[08:37:08] peper03: jya: Is it a 'proper' still frame? If you call up the OSD, it should show 'Still frame' rather than a moving duration (or in the logs, you should see 'DVDNAV_STILL_FRAME' rather than 'DVDNAV_NAV_PACKET')
[08:38:28] peper03: I have that DVD too, so I can see if I can also reproduce it. Where was the still frame? In stuff before the main menu, I guess?

[10:54:23] peper03: jya_: Mine has obviously been mastered differently. Also, just for information, I don't think you can tell anymore from the OSD whether it's a real still frame or not. We fake it and read the timer to show progress.
[10:55:34] jya: peper03: when i say still frame, to me it just means a static image… here it's just text about some legal crap
[10:56:05] peper03: jya: If you have time to make a backtrace/logs, I'd be interested but I don't know whether I'll have much time in the next couple of weeks.
[10:56:07] jya: mine is the region 4 version, unlikely to be the same as yours. just the piracy == theft video at the beginning has a .au web site link to it
[10:57:06] peper03: jya: Yeah, still frames can be done in a couple of ways and for all intents and purposes look the same to the user but obviously the processing behind the screen is a bit different.

[11:20:23] peper03: jya_: No, I couldn't reproduce it. I tried on a couple of 'audio' DVDs, which use the same mechanism but I couldn't reproduce the crash. It's possible it's because they also have an audio track, so audio packets are being read too.

[13:19:10] jya_: peper03: the bug is in MythDVDPlayer::CalcMaxFFTime(), it ends up callin MythPlayer::TranslatePositionFrameToMs. player_ctx->recorder is null
[13:19:23] jya_: is null being dereferenced -> boom
[13:19:48] jya_: why would you want to access the recorder when we're in the middle of playback?
[13:22:46] jya_: this is a stichnot bug by the look of things.. In [c13683f20bb9] it assumes you're always in a recording while within MythPlayer… that's a bad assumption
[13:25:06] peper03: jya_: I made some changes to the duration display when showing a still (a proper still) a couple of weeks back, but I don't think that should affect this case.
[13:25:14] peper03: Have to go out for a bit...
[13:25:28] jya_: peper03: nah, the code where it crashes hasn't changed in years.
[13:25:34] jya_: bug is in fast forward
[13:26:04] jya_: to calculate the framerate (and as such guessing how many frames to skip), it looks at the framerate is received by the recorder
[13:26:18] jya_: that may work when you're watching something being recorded at the same time
[13:26:38] jya_: but for watching a DVD, recorder is null, so trying to access it is going to crash
[13:27:33] jya_: seems that if you're trying to watch anything that haven't been added to the database, you're going to end up with a crash
[14:01:06] jya_: peper03: I'm surprised you're not seeing this… i don't see why it would happen with my DVD only

[15:19:57] peper03: jya_: That code hasn't changed, but it's always possible some other bit of code has changed, causing it to take a different route. For example, my change [4be52bd] (https://github.com/MythTV/mythtv/commit/4be52bd) changed MythPlayer::GetTotalSeconds, which now calls TranslatePositionFrameToMs where it didn't before.
[15:25:37] stichnot: jya_: MythPlayer::TranslatePositionFrameToMs(-1) is supposed to mean "compute duration of in-progress recording". That API could definitely be improved. Is the DVD player passing -1 for some reason? (I haven't caught up on IRC yet)
[15:26:43] peper03: jya_: I'd be interested in logs. Just to get a better overall picture.
[15:29:11] peper03: Going back to that commit, though, MythDVDPlayer::GetTotalSeconds overrides MythPlayer and doesn't call it, so that shouldn't cause any issues, but my point is the same.
[15:48:28] peper03: jya_: Ok, I can reproduce it on a different DVD. Assuming the conditions are the same as with you (and the callstack seems to be the same), it happens when I skip when the DVDRingBuffer is about to show a still frame and is waiting for the player to empty its buffers. The logs show a lot of 'DVDNAV_WAIT' entries. If you skip then, you get a crash.

[22:31:49] dekarl: thanks for the offer, I think the whole multirec / preroll / overrecord needs a rework so hard padding because less of an issue and soft padding can go back to its intended usage (which I remember as giving a recording device the necessary time to turn dishes, fire up STBs etc).

[22:33:13] knightr: (just wondering if I should warn the other translators as well...)
[22:34:47] NightMonkey (NightMonkey!~NightrMon@pdpc/supporter/professional/nightmonkey) has joined #mythtv
[22:35:13] knightr: if it's the tv and audio channel problem like I said he most likely can't do anything about it (we had the same problem in French and the problem is most liikely present in all the other translation where there are two different words for tv and audio channels...)
[22:36:17] dekarl: yes, that was it (and the mail was sent some time ago). When I get time I'll try to prepare a patch instead for him to approve
[22:36:50] knightr: dekarl, it's always them who modify the translation, never us...
[22:37:13] knightr: (not even me which is supposed to be the dev and liaison with them...)
[22:37:53] dekarl: I was thinking of me switching into the role of a fellow german user who joins the translation team ;) (if only for one patch)
[22:38:19] knightr: dekarl, it would actually caused both him and me problems.. :)
[22:39:26] dekarl: then we should switch to a proper internationalization toolkit that allows multiple editors per translation (preferably with a simple web interface for contributers and some kind of approval workflow for the translation team)
[22:39:29] dekarl: :D
[22:39:31] knightr: (him because he's currently working on it, me because if I don't regenerate the translation on our side properly it will nnot actually be fixed...)
[22:39:52] knightr: dekarl, I'm already looking into this...
[22:40:04] knightr: and I have a software in mind...
[22:40:21] dekarl: I was thinking of finding a time slot where he's not working on it.
[22:40:47] knightr: I just need to prepare a few things before we are ready to use it...
[22:40:59] dekarl: sounds promising :)
[22:41:20] dekarl: either way, I got to hit sack. First day at work after six weeks off tomorrow. Will be hard enough
[22:41:33] knightr: dekarl, as I said, we (devs) never touch, we let them update them... There was one exception and that was when we merged in MythVideo into core...
[22:42:09] knightr: s/never touch/never modify the translations ourselves/
[22:42:15] knightr: dekarl, good night!
[22:43:03] dekarl: knightr: I find giving the translator a patch the easiest way to describe what I'm thinking off. Instead of explaining it in prose
[22:44:05] knightr: dekarl, he might very well not be able to apply it since his copy of the translation has been updated, it's no longer the same as the one we have (and by far...) :)
[22:45:09] knightr: he can read it with a text editor tough so he should be able to figure it out...
[22:45:15] knightr: :)
