[13:52:38] stuartm: well websocket server survived fuzz testing by the most widely used websocket fuzz testing software without causing any backend crashes, memory leaks or other issues
[13:55:30] stuarta: \o/
[13:59:07] stuartm: need to analyse the results to see that all the scenarios were properly handled
[13:59:20] stuartm: 521 different tests, it could take a while
[13:59:27] stuarta: heh
[14:00:39] stuartm: it's reminded me of at least one element of the spec which we don't currently check for, and that's invalid utf-8 codes in text frames – spec says we should close the connection
[14:00:59] stuarta: interesting
[14:09:22] stuartm: the protocol is basic in the sense that there's no way to convey errors to the client other than with a 'close' message, there's no way that I can tell to recover from receiving incomplete frames – there isn't a start code or anything like that so you can't ignore data until the next frame arrives
[14:10:01] stuartm: so really the only solution to pretty much every error is to close the connection and let the client reconnect if it wants
[14:20:08] stuarta: basic = fast in this case
[14:22:03] stuartm: yeah, it's meant to be lightweight, not necessarily reliable without extensions
[14:28:35] stuartm: still need to merge it with the existing http server, but I might leave that until I've committed it to master, for now it's easier to keep it on a different port
[14:29:38] stuarta: how does it work from a browser perspective? do the just http connect, and then "upgrade" to websockets?
[14:32:38] jab416171: mythtv performs surprisingly well when it has direct access to a hard disk
[14:32:52] stuartm: yep, sends a standard http GET but some special headers, the server sends the correct HTTP response and then 'upgrades' the connection, all future traffic on that socket is treated as WebSocket protocol instead of HTTP
[14:36:58] stuartm: the initial handshake involves some unique token exchanges and hashing – I've no idea what purposes it serves other than to prove that the server really does understand the protocol, all seems a bit OTT but not particularly difficult to implement
[15:10:30] Seeker` (Seeker`!~cjo20@unaffiliated/seeker) has joined #mythtv

[16:35:03] stuartm: now there has to be a simple way to validate utf-8, don't really fancy writing my own method to check character by character
[16:35:20] stuarta: QChar ??
[16:39:33] stuartm: doesn't seem so, you can supply QChar with a byte but it doesn't seem to indicate whether it was successfully converted to a unicode character
[16:40:03] stuarta: well that sucks
[16:40:27] stuartm: there is a method using QTextCodec, best option I've seen so far, but not quite a one-liner

[22:23:56] stuartm: suspiro
[22:25:08] stuartm: gigem: do you think it's feasible to post events detailing schedule changes in a way that allows the UI to be updated only for the changes instead of being completely refreshed? Or does that seem like more effort than it's worth?

[23:22:12] dekarl: el gusto es mio
[23:22:30] dekarl: ^- with a little help from a friendly web service
[23:52:58] gigem: stuartm: It's on my TODO list. I have thought about it, but not recently. There are some things that could probably be done, but there are a lot of things that can change and checking them all can be a pain. I'm not sure if it would just be moving complexity around from one place to another.
[23:57:45] stuartm: gigem: I was thinking about it with what I'm working on at the moment, currently we have events detailing changes to individual recordings (file size, recording status, addition/removal) which means we can update the UI in both the frontend and webfrontend without refreshing the screen/page, but there's only a generic 'SCHEDULE_CHANGED' event when it comes to schedule changes
[23:59:28] stuartm: I will definitely be adding events for recording rule changes, but the schedule is much more complicated
