[10:48:33] stuartm: dblain: Q_ENUM with the enum defined in a different class is working fine, but I'm trying to work out how to make RTTI work with Q_GADGET instead of Q_OBJECT, I've found people saying that reflection works with Q_GADGET but I can't actually seem to make it work – I've modified rtti so that it no longer has to cast to QObject to get the metatype object but I must still be missing something
[10:49:38] stuartm: if all else fails I can use Q_OBJECT on the enum wrapper, but I'd like to make Q_GADGET work if possible, just seems like the tidier solution

[16:41:34] stuartm: yeah, it's not looking promising, assuming we stick with the reflection based approach, there are other ways it might be done that don't involve that – it comes down to which requires the least clutter around the actual enum – wrapping it it a class is one thing – arguably a good thing from a namespace POV, but when I tried turning it into a QObject derived class it got ugly fast – e.g. I had to define copy constructors even though there's
[16:41:36] stuartm: nothing to be copied just to get it to build
[16:43:25] stuartm: the Q_ENUM works great with Q_GADGET, meaning we can keep the enums where they currently live, it's only the RTTI functionality that's causing me headaches
[16:45:55] stuartm: I thought moving to QT5 would solve the enum issue, but in reality it's only solved half the problem, there's been a couple of changes in 5.5 that might work for us, but I won't know until it's available and there's no chance of making 5.5 the default version for 0.28
[16:46:46] stuartm: changes such as https://qt.gitorious.org/qt/qtbase/commit/78e . . . fdedd599bba7
[17:06:05] stuartm: dblain: one idea that briefly crossed my mind was to automatically turn each enum into an object that gets returned with the request, so RecordingInfo would include the definition of the four different enums it uses – that has disadvantages, mainly size of response, but also benefits such as given all API users access to the translated description strings
[17:08:50] stuartm: it doesn't solve the issue of the XSD though

[17:27:28] dblain: stuartm: I always try to design it so the developer of the exposed services isn't impacted by the "Framework" requirements. But, if we don't mind doing a little extra work, there may be a solution. What if we have a function that adds a pointer of it's QMetaObject to a global container (map, hash, etc). [ QMap.insert( "<FQN of type>", &EnumTypeHere::staticMetaObject ); ]
[17:28:30] dblain: It means any non QObject enum would need to be added to that QMap/Hash/, which unfortunately is an extra step for the developer to remember.
[17:29:20] dblain: But we can then add helper functions to lookup a specific enum's type data if it's defined in a non QObject class. (similar to how QMetaType works).

[17:49:01] stuartm: dblain: do we want the json api to return the name of the enumerator instead of it's integer value? The name is more transparent than an undocumented integer value, we return the name for xml (with Q_ENUM) but the integer for json, if it was a question of internal IPC obviously the integer value is better but that's not the case currently
[18:30:45] dblain: stuartm: Name make sense to me.
[19:27:01] stuartm: well pushed the intial enum change, hoping it doesn't kill the QT4 build
[19:29:00] stuartm: but if it does ... well we've just made the switch to QT5 a few days earlier than I planned
[19:35:52] dblain: stuartm: Do these changes break the compatibility with the Services API (I would expect so)?
[19:37:58] stuartm: dblain: yes, at least for xml, though I've not bumped the version numbers yet because there are other enums to port over the next few days and I want to avoid the version number changing so many times in such a short space of time
[19:38:40] stuartm: I've not made the json serializer change yet
[19:39:15] dblain: makes sense. (Haven't seen the commit msg yet. E-mail being slow). Figured I'd at least state it here for anyone thinking of using master.

[21:17:46] peper03: Does it make sense to add 'Black and white' to VideoProps? Some programmes are marked as such in the UK EIT. Should be fairly trivial to parse it in fixups.
[21:25:05] peper03: ProgramInfo::properties looks broken already. It's a uint16_t but stores audio, video and subtitle properties combined. Those three property bitfields total 17 bits stored in a 16-bit variable...
[21:27:56] peper03: Admittedly this is the first time I've looked at this code, but what's the advantage of packing those three sets of properties into a single variable?
[21:29:45] peper03: Every time 'properties' is set, it's set by shifting and or-ing the three discrete sets, and every time it's read, it shifts and masks to get whichever set of bits is required.
[21:30:22] peper03: I don't see anything that is using the 'properties' variable as-is as a single value.
[21:30:38] peper03: Just lots of seemingly pointless shifting and masking.
[21:36:46] ** stuarta does some tweaks to 0.27 configure so it picks qt4 by default if both qt4 and qt5 are availabl **
[21:38:04] stuartm: peper03: it was condensed down to a single int as part of work by Daniel to condense the serialised ProgramInfo – hundreds of serialised copies get sent over the wire, when browsing the guide so packing it down improves speed
[21:38:07] ** stuarta upgrades crap dev box to f21 for fun **

[21:39:02] stuartm: stuarta: not here it doesn't, I have to explicitly override it with --qmake=
[21:39:19] stuarta: i need to add an enhancement to master for deb based systems whose qt4 and qt5 coexist with qmake-qt5 stuck in a funny path
[21:39:28] stuarta: stuartm: what do you need to add for qmake?
[21:39:59] stuartm: /usr/lib64/qt5/bin/qmake

[21:40:44] stuarta: at the moment it only looks for qmake-qt5
[21:40:48] stuarta: then qmake
[21:40:55] stuarta: so i'll add yours as well as mine
[21:41:25] stuartm: /usr/bin/qmake -> /etc/alternatives/qmake -> /usr/lib64/qt4/bin/qmake
[21:42:30] stuartm: I believe I'm supposed to edit that middle symlink, or edit a config and run a tool to do the same thing, not quite sure tbh
[21:42:58] stuarta: update-alternatives, or for deb based there's a qt5-default package
[21:43:04] peper03: stuartm: From what I can see, the serializer code (ToStringList) unpacks the single variable back into three items: https://github.com/MythTV/mythtv/blob/master/ . . . fo.cpp#L1355
[21:43:06] stuartm: and I don't really want to make the qt5 qmake the default since that would likely break building of some thing stuff like kdeconnect
[21:43:21] stuarta: easy enough to add some path hunting
[21:44:00] stuartm: peper03: hmm, maybe it was reducing the memory footprint then, but I agree it's sub-optimal and we should rethink it
[21:44:24] peper03: Particularly since we're already trying to store 17 bits in 16. It's already broken.
[21:44:41] stuarta: peper03: uint16 -> uint32 ??
