[11:01:03] stuartm: no, there is no multicast streaming support ... very limited number of scenarios where that would actually be viable
[11:01:46] stuartm: if it's a single client, multicast wouldn't make much sense, and with multiple clients which if any would get to control playback? Pause/Skip/Rewind etc?
[11:02:46] clever: my ISP's IPTV setup only uses multicast for the livetv, the instant you go off-live, the master records multicast, and then unicasts it to the slave
[11:04:07] stuartm: I mean it would be technically feasible to implement, with a 'master' client and slave clients infrastructure but no-one has really proposed that before. Use cases would include classroom playback where each student has their own screen, but there are other, off the shelf solutions for that
[11:05:02] stuartm: multicast makes sense for livetv ... to a point
[11:06:05] clever: in my case, the mutli-cast can cross a router, and there is 1 group per channel
[11:06:19] clever: so watching a channel is as simple as joining a multicast group

[12:50:54] dblain: clever, stuartm: One use case is if you are working around the house and want to have the same show on all tvs. I would expect that all clients would have control over the stream in this case. I use a HDBase-T matrix switch which allows me to have that feature using a single client. (plus all my devices are in the basement in a rack)
[13:14:34] stuartm: well having the 'master' float as required is definitely a useful feature, what I'm envisaging is the scenario where two frontends near simultaneously request seeks etc. You really need it architected so that only one frontend is 'master' at a time, but that can be as simple as saying that Client A takes and holds master status for a minimum of 5–10 seconds, a subsequent command from Client B after that timeout will
[13:14:36] stuartm: transfer control to B etc
[13:17:43] stuarta: definitely one of those things that somebody who desires it would need to write
