[11:32:29] stuarta: danielk22: ^^^
[11:34:51] ** _Dweller playing with streaming & recording data from a hauppauge hd pvr on a raspberry pi.. currently using home grown C code to read from /dev/video0 but glitches during recording mean the stream has to be post processed to correct the ts data, so I'm having a read thru how myth handles the device, and it looks like it's got most of an h264 stream reader going on there. **
[11:35:41] _Dweller: I'm kinda hoping that bit helps myth write out slightly more valid transport streams from the device than I do ;p
[11:37:20] danielk22: _Dweller: We avoid the glitches earlier in the process by having a dedicated DeviceReadBuffer class.
[11:38:09] ** _Dweller has a look at the device read buffer class =) **
[11:38:17] danielk22: It has it's own thread and buffer so we have buffering ahead of the processing.
[11:39:11] danielk22: We also have a ThreadedFileWriter which provides buffering on writing to disk so the processing is less likely to get blocked.
[11:39:45] _Dweller: I'm running a thread handling read from the device at the mo, which also writes out to the fd's of the sockets (for streaming) and the fd of the file when recording.. but the device drops the signal every so often (blue lights go out etc), and I have to reopen it & resume reading..
[11:40:24] danielk22: The same thread handles the fd of the file and the fd of the device?
[11:40:52] _Dweller: yeah at the mo.. I only mashed the code together at the w/e so I've not put in any buffering yet
[11:42:09] danielk22: Writing to disk will occasionally block long enough to make the device buffers overflow.
[11:42:10] _Dweller: 2 secs and I'll throw it on pastebin.. I think the device drops are due to using spdif with it.
[11:42:53] danielk22: Oh, yeah when I used an HD-PVR I didn't use the spdif. Too unreliable.
[11:43:27] _Dweller: no argument there ;p I moved to a colossus on the main rig, which is why I have the hd-pvr spare to tinker with..

[11:50:34] _Dweller: pastebin seemingly disliked me.. I put it here.. http://dpaste.org/apA0Z/ I'm reading the device inside the StreamHandler fn, with a poll to track when I've had no data from it for a while & do the close & reopen (with a little delay to allow the device to settle after the reopen)

[13:03:31] stichnot: sphery, stuartm: When I'm in e.g. the PlaybackBox and I bring up a hierarchical menu, navigate down, then try to navigate back up via the LEFT key, the menu just closes. I finally discovered that the code is actually receiving an ESCAPE keypress thanks to a line in my theme: <triggerevent context="Global" action="ESCAPE">LEFT</triggerevent>
[13:11:08] stichnot: I'm wondering if the theme is just broken, or if there is a legitimate reason for mapping LEFT->ESCAPE and RIGHT->SELECT for the MythPopupBox window, and if the latter, if there's a way to make the menu hierarchy behave nicely despite the remapping.
[13:14:16] stichnot: stuartm: btw, recently I've been learning about MythMenu and I wonder if I've been reinventing part of the wheel in my MenuBase class by not using MythMenu
[13:15:27] stichnot: for whatever reason markk didn't use the MythMenu hierarchy when he overhauled the Playback OSD menu, and I was basically following that
[13:17:52] stuartm: mythmenu came after that, Paul wrote it iirc
[13:19:51] stuartm: stichnot: there's a reason to want that behaviour in the menu, but that's probably the wrong way to achieve it (remapping bindings to another key in the context, instead of mapping to an action)
[13:19:52] stichnot: ah, interesting.
[13:20:46] stoffel (stoffel!~quassel@pD9E40ADD.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) has joined #mythtv
[13:21:00] stuartm: I never reviewed the triggerevent stuff, so I missed the opportunity to comment on that flaw

[13:22:35] stichnot: I understand that the triggerevent stuff was added so that themes with one-dimensional layouts could get the old behavior of select/back with the arrow keys, right?
[13:24:47] stuartm: yeah, some people wanted the old 'accelerated key' behaviour back, triggerevent was the compromise
[13:25:41] stuartm: I think it was sphery and/or jpabq who implemented it, but my memory is pretty hazy
[13:27:47] sphery: stichnot: yeah, that all came out of the shortcut keys thing that was mostly removed with the mythui transition, and I finished removing it from the last couple places, then people yelled and said they wanted it back
[13:28:30] sphery: I think paulh ended up committing a patch from Bill Meek (IIRC)--it definitely wasn't me (as I don't believe a theme should have the ability to remap my RIGHT action to DELETE, etc.)
[13:29:15] stichnot: well I for one appreciate the outcome, though apparently my theme may have overapplied it...
[13:29:39] stichnot: it might have been Ron Frazier with the original patch
[13:29:52] sphery: I like the ability to use left/right for easier navigation, but I don't like the way it was implemented
[13:29:57] sphery: and, yeah, it was Ron's
[13:33:14] stuartm: sphery: OK sorry for blaming you :)
[13:33:39] sphery: and I especially hate that the current approach means that navigation is inconsistent (which was the whole reason I finished removing the hard-coded parts left after mythui conversion)
[13:34:16] sphery: that said, I haven't put in the time to implement something better, so I deserve some blame :)
[13:35:39] stuartm: no more than any of us who haven't come up with a better solution
[13:35:49] sphery: stichnot: also, ttbomk, we wouldn't have had this problem in the first place if the osd menu were done with a screen stack, like the rest of mythui uses--because then dismissing the sub menu would actually just "reveal" the parent menu
[13:35:56] sphery: stuartm would know better than I, though
[13:37:16] sphery: anyway, main thread resulting from the removal of the last parts of it is at http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/dev/490922#490922
[13:37:17] stuartm: it would have just created a new problem though, since we don't want the user to have to navigate back through the parent menus just to exit the menu system entirely
[13:38:18] sphery: well, the solution to that problem would have also fixed the "just send escape in a loop until we're back at the main menu" hack we use for jump points :)
[13:38:33] stuartm: Paul's mythmenu approach was a reasonable solution, maybe not exactly what I would have done but I'm happy enough with it
[13:38:52] sphery: (i.e. if ESCAPE just stepped through and dismissed the screens in the stack)
[13:39:13] stuartm: sphery: thanks for the reminder, really need to fix that
[13:39:18] sphery: cool... I don't know anything about mythmenu, so it sounds like the way to go
[13:39:28] stichnot: MythDialogBox::keyPressEvent() already has logic for mapping arrow keys to a "select" or "back" action depending on the buttonlist layout, maybe that was added after the triggerevent stuff, or maybe my theme was too aggressive about adding triggerevents
[13:39:55] sphery: stuartm: hehe, yeah, I have a start on that, but got discouraged when I found that the mix of mythui/non-mythui makes it /much/ more complicated
[13:40:12] stichnot: sphery: I thought I fixed the repeated ESCAPE implementation of jump points a while ago
[13:40:53] stuartm: AFAIK there are just two non-mythui popups left, both in the media monitor but neither is very simple to remove (I have an idea but so far not the time)
[13:40:56] sphery: you may have--I know you were doing some work on it, but I didn't follow closely
[13:41:44] stichnot: stuartm: the playback osd menu code can distinguish between LEFT and ESCAPE — LEFT goes up one level and ESCAPE closes the menu
[13:41:58] stuartm: otherwise it's just the settings screens, but those are a little easier since they are invariably accessed from the root, we can just close those _then_ the mythui screens
[13:42:52] stuartm: and if stichnot fixed this already then it's all moot ;)
[13:43:07] stuartm: stichnot: mythmenu does the same
[13:47:51] stichnot: Jump points are now implemented by sending the EXIT_TO_MENU event, which any active object and receive and do its cleanup. http://code.mythtv.org/trac/changeset/307dac8 . . . 1d143/mythtv
