[05:17:08] brieweb: I just went into my MythTV backend setup on this system that has been running for a while
[05:17:23] brieweb: and it is asking me to setup the default storage directory
[05:17:39] brieweb: which I believe is /var/lib/mythtv
[05:17:47] brieweb: I have everything under root
[05:17:58] brieweb: but, it says it can't write to this folder
[05:18:52] brieweb: if I look under this folder, it has a bunch of subfolders
[05:19:07] brieweb: I am wondering why it is complaining
[05:19:50] brieweb: or, how this information got unset
[05:20:14] brieweb: I just went in trying to add the second tuner on my hdhomerun
[05:20:38] brieweb: do I have to specify folders for LiteTV group, etc.?

[14:58:57] stuarta: enyc: interesting, was that an empty database?
[14:59:01] enyc: stuarta: correct
[14:59:20] enyc: stuarta: no /var/lib/mysql/mythconverg at all, restarted mysql, no /etc/mythtv either

[15:00:05] enyc: stuarta: it makes no difference to delete /home/mythtv etiher, but not tried deleting group mythtv
[15:00:47] enyc: in THIS case, this box *had* a mythfrontend *only*, removed all mythtv packages, installed mysql-server and the other dependencies, THEN did the dpkg -i as aboveto 'create' from scratch, then bang...
[15:01:08] stuarta: so i wonder if the post-inst in either libmyth or mythtv-common is setting up the db

[18:04:33] enyc: tgm4883: hrrm i'll need to create a virtual machine to check from scratch, as you suggested you thought i might not be able to ;p
[18:08:22] enyc: tgm4883: i realyl just installed that set of debs as above, with no database or /etc/mysql/ installed already...
[18:09:20] tgm4883: enyc: ok, but I installed a new 14.04.3 VM, enabled the PPA, and installed the new packages without issue
[18:10:02] tgm4883: enyc: I mean, I see where you are coming from that it is frustrating, but I can't reproduce the issue, and I can't find anyone else that can either
[18:10:28] enyc: tgm4883: did you install _any_ of the packages or _JUST_ "mythtv-backend-master" ?
[18:10:56] tgm4883: IIRC, I installed just mythtv-backend-master, which pulls in it's own dependencies
[18:11:03] enyc: kk
[18:11:08] tgm4883: the VM is at home, I can check my apt logs later
[18:11:44] enyc: would you be happy with me reproducing it on xubuntu or mint 17.3 Cinnamon (both 14.04 derived) ??
[18:11:56] tgm4883: that's fine with me
[18:12:15] tgm4883: enyc: make sure to do this on a clean, newly built VM
[18:12:17] enyc: i'll definitely try ''from scratch''  — as you rightly point out there may be SOMETHING about my ''removing'' it
[18:12:20] enyc: yes' exactly
[18:12:44] enyc: i definetly have 2, different, machines where i've had same issue eventually so....
[18:12:45] tgm4883: enyc: Is it possible that you've got your mysql database on some other machine?
[18:12:51] enyc: no
[18:13:02] enyc: partly, because /etc/mythtv removed
[18:13:20] enyc: partly, because it still happened on second machine moved where it CAN'T access the ''other'' machine database
[18:13:21] tgm4883: enyc: can you check /root/.mythtv/config.xml and /home/mythtv/.mythtv/config.xml
[18:13:24] tgm4883: see if those exist
[18:13:37] enyc: yes, i got rid of .mythtv too, but that (should) only affect frontend ??
[18:14:03] tgm4883: I'm not 100% sure that is true.
[18:14:21] enyc: I (thought) global package configuration stuff SHOULDN'T be trying to look in *user* home directories
[18:14:49] tgm4883: enyc: it's probably worth posting your /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log file after trying to install and getting the error
[18:15:10] enyc: it doesn't finish backend installation / dpkg configuration etc.
[18:15:20] enyc: but will look for that too ;p
[18:15:32] tgm4883: enyc: well the thing is, we shouldn't be doing anything with the database. I think that mythbackend creates that
[18:15:46] ** enyc going to use mint 17.3 cinnamon 64bit for VM, but it SHOULDN'T be any different to ubuntu for this problem **
[18:15:48] tgm4883: we stopped shipping our custom DB in a previous version I think
[18:15:52] enyc: tgm4883: sure
[18:16:00] enyc: tgm4883: whats' the story about changes to db creation in 0.28 ?
[18:16:40] tgm4883: enyc: when I mentioned that, I thought we were still shipping our custom database in 0.27, but I didn't see it in the packaging when I looked earlier
[18:16:47] tgm4883: so we might have removed that in 0.27 or 0.26
[18:17:48] enyc: thankyou
[18:17:54] ** enyc downloading image now =) **
[18:18:36] enyc: any (idea) that pre-existing 'mythtv' group could matter ?
[18:19:17] tgm4883: enyc: it shouldn't. However that is why I wanted you to check for those config.xml files.
[18:19:22] enyc: nods
[18:19:42] tgm4883: enyc: mythbackend starts as root then drops to mythtv in 0.27, so we should check both those user home directories
[18:19:47] enyc: i will creaty VM when its' downloaded/leady but i'm also testing what happnse WITHOUT any of those config fires on laptop
[18:19:58] enyc: indeed laoptop HAD a /root/.mythtv now removed .....
[18:20:26] tgm4883: enyc: another test you could do is to download the packages (via 'apt-get -d install mythtv-backend-master') then disconnect the network, then do the install
[18:20:40] enyc: yes laptop is now *offline*
[18:20:48] tgm4883: enyc: well I was hoping we could look in that file and see if it was pointed elsewhere
[18:21:06] enyc: /var/lib/mysql/ contains no mythconverg
[18:21:18] enyc: if it was pointed elsewhere, that server was not accessible when i tested anyway
[18:21:32] enyc: BUT retrying on debian jessie laptop offline =)
[18:21:35] tgm4883: enyc: what about if you log into mysql and do a 'show databases;'

[22:08:03] natanojl: dekarl: stuartm: The event that was changed to be conditionally sent in 019044db3 had a side effect in that the closed socket was deleted when the event was handled in MainServer::customEvent(QEvent*). Now, if the backend is idle and you use for example mythshutdown --status (which mythwelcome does), a large number of sockets (and threads) can linger since customEvent is never called. After an hour or so my backend had about 330 socket thread
[22:08:04] natanojl: s and at this point no new threads could be created. To fix this we could add another event, or periodically go through the closed sockets and delete them. Opinions?

[23:03:22] dekarl: should we remove mythwelcome, now that the frontend can idle without help

[23:19:07] natanojl: dekarl: It is the MythSocket itself that is calling MainServer::connectionClosed so I'm not sure how good that would be. Maybe using a ReferenceLocker could work
[23:27:03] natanojl: I'm not sure about mythwelcome. If mythfrontend could start in idle state that would be one more step on the way.
[23:27:10] natanojl: anyway, time for bed
