[10:41:31] ShapeShifter499: stuarta: I actually got audio working in a weird way
[10:41:54] stuarta: how many chickens did you need to sacrifice to make it work?
[10:42:07] ShapeShifter499: http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/mythtv this is what I would be running right now
[10:42:43] ShapeShifter499: stuarta: I just need to attempt to play it with a external program and then play it again with mythtv
[10:42:50] ShapeShifter499: not sure why though
[10:43:19] ShapeShifter499: I stumbled across it asking for help with the audio in the #alsa channel
[10:44:00] stuarta: ah right, you won't see it in those packages
[10:45:57] ShapeShifter499: hang on let me dig up that command I used
[10:48:08] ShapeShifter499: stuarta: arecord -fdat -Dplug:dsnoop:HVR950Q | aplay -Vstereo
[10:49:09] ShapeShifter499: if I run that, leave it going, then try to stream live tv to another device using a kodi frontend it works. The audio starts out with a half a second or so of pop noises then it plays fine and in-sync with the video
[10:49:26] stuarta: how very odd
[10:49:48] ShapeShifter499: stuarta: that command also magically starts playing audio locally on the laptop that has the backend
[10:50:03] stuarta: that i would expect
[10:50:06] ShapeShifter499: however no audio works if I stream alone or run that command alone
[10:50:31] ShapeShifter499: it's so odd
[10:53:32] ShapeShifter499: stuarta: I could probably make a video of it
[10:53:52] stuarta: clearly something isn't enabling it properly
[10:54:41] ShapeShifter499: stuarta: maybe it's the v4l driver since both programs are having issue getting audio alone? or maybe it's alsa?

[16:50:35] stuarta: jpabq: i'll add kill anything that requires use of liblame to encode to a recording
[16:51:34] dekarl: lame? meh, even our ffmpeg has a decent aac encoder now
[16:52:13] stuarta: yeah, i raised a ticket about it a while back, iirc correctly it's nvr that's using it to encode to mpeg2
[16:52:34] dekarl: hmm, so master is un-feature-frozen until Feb 1st?
[16:53:51] stuarta: yes
[16:54:03] stuarta: no point in feature freezing it until we do a beta

[17:30:33] stuarta: jheizer: yes you are, you are a buildslave hoster ;-)
[17:39:41] stuarta: bill6502: for reference any commit you make will be built by the build network to catch any build failures
[17:45:07] bill6502: stuarta: tnx. I'm off to look at https://code.mythtv.org/buildbot/waterfall
[17:48:13] stuarta: np.
[17:48:27] ** stuarta makes a note to reboot alcor in the morning, it's throwing memory errors again **
[17:49:25] dekarl: hmm, we could unbreak the windows builder and use an osx builder... any takers?
[17:50:29] stuarta: we would need to call for volunteers
[17:50:41] stuarta: with the relevant hardware and software
[17:50:52] stuarta: both would need work
[17:53:57] ** stuarta thinks about how to map the channel icon database to ruby on rails model **
[17:55:22] stuarta: for reference, it's not too difficult
[17:56:26] jheizer: haha yeah I have some build slaves and a web platform no one uses or will use come .28
[17:56:47] jheizer: at which point I'll have to get off my butt and help with that
[17:57:07] jheizer: I've still got my rpi ready to be added any time
[17:57:10] jheizer: as a builder
[17:57:16] stuarta: i'm currently rewriting services.mythtv.org in ruby on rails, just because i can
[17:58:12] stuarta: well, that and it would be nice to develop in something easily maintainable by anyone
[17:59:30] jheizer: somehow I've never touched ruby before
[17:59:54] stuarta: i have a lot of time for rails, once you get your head around a few things it's really quite nice
[18:00:01] stuarta: excellent docs too
[18:00:08] jheizer: I did play around on the node hype train for a while
[18:00:31] stuarta: pfft, that's the gui level stuff i'm not even going to look at initially
[18:00:38] stuarta: but it integrates well with that
[18:02:14] stuarta: site #1 – services, nice simple little rest endping
[18:02:14] ** MythLogBot http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/1 **
[18:02:14] jheizer: Hard after having so many years of .net all my brain does is going I could do this so much faster staying in my familiar world.
[18:02:26] stuarta: site #2 – smolt.mythtv.org, needs a complete rewrite
[18:02:26] ** MythLogBot http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/2 **
[18:02:44] jheizer: mess aroudn with node but with no real application there was no point and I eventually lose interest
[18:03:02] stuarta: that's the thing isn't it, you need to have something you want to implement
[18:03:51] jheizer: Or my idea is the lets be the nex social what ever and the next thing you know you planned so much you thing man this will be a lot of work and quit too. haha
[18:04:17] jheizer: cause let's be honest, I'm not going to make the next facetubeweet
[18:05:06] jheizer: I think back when I was doing the node stuff I wanted to help with a new channel service, but then I got sucked into 6 months of 12+ hours days
[18:05:15] jheizer: and haven't really moved back into fun programming since then
[18:05:45] stuarta: part of rewriting services, is to make it more accessible to people wanting to improve the interface
[18:06:14] stuarta: and the interface currently sucks badle
[18:06:17] stuarta: *badly
[18:06:25] stuarta: right, time to go talk to the family

[20:12:53] dekarl: stuarta, instead of "no tuner backends" we can always setup a sample IPTV tuner with a channel list / EPG from services.mythtv.org
[20:18:51] dekarl: jpabq: some tests are rawtype == "V4L2ENC", others rawtype == "V4L2enc". Is that on purpose? (I forgot where these magic strings are case-in-sentive and where not)

[20:26:44] stuarta: dekarl: only problem with a sample iptv tuner is the available free channel would constantly be changing
[20:27:10] jpabq: dekarl: BTW, thanks for reviewing the patch. I appreciate it.
[20:27:26] dekarl: Going through the changes to recordingprofile.cpp makes me wonder about all the untranslated labels.
[20:28:29] jpabq: dekarl: Yeah, I was wondering about that too. I was really trying to make this V4L2 recorder 'dynamic' where the driver reported the options supported. I didn't quite reach that goal. If the options are dynamic, how do we translate them?
[20:29:13] stuarta: jpabq: i had in mind supporting whatever tuners v4l2 supports and handling them based on their capabilities
[20:30:10] jpabq: Some V4L2 drivers support TS. Others PS. Others claim they can do either, but in reality cannot. I discovered that V4L2 drivers either don't bother to report all their options, or they lie.
[20:30:48] stuarta: what a pain
[20:32:06] jpabq: When I started working on that 'recorder' the goal was for multi-rec. The more I dug into the documentation, the more I /though/ I could make it all dynamic. That turned into a big rabbit-hole.
[20:32:37] stuarta: ah see i thought the idea was to throw out NVR and properly support devices via the v4l2 api
[20:33:35] jpabq: I have NO intention on adding NVR to this new V4L2 recorder. When we decide the new V4L2 recorder is solid, I intend to strip out the old mpegrecorder & NVR.
[20:33:36] dekarl: I was thinking about all the hardcoded strings for the configuration UI. e.g. "MPEG-2 Hardware Encoder" or "Variable Bitrate".
[20:34:31] jpabq: dekarl: Those strings are supposed to returned by the V4L2 driver as a 'menu' of options. However, the analog driver the HVR-2250 (for example) does not bother to return ANYTHING when asked for that menu.
[20:35:15] stuarta: jpabq: do we need to send a survey request out to the users list. ie. please run this command and let us know what it reports.
[20:35:25] dekarl: For dynamic strings we could setup something similar to themestrings.h
[20:35:33] jpabq: dekarl: You are welcome to make any changes you think are necessary to the code I committed. Alternately, feel free to request that I make changes.
[20:35:36] dekarl: not sure how useful that is, though
[20:35:55] jpabq: stuarta: that is a very interesting idea. I will do that.
[20:36:36] ** stuarta tries to remember the command **
[20:37:22] jpabq: v4l2-ctl -d /dev/video0 --all
[20:37:27] jpabq: or something like that.
[20:37:28] stuarta: that's the one ;-)
[20:37:53] stuarta: ShapeShifter499: what's your v4l2-ctl show for your devices?
[20:38:16] stuarta: jpabq: ShapeShifter499 has one of these devices that has non trivial requirements, but is quite common in userland
[20:38:17] jpabq: actually that does not return the menu, just the controls.
[20:38:28] stuarta: 292e iirc
[20:38:40] stuarta: what's the menu even for?
[20:39:25] jpabq: The menu is specifically designed to allow an application to be able to easily represent the options in a human readable format.
[20:39:32] dekarl: jpabq: I'm not sure what makes sense. Maybe something that translation maintainers of languages with different characters can add some insight there.
[20:40:43] jpabq: It may not matter, since we can't trust drivers to return usefull strings.
[20:41:21] jpabq: v4l2-ctl -d /dev/hdpvr0 -L
[20:41:41] jpabq: The '-L' option shows the menu as defined by the driver.
[20:46:07] jpabq: dekarl: where did you see rawtype == "V4L2enc" ?
[20:48:46] dekarl: libmythtv/cardutil.h:137, libmythtv/cardutil.h:186
[20:49:26] jpabq: Ah. I didn't look in headers. Thanks.
[20:59:24] bill6502: is the above ^^^ related to: https://code.mythtv.org/buildbot/builders/mas . . . e/logs/stdio (same thing happens on my 14.04 hosts, but not on my 15.10 one, the 4 new V4L2_CTRL_*s don't exist in /lib/modules/3.13.0-74-generic/build/include/uapi/linux/videodev2.h)
[21:01:44] jpabq: Hi bill6502. Thanks. I asked the V4L2 folks what to do about that, and they say that most apps ship with their own copy of the header file, instead of relying on the system. I will be making that change.
[21:02:58] dekarl: sounds like the openmax solution ;)
[21:03:06] stuarta: a simple #ifndef should do the trick
[21:03:33] jpabq: stuarta: unfortunately, some of the missing vars are in an enum instead of being a #define
[21:03:53] dekarl: that would not allow compiling again an older linuxtv tree but running against a newer one
[21:03:54] ** stuarta facepalms **
[21:06:32] jpabq: So where should 'our' copy of videodev2.h go? external/V4L2/videodev2.h ? The 'system' copy is in /usr/include/linux/videodev2.h
[21:07:47] jpabq: Or, just put in in lib/libmythtv where the files that use it are?
[21:07:58] urlgrey (urlgrey!~urlgrey@199-116-73-2.sfo1.office.zencoderdns.net) has joined #mythtv
[21:08:03] stuarta: that is what i would do in this case, it's not an entire library
[21:08:37] jpabq: Okay. That is the easiest since that way I don't have to mess with the include path.
[21:09:57] dekarl: Does it need updates every now and then? maybe we can have a external/kitchensink for single files
[21:10:36] jpabq: If we ever needed new features, then we would need to update it. I have a feeling that would be very rare, though.
[21:10:46] stuarta: i concur
[21:11:44] stuarta: dekarl: if we do that, we couldn't integrate this ;-) https://github.com/puppetlabs/clj-kitchensink
[21:12:08] dekarl: ahh, but this has a prefix, lets keep it
[21:12:37] stuarta: :-p
[21:12:41] dekarl: btw, is there a services-ng repo or something for the curious to peek at?
[21:13:14] stuarta: hardly, it's currently 1 controller which implements the sample/videos
[21:13:17] stuarta: path
[21:13:47] stuarta: samples/video even
[21:16:53] stuarta: dekarl: http://paste.fedoraproject.org/312568/45323819/
[21:17:01] stuarta: that's it so far ;-P
[21:18:14] dekarl: so small and already has business value ;)
[21:19:28] stuarta: it's the equivalent of this bit http://paste.fedoraproject.org/312571/23835414/
[21:20:38] stuarta: note the militant coding in the last one....
[21:22:48] dekarl: hmm, I can buy that domain :(
[21:24:56] stuarta: yeah, torc seems to have died

[21:28:20] stuarta: jpabq: every commit triggers them
[21:28:57] jpabq: Good. I just wanted to make sure. I had this vague memory that they didn't get auto-triggered after a failed compile.
[21:29:44] stuarta: never heard of such a thing

[21:31:52] stuarta: yep, that's it
[21:32:13] jpabq: According to that, there are several bots saying they are failing to compile.
[21:32:15] jheizer: we're racing
[21:32:49] stuarta: freebsd and windows are expected, they've been failing for months
[21:33:04] jpabq: No Qt5.2 on FreeBSD?
[21:33:14] stuarta: wagnerp needs to install it
[21:34:24] dekarl: I vaguely remember asking him about that and its something with our configure not finding it
[21:35:04] stuarta: if that's so, it's clearly not a priority

[23:10:16] jpabq: stuarta: thanks. I am trying to decide if I need to maintain backwards compatibility with the ExternalRecorder API. Technically that 'recorder' was not added for 0.27. It would make my lift a lot easier if I assumed no one was using it...

[23:14:55] jpabq: Since the HDPVR 2 uses libusb and a bunch of code from Hauppauge, the easiest way to implement it is with an ExternalRecorder, but it needs to published a lot of the same 'capabilties' as the V4L2 stuff for the original HD PVR.
[23:16:25] stuarta: sounds like fun
