteveGoodey: better blacks but worse brightness I believe
[13:25:53] enyc: 'age old problem, who will actually be able to see this well ;p
[13:26:14] gbee: i.e. you can do HDR with OLED, but the whole contrast range shifts to the black, deeper blacks less bright whites
[13:26:46] SteveGoodey: Was there talk of 4k over satellite for uk?
[13:26:55] gbee: enyc: it is actually appreciable, but mostly only in comparison to non-HDR content
[13:27:08] gbee: SteveGoodey: Astra did trials last year, so maybe
[13:27:36] gbee: however Sky is moving away from Satellite to IPTV/Streaming
[13:28:21] gbee: the whole streaming/IPTV shift sucks ... no more skipping adverts

[13:46:53] ShapeShifter499 (ShapeShifter499!~ShapeShif@unaffiliated/shapeshifter499) has joined #mythtv
[13:50:29] gbee: for now, but once they have a delivery platform in place, why continue to pay millions for satellite space when they can offer more content for less over IPTV?
[13:53:53] jheizer (jheizer!~jheizer@2601:246:8200:70ab:dd3e:5c23:33e:d00a) has joined #mythtv
[13:58:34] stuarta: that's part of the problem see, they huge bandwidth on satellite which even now they will struggle to come close to over iptv
[13:58:39] stuarta: +have
[13:59:25] stuarta: it'll be quite a while before the bandwidth over iptv is available, and the equipment needed to scale out to *everyone* is non trivial
[13:59:41] stuarta: unless they actually bother to use multicast ip properly, then there's a chance it'll work
[14:47:01] stuarta: QtWayland looks to be an interesting beast
[14:47:41] stuarta: almost need to write a complete new frontend with tho, by the looks of it
[14:48:02] stuarta: http://blog.qt.io/blog/2016/06/13/new-compositor-api-qtwayland/
[14:48:10] stuarta: https://wiki.qt.io/QtWayland

[16:02:40] ** stuarta insults his internal network **
[16:44:14] stuarta: hah, insulting over, now it works how i want
[16:45:17] stuarta: for those having fun with simple ipv6, i now have ipv6 routing between vm's on different machines in the house, all managed by ospf :)
[16:46:28] enyc: oh ;p
[16:46:29] enyc: fun
[16:51:54] stuarta: simples!
[16:55:08] stuarta: woot. i have a frontend, running on ubuntu 17.04, in a VM, and both sound and video work
[16:55:15] stuarta: HD doesn't work very well tho.
[16:55:22] stuarta: SD seems to work
[16:55:26] stuarta: good for testing
[16:58:21] ** stuarta adds a few cpu's to see if that helps playback **
[17:05:28] jheizer: I've never done any of that
[17:05:37] ** jheizer notes he is in the wrong channel **
[17:05:52] jheizer: Curious though, what VM host?
[17:06:14] stuarta: fedora 25
[17:06:37] jheizer: Like KVM/libvirt?
[17:06:55] stuarta: yes kvm/libvirt spice (qxl) graphics
[17:07:03] jheizer: cool
[17:07:24] jheizer: ipv6 talk again reminds me of something too
[17:08:16] jheizer: peterbennett, not sure if you read logs but a thing to note with comcast ipv6. Every once ina while my WAN ipv6 address will go away, but the clients will still have their address. So any outgoing traffic gets killed. Can be confusing.
[17:08:50] jheizer: Not sure if it is a pfsense bug or the address expiring or what, but something to check if you suddenly seem to have partial internet access.
[17:09:13] enyc: jheizer: hrrm when i've had a pppoa link i've not needed a wan ipv6 address at all
[17:09:23] enyc: jheizer: it just needs to be using the link as a defaultroute for ipv6
[17:10:30] jheizer: again above my ipv6 knowledge other than when it happened it drove me made for a day straight.
[17:11:10] enyc: jheizer: can't say i've used pfsense though, i have individually managed host and not rely on heavy wan firewall
[17:11:15] jheizer: All I know is I go into the WAN config page, hit save, it refreshes and has an ipv6 address again and everyone is happy. Happens once every 6 months or a year.
[17:11:24] stuarta: yeah, you only need a LL address in order to route the subnet, but it's a nice to have
[17:11:39] enyc: i'm not using ethernet-WAN, though...
[17:22:02] stuarta: so my fun for this evening is attempting to merge the table handling rework
[17:24:44] stuarta: well to continue on that project, started the other day, and it's slow going

[20:16:34] peterbennett: jheizer: Thanks for the info. Actually I am not sure how much use to make of IPV6. If the world would get on board with it that would be great, but for my personal network, IPV4 is fine I will not be exceeding 256 devices at home any time soon.
[20:19:28] jheizer: I quoted a number the other day on here, but I think it was 40% of my public traffic is ipv6 now maybe.
[20:19:42] jheizer: and yeah, I don't use it internally at all.
[20:21:03] peterbennett: jheizer: how do you tell how much traffic is IPV6?
[20:21:42] jheizer: On my firewall box I can see how much traffic flows over each route defined.
[20:23:11] peterbennett: jheizer: One thing that maybe nice about it is to be able to access my home network devices when I am away, but I suppose hotels may not have ipv6 so I would be stuck.
[20:24:08] peterbennett: I am not sure what to do about firewall, it seems dangerous being open to all.
