[00:00:28] dekarl: there is the language barrier with the users usually hanging out at some "tv in country X" or "<geopolitical entity> <mythtv competitor>" forums :)
[00:01:11] dekarl: and then there is the programming language barrier with everything that is not written in Perl being spread all over the internet
[00:02:07] dekarl: some years ago I was wondering if we should collect all the python grabbers, but my lack of python skill kept me from that
[00:02:22] gary_buhrmaster: dekarl: I recall (it has to be a year ago now) putting in ticket IRT some perl module starting to complain it was going to be removed, and I think it may have been ignored until (what is now) past the scheduled remove of the module.
[00:02:48] gary_buhrmaster: dekarl: I would have preferred to write my grabber in python, but it had to be perl.
[00:03:41] dekarl: gary_buhrmaster: many grabbers out in the wild are written in python. I have no idea how packaging and distribution works for them, though
[00:04:04] gary_buhrmaster: I am guessing poorly.
[00:05:19] gary_buhrmaster: I know this is not your issue, but I do not like email with (spam) ad's on the bottom. Is there a compelling reason that the email lists can not move off of sourceforge?
[00:05:57] dekarl: rmeden: -^
[00:06:18] dekarl: personally I'd love to see us move to github, but they don't do mailing lists
[00:08:11] gary_buhrmaster: github, gitlab, whatever. I know the new owners are claiming "this time" sourceforge will do the right thing. Burned too many times. I do not believe them.
[00:11:46] dekarl: just getting rid of CVS would be appreciated :)
[00:18:12] gary_buhrmaster: I hate CVS. No, that is not strong enough, I despise CVS (SVN is little better in my mind). I have been forced to use CVS, but I just encountered too many issues with larger teams.
[00:21:14] gary_buhrmaster: But I do understand that getting people to move from what they know (or too often, have a cheat sheet to follow), i.e. CVS to something they do not know (and has completely different approach), i.e. GIT can be challenging.
[00:23:46] gary_buhrmaster: I had to participate/lead multiple meetings to help our team learn git from cvs. And they were totally uncomfortable with git.

[00:26:03] gary_buhrmaster: (the physicists (international team) I suggested to start with git, on the other hand, surprised me by making a special effort after 6 months or so to come back and thank me for making their lives so much easier than their experience with cvs/svn.)

[05:26:02] rmeden: gary_buhrmaster: as you noted... re: SF if it aint broke.. I don't think a lot of folks are annoyed with the SF ad at the bottom. To be honest, I don't remember the last time I noticed it. There has talk about moving to GIT.. but no one has really taken the lead on it. The XMLTV SF project is really just a collection of independent stuff, and if it ain't broke and works well enough for the author, not much tends to happ
[05:27:29] rmeden: While GIT does have advantages, it really doesn't make much different to a project such as XMLTV. (personally, I prefer SVN over git.. at least for smaller project that don't benefit from many git features)
[05:28:12] gary_buhrmaster: rmeden: I get all the email via text. The ads are actually duplicated, and they are annoying. I understand SF is not a charity.
[05:28:38] rmeden: In my mind I try and treat XMLTV the file format, XMLTV the SF project, and XMLTV.ORG the web page as different entities.. if someone wanted a python project and adds it to xmltv.org wiki, hopefully folks would find it.
[05:28:50] gary_buhrmaster: rmeden: "your" project, "your" choice of vcs and provider.
[05:28:57] rmeden: via text messages? SMS?
[05:29:47] rmeden: gary_buhrmaster: I've always (well since Ed became inactive) considered myself the defacto leader... more like hurding cats :)
[05:29:54] gary_buhrmaster: rmeden: via my email client. I force everything to plain text, and that means the ad happens before and after some html header/footer. It probably looks like only one ad for many using different MUAs.
[05:30:08] rmeden: It's really a hobby by itself now.. I only really get one small report with the data... don't use it much.
[05:30:30] rmeden: I use Thunderbird... but don't force TEXT
[05:32:23] gary_buhrmaster: rmeden: it is the only open source project which I have subscribed to the email list which has ads (when I subscribe to a commercial things, I expect them to "up-sell" me). That is why it stands out.
[05:32:38] gary_buhrmaster: rmeden: Where "stand out" is not in a good way.
[05:33:00] rmeden: moving off SF mailing lists would be a pretty big impact to folks I suspect.
[05:33:38] rmeden: If SF allowed a payment to prevent the ads, we can probably get SD to pay for it.
[05:33:42] rmeden: (I don't think they do)
[05:36:16] gary_buhrmaster: rmeden: I don't think so either (but I have never researched it). In any case, I have no idea if SF will survive (they have not yet demonstrated they have a reason to), so the problem may solve itself (with lots of bad fallout).
[05:37:50] gary_buhrmaster: rmeden: Thanks for the update.
[05:37:52] rmeden: I have XMLTV prepared if they do.. I have backups of the repository. I don't have backups of the releases, but who cares... It may not be a bad idea to try and get backups of the mailing list, but bulk subscribing folks to a new one could be tough and frought with problems.
[05:38:38] rmeden: The most important thing I've done is transfer xmltv.org to SD... so if I get hit by a truck, leaders of OSS projects have the keys to that and someone can take over.
[05:38:40] gary_buhrmaster: rmeden: Oh, I don't expect it to collapse overnight (although they could), I expect a "google code" warning. Get off now, and get off quick.
[05:38:54] rmeden: If they have the money to do that.
[05:39:13] gary_buhrmaster: rmeden: They can drain the slashdot funds for a little bit.
[05:39:27] gary_buhrmaster: rmeden: But I agree the finances are opaque.
[05:40:42] rmeden: but if someone wants to be more active in XMLTV SF project, I won't object! I just want to keep app working.. progress is good, but older apps working is more important.
