[00:38:50] jya: stuartm: regardless, that he isn’t distributing his modified copy is IMHO a great shame
[00:39:36] jya: well, 6:39 running under XCode Instruments , same memory footprint as when it started
[00:39:57] jya: I think the leaks are related to FFmpeg 2.2 and how they change the use of an AVFrame
[00:40:27] jya: before it was up to the decoder to allocate and relase memory, now the ownership of the buffer is by the AVFrame
[00:40:40] jya: going to test 0.27.1 though

[14:32:47] jya_: wagnerrp: should the BackendServerIP6 be null, shouldn’t the backend not listen on all IPv6 addresses?
[14:32:52] jya_: right now that’s what it does..
[14:33:24] jya_: in fact, no matter the IPv6 entered, it listen to all IPv6 addresses. yet only listen to private network if BackendServerIP is null
[14:33:31] jya_: that doesn’t make much sense
[14:34:32] wagnerrp: if BackendServerIP6 is undefined, it will choose on its own where to listen (which right now is everwhere available)
[14:35:00] wagnerrp: to not use IPv6, it either needs to be disabled during compilation, disabled in the OS, or set to ::1
[14:35:27] jya_: why was that choice made?
[14:35:43] jya_: sounds counter-intuitive when IPv4 doesn’t behave that way
[14:36:08] wagnerrp: IPv4 behaves the same way, only it restricts itself to private network addresses when choosing on its own
[14:36:14] jya_: why not disable IPv6 alltogether when BackendServerIP6 is not defined, seeing that no IPv6 connection will ever be made
[14:36:26] wagnerrp: it was designed more for use in the frontend
[14:36:41] wagnerrp: leave it blank for the frontend to listen anywhere, populate the field to restrict where it listens
[14:37:17] jya_: i see
[14:37:20] jya_: confusing
[14:37:58] jya_: problem is once you set it, you can’t reset it
[14:38:17] jya_: i had undo my changes allowing to disable IPv6 connections seeing that it was broken
[14:38:42] wagnerrp: you previously could... guess that's a consequence of that item becoming a dropdown instead of a text entry field
[14:38:49] jya_: maybe the easiest would be to change the mythtv-setup general settings.
[14:39:31] jya_: instead have in the upper section where you define IPv4 and IPv6 as the address to listen on, with an option to make it everywhere
[14:40:01] jya_: And you define the master backend underneath, which is where to connect to
[14:40:35] wagnerrp: all backends at current require at least one of the backend addresses be defined
[14:40:46] wagnerrp: since there's no proper autodetection in the protocol
[14:41:22] jya_: what is the BackendServerIP setting used for for secondary backend seeing that it’s only used to decide where to listen?
[14:41:38] jya_: from looking at frontend and backend that is
[14:41:44] wagnerrp: when you connect to a backend to stream, it's going to look up the hostname for the recording, and then look up the IP defined for that hostname
[14:41:56] wagnerrp: s/hostname/profile/
[14:42:34] jya_: hmmmm...
[14:43:06] wagnerrp: ideally, the master backend would store the IP addresses registered for each connected backend
[14:43:20] wagnerrp: and then clients would query the master backend for how to access them, rather than the database
[14:43:39] wagnerrp: so only the IP address of the master backend would have to be stored (or even configured)
[14:43:51] wagnerrp: and that could just as well be stored in the config.xml
[14:43:54] ** jya_ adding to my todo list **
[14:44:06] jya_: nah, I think we should get rid of the config.xml
[14:44:13] jya_: or more accuretely, it shouldn’t be required
[14:44:30] jya_: also the backend shoud advertise via upnp and bonjour the protocol they support
[14:44:46] jya_: so when you start mythfrontend with -p you only see the backend it can connect to
[14:45:00] wagnerrp: the backend does advertise via upnp, and the frontend will automatically detect it, connect to it, and generate a config.xml
[14:45:03] jya_: right now, you see all of them
[14:45:36] jya_: yeah, but you select a backend that is no good, and you get an error about not being able to connect or that the database schema isn’t right
[14:45:59] wagnerrp: right. it's a mechanism that needs to be more hashed out
[14:46:07] jya_: i didn’t say they weren’t advertising via upnp / zeroconf, but that they should advertise their version number
[14:46:21] jya_: via upnp/zeroconf
[14:46:58] wagnerrp: i'm pretty sure we include our ABI version in the advertisement
[14:46:59] jya_: ive modified the code following the comment of the user in the forum that he had set BackendServerIP to localhost
[14:47:18] jya_: so now, if it’s not an IP address, it will resolve the name
[14:47:21] wagnerrp: right... i have no idea how that user could have set that setting to localhost
[14:47:39] jya_: this has the side effect to allow to enter hostname in all the field. and they will be resolved accordingly
[14:47:53] wagnerrp: the trouble is that setting is used as a string match to decide what machine is the master backend
[14:47:57] jya_: prefering IPv6 over IPv4 when IPv6 is availalbe etc
[14:48:09] wagnerrp: so if the backendserverip is a hostname, the masterbackendip must similarly be a hostname
[14:48:37] jya_: sure… but seeing that I’ve made changes earlier so no setting is ever retrieved directly via the GetSetting
[14:48:59] jya_: so wherever you’ve used a hostname, it will be resolved and only IP will be used
[14:49:01] wagnerrp: i saw there was some handler in there to grab the port number
[14:49:22] jya_: so entering blah or 192.168.x.x is identical
[14:49:26] wagnerrp: technically, the connection code will automatically try to resolve a hostname if you use one to connect to a backend
[14:49:56] jya_: sure, but if you only did so, then you’re right, “the trouble is that setting is used as a string match to decide what machine is the master backend”
[14:49:59] wagnerrp: i don't recall off hand what traditionally was preventing that from being used for those values
[14:50:06] jya_: as i said, that’s not the case anymore..
[14:50:20] jya_: yes it does use string to compare, but those strings can ever be an ip address now
[14:50:32] jya_: there was no resolution for those
[14:50:52] jya_: it’s using QHostAddress everywhere, so if you pass a hostname, you get a null QHostAddress
[14:51:00] jya_: the code as it was, just couldn’t handle hostnames

[14:51:47] wagnerrp: there was always something preventing the use of hostnames. i just don't recall what
[14:51:57] jya_: i jsut said what :)
[14:52:10] jya_: connection to, would have worked
[14:52:15] jya_: listening on, wouldnt
[14:52:29] wagnerrp: yes, before the listening on changes, when we listened everywhere
[14:52:32] jya_: and then for a backend to detect if its the master
[14:52:39] wagnerrp: like 0.20-eera
[14:53:11] jya_: it sees what is its IP address, and compare that with what is stored in MasterBackendServerIP
[14:53:19] jya_: and that would have failed
[14:53:46] jya_: my changes, via the access method, make sure only IP addresses ever transit
[14:54:02] jya_: so that comparison between IP or hostname, so long as they point to the same IP is fine
[14:58:20] jya_: all this need to be rethought anyway… it’s a mess

[15:24:26] jya_: wagnerrp: when a slave backend records something. in the database for that particular recording, how is the recording matched to that slave… is it the ip address or the hostname?
[15:24:43] wagnerrp: database profile (hostname)
[15:25:16] jya_: ok
[15:35:14] gigem: jya_: Sure, though I did give that last commit nearly 5 days in master before I backported it. IME, I've had very little luck in attracting testers of individual patches. You seem to have had better luck with devel/027candidates, but I wonder how many wull continue to do that now that the biggest playback issues have been resolved. FWIW, I have a better fix for the last issue based on the later changes in
[15:35:16] gigem: master that I'm running myself on 0.27. The potential sticking point with it is is makes a protocol change, though it does it in a completely backward and forward compatible manner.
[15:36:26] jya_: gigem: it’s likely people still have devel/027candidates repo active… as soon as i change the version to be say 0.27.3candidates, it will install over mythbuntu packages
[15:36:30] jya_: and i’ll be testing them
[15:37:20] jya_: gigem: i add in 0.27.1 a change in the mythprotocol.. same thing backward/forward compatible.. don’t see the problem there
[15:37:40] jya_: having said that, i’m not sure what problems your change fixes, so it’s hard for me to test anything
[15:39:32] gigem: I don't either, but in the past, there has been resistance to protocol changes. Even API changes (which my change also has) require a version change. Scheme changes are pretty much never allowed.
[15:46:05] jya_: if you could explain quickly cases where your changes would change things, i can try it here… and have it on my main frontends if it’s in devel/027candidates
[15:55:33] gigem: It's a somewhat obscure case. Basically, if you manage to start two or more recordings on the same chanid/recstartts, the recorder will modify the recstartts of the 'later' recordings to make chanid/recstartts unique, but that change never makes it back to the scheduler. If you then try to stop on of the later recording from anywhere except playbackbox, it will actually stop the first recording. It also
[15:55:35] gigem: creates a minor display issue in playbackbox where the later recordings aren't shown as recording. The case is easiest to create by running live TV on the same channel as a scheduled recording or by creating a manual recording at the same time as another scheduled recording.

The other day I was copying a video to my laptop over wireless which saturated the network link, at which point my reasonably powerful laptop got extremely laggy navigating
