[08:52:45] mr-test: hi
[08:53:19] mr-test: is anyone here running mythbackend+database on a ssd? what should one take care of when migrating to a ssd?
[08:56:08] pitz: what do you mean in particular?
[08:56:36] pitz: you should make sure you have noatime as one of your fs mount options
[08:56:52] pitz: if using ext4
[08:57:25] pitz: and discard
[08:58:25] pitz: other than that, im not aware of anything you need to worry about...
[09:01:34] mr-test: pitz: well, i read the mysql temporary tables can take several gbs of writes per day
[09:01:56] mr-test: and ssds have limited writes
[09:02:31] mr-test: "As I documented in my recent SSD thread, the writing that myth does to temp every time the scheduler runs (several times per hour) was writing over 30GB/day to the drive for me. At that rate, I was going to run through the rated usable life of the drive in 3 to 4 years (rated for 20GB/day for 5 years)."
[09:02:43] mr-test: from http://lists.mythtv.org/pipermail/mythtv-user . . . /327769.html
[09:03:23] pitz: well 30gb/day * 365 days is 7Tb/year.
[09:03:42] pitz: err 10Tb/year
[09:04:02] pitz: the Intel 330 SSD I use is good for 720Tb
[09:04:13] pitz: so 72 years of that... in other words, not to worry.
[09:04:28] pitz: i think the issue is somewhat overblown
[09:04:50] mr-test: other ssds have way less tb
[09:05:03] pitz: well lots have more...
[09:05:04] mr-test: i think a samsung evo has ~70tb
[09:05:14] pitz: okay 7 years, lol...
[09:05:20] pitz: try to get a MLC SSD
[09:05:24] pitz: instead of the TLC tech
[09:05:25] mr-test: hum yeah :)
[09:05:26] pitz: if you can.
[09:06:26] mr-test: 7 years is still not enough, i think my backend might run longer than that
[09:06:40] pitz: have you bought the SSD yet?
[09:07:32] mr-test: nope
[09:09:56] pitz: well... hmmm, well i think a few years ago ppl didn't have a good handle on SSD longevity and there was a brand of drives (OCZ) that just were poorly engineered
[09:10:06] pitz: that really set the reputation of SSDs back considerably
[09:10:28] mr-test: pitz: what do you think about a kingston hyperx fury? has 350gb tbw(though they might cheat on that a bit because that might only be reachable with compression)
[09:11:28] pitz: MLC + SF2281...
[09:11:42] mr-test: what's wrong about that?
[09:11:48] pitz: nothing...
[09:11:53] mr-test: ok :)
[09:11:58] pitz: i've been buying a lot of Crucial M500's
[09:12:05] pitz: cuz they're cheap
[09:12:21] mr-test: the kingston one is even cheaper than a crucial bx100 :)
[09:12:25] pitz: no issues to report on them...
[09:12:32] pitz: ah
[09:12:49] pitz: my mythtv machine has full storage redunancy
[09:12:57] mr-test: do you happen to know how much space the temporary mysql tables require when scheduling(with a few hundred channels)? because if it takes less than 2gb then i could simply put it in ram
[09:13:19] pitz: no idea, i only have a 4 channel setup here, lol
[09:19:09] pitz: actually we probably should move this convo to #mythtv-users. this channel is more for developers
[09:19:14] mr-test: ah alright, here he describes how to check how much data is written when rescheduling http://lists.mythtv.org/pipermail/mythtv-user . . . /325923.html

If you drive them close to full you will wear out the little working area left with your working set quickly. otoh you don't need a SSD, just keep the database/os and recordings on separate devices and optimize the DB e.g. run mysqltuner.pl and the first statement here https://github.com/MythTV/mythtv/commit/de66b . . . fde7072bb606
