[11:24:04] stuartm: danielk22: re http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/5106 – I'm wondering what harm comes from initialising those members anyway (With the exception of the QString)? It will stop coverity, cppcheck et al complaining and can't have a particularly serious impact on performance

[12:24:20] danielk22: stuartm: Yeah, with the exception of the QString ( which can just be initialized with () ) there should be negligible performance impact.
[12:27:09] stuartm: QString is initialised by default anyway, so I usually don't bother explicitly initialising it
[12:29:55] danielk22: yup, and initialized fairly efficiently

[15:06:21] stuartm: gary_buhrmaster: they aren't public, and at least to me their site is complicated, I'm working on a script which uses their API to construct a page like this one – http://code.mythtv.org/cppcheck/index.html

[16:00:04] danielk221: That thing at the top of functions is a docstring, a type of man page for the function that editors and interactive shells like ipython use to provide context sensitive help.
[16:02:09] danielk221: (Not that I disagree entirely, the tristate if syntax is weird. I always forget the exception catching keyword as it is not catch.)
[16:06:49] stuartm: maybe I don't like it just because it's different :)
[16:08:16] stuartm: I'd be done already if it was perl, and we're only talking about a 300 odd line script, 3/4 of which was borrowed from other scripts (one coverity example in python, and the other the perl script I wrote for cppcheck reports)
[16:09:08] stuartm: constantly having to go back to python docs for simple stuff really slows things down (lack of post-increment just tripped me up for example)

[16:28:44] stuartm: dekarl: MUNUNSED is the proper way (vs void casting) and is portable since we can edit the define for different platforms and compilers, no idea how Q_UNUSED compares ...
[16:32:09] stuartm: I don't particularly mind if you want to change it to use (void), it's the standard way of doing it I guess
[16:32:48] stuartm: although strictly speaking for C++ the syntax is static_cast<void>() vs (void)()
[16:40:41] dekarl: well, I don't care how we do it, I just find mixing various styles confusing and we don't have the point in our coding style. thats all.

[16:47:23] dekarl: one point about unused parameters cought my eye though. What if you mark a parameter as unused and later use it anyway? The suggested way to avoid it was commenting out / removing the parameter name from the implementation

[16:50:50] gary_buhrmaster: dekarl: btw, that reminded me, does the coding style article still represent the (more or less) complete current best practices, or should it be improved?
[16:51:06] danielk221: If the param is completely unused, just remove it's name. In the example commit change node to /*node*/

If you add that to a method overriding another it causes C++11 builds to fail if signatures are changes so it is no longer an override.. The icc buildbot compiles for C++11 so any breaking commit would trigger it to fail.
[17:41:05] danielk221: It is only for libmythbase at the moment, but that can be fixed. (I wasn't sure why each lib has it's own mythexp.h header in the first place so I didn't try to fix that.)
[17:43:15] stuartm: danielk221: no I missed that, but I remember you mentioned it a few weeks ago as a feature of C++11, it's a fantastic addition

[17:46:31] stuartm: well VS anyway
[17:47:24] danielk221: Ah, thanks for digging that up. Then we can just put the non-symbol visibility stuff elsewhere in a header shared by all libs.
[17:47:26] stuartm: but I'm not entirely sure I follow why all the other defines needed duplicating, surely each *exp.h could include the one from mythbase

[22:16:48] gary_buhrmaster: stuartm: Thanks for the coverity report. FWIIW, I am looking at a (manually run/adjusted) scan-build static analyzer output, and it found a couple of things coverity did not. I will try to create patches later.
[23:10:31] danielk22: jpabq: jpabq_: I just pushed a devel/rtp branch I had locally. I may have a more recent version somewhere, let me know if this doesn't have the missing commits.
