[15:54:11] stuarta: gigem: re the hdhr locking patch, in theory the logic to move to a different tuner should be able to be implemented using the code which checks if the tuner is available?
[15:55:01] stuarta: personally i see no reason *not* to be a good network citizen, and we should appropriately handle in use network based tuners
[15:55:13] stuarta: not that I have one to test

[16:15:08] gigem: stuarta: I don't disagree, but who's going to write the code? jpabq is our only recorder person at the moment and I don't know if he has an HDHR. The scheduler part, while probably not super difficult, is non-trivial and I'm busy with multiple input cleanup and eventual multirec without virtual tuners feature.
[16:16:22] stuarta: gigem: question then, when we trigger a recording, isn't there already a check to see if the tuner is in use?
[16:17:18] stuarta: i guess if we don't have any support for "it's busy" try another, then its complicated
[16:26:23] stuartm: I thought we did have limited failover, just not something that works 100% of the time for all devices and scenarios
[16:27:05] stuartm: jpabq: do you have an HDHR?
[16:27:18] stuarta: stuartm: i've been looking at some code, and i think we get as far as notifying a user on the frontend that a recording is starting
[16:27:27] stuarta: and do they want to allow it or cancel
[16:27:41] stuartm: jpabq: if not, I'll buy one when I'm over there for you to play with
[16:29:57] stuartm: stuarta: yes, we at least have support for checking whether we're the ones using the card, just less of that for checking whether it's unavailable for other reasons i.e. unreachable or unresponsive
[16:30:16] stuarta: we probably need that in the long run
[16:30:33] stuarta: especially as more and more network tuners become available
[16:32:01] stuarta: stuartm: while you are here, for a media wiki upgrade, do you normally use the patchsets or drop a whole new version?
[16:43:45] jpabq: I have a HDHR, but not a Prime.

[17:24:13] gigem: stuarta, stuartm: As you've already noted, we have some support for checking ahead to cancel recordings and to schedule around live Tv. What we don't have is any mechanism right now to check for external use and to temporarily mark a tuner unavailable.
[17:25:00] gigem: jpabq: I don't know if a Prime is necessary. Does the non-prime have the ability to allocate a tuner on the fly and mark it locked?
[17:26:06] jpabq: Good question. I have never used mine outside of myth so I don't know.
[17:26:35] jpabq: When was the last time jafa visited this channel?
[17:27:21] jpabq: It has been a while, but I have sent silicon dust emails in the past and never gotten a response. Might be able to post a question to their forum, though.
[17:47:02] jheizer: My guess would be it has something. I have an original dual HDHR and if you open 2 instances of their test viewing application it knows to skip the first and use the second tuner.
[17:47:21] jheizer: Whether that is a lock or just a check if it is use at all though I am not sure.

[22:29:24] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: Random thoughts from my (thought) experiment (no actual coding) from some time ago regarding HDHR locking.
[22:30:21] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: All the HDHRs have "old school" locking in the API, so any HDHR should work with locking
[22:31:26] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: The problem is (or at least could have been) is that the old school data transfer is via UDP, and there was nothing obvious for the HDHR to notice you stopped receiving, so if you died, or segfaulted (or network seperation) the tuner remained locked.
[22:32:43] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: The newer HTTP interface (only available on the HDHR3-CC (Prime) or HDHR4/HDTC models) support not only HTTP, but "dynamic" tuner selection, in that if you ask for a stream, the device will select one of the available tuners and then lock it and use it.
[22:33:10] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: As it is transmission based, if your app ended, or died, the device would drop the stream, and unlock the tuner.
[22:34:26] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: Unfortunately, without device "pooling" (which the HDHR view apps do), it would not try the next HDHR device (which is at the app level) looking for another available tuner.
[22:36:40] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: The other advantage (in theory) of the TCP stream was that it would retry for lost packets, which (might) deal better with some minimal packet losses that currently result in pixelation (obviously the HDHR devices have small buffers, so too much loss cannot be dealt with no matter).
[22:38:07] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: And, in addition, the new http stream allowed one to select transcode options dynamically for the transcode models rather than setting one and only one transcode by default.
[22:40:04] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: In my copious free time (which I am still looking to find) I was thinking about writing a new tuner type that would only support the newer HDHR devices, create some sort of device pooling, and use the http interface. Nothing more than the thought experiment happened.
[22:42:14] gary_buhrmaster: gigem: I am not sure if any of that brain dump is useful, and I certainly do not claim that I have all the details right, but there it is.
[22:44:37] gary_buhrmaster: btw, there is a new (4th gen) DVB-T2 tuner now available that might interest some in the UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/SiliconDust-HDHomeRun . . . /B00Y2JYZOC/
