[13:28:05] stichnot: stuartm: regarding 10581. Indeed, I was completely unaware of MythUIButtonList::MoveItemUpDown(). You guys are probably right about structuring this as an XML config (which also solves the problem that comes from a fixed-length setting string).
[13:29:02] stichnot: What do you think of an option to MythUIButtonList that enables 0–9 numeric key accelerators? e.g., my DISH STB does this on all its setup menus.

[14:04:24] sphery: I'd be all for adding accelerators, but as actual specified actions that users can map themselves--we have too many places where we force overload the meaning of a button and it causes problems for users trying to remap keys or work with "other" remotes
[14:05:01] sphery: and you could then map them to 0–9 or whatever

[14:20:01] stichnot: sphery: when a menu is displayed, very few keybindings are active, so it's a new frontier :)
[14:37:52] sphery: yeah, but making them user-assignable (and user-findable through the key bindings editor) makes it much easier to use--especially for those with remotes different from yours :)

[15:50:07] clever (clever!~clever@47.54.82.69) has joined #mythtv
[15:56:04] sphery: stichnot: Yeah, something like that. Ideally we wouldn't add default keybindings (because it will likely cause conflicts for some users)--and I know that's annoying, but once I get the key bindings "themes" done, it will be easy to make redistributable bindings "presets" without having to worry about conflicts.

[16:18:21] stuartm: stichnot: buttonlists are used in almost every screen and not just for menus, so hardcoding 0–9 to jump around the list would be problematic, plus I've heard several different ideas about how it should work e.g. 3 should jump to the 3rd item, vs the 3rd page, vs 30% down the list, vs entries starting with the letter D (mobile phone style)
[16:20:38] stuartm: what might work for someone in one screen probably won't work in another and the very last thing we want is a confusing mess of different behaviours in different screens; e.g. the mobile phone style jump to 'letter' assumes that the list is sorted alphabetically, which is only the case in a couple of places

[17:01:59] stichnot: stuartm: what I was suggesting is that MythUIButtonList could have an additional option to allow 0–9 accelerators for the first 10 items. This would add the prefix [n] to the first 10 items, and handle the ACCEL_n keybindings. I guess I wasn't thinking about the non-menu uses of the buttonlist, but in my opinion this would only make sense for menu buttonlists.
[17:04:57] stichnot: but actually in my case as a "power user", I never actually use the numeric accelerators, it's too much trouble to look down at the remote. The best optimization is to order the list by popularity.
[17:05:54] stichnot: so with that said, I could just drop this particular accelerator idea, and leave it in the bin of ideas for later
