[13:05:26] | knightr: | stuartm, yep, I have given it a lot of though (per-theme translation) and this would eventually be the best way to distribute theme translations. Translators could choose themselves which theme they want to translate, not the one we impose them and when a theme is updated translators could update their translations and it would eventually be downloaded with the theme, not the next time we do a release. |
[13:08:10] | knightr: | I could setup everything needed to generate the translation files on a per-theme basis but it would complexify the translator's job too much I think so it would be preferable to wait until translation can be done online.. |

[20:01:13] | knightr: | stuartm, Thankk you! Doing it like you suggested made me realize it was indeed the previous patches that this pull request contains which were causing the problem. The problem now is that the pull request doesn't get closed automatically as it should most likely because I don't cimmit to github directly and I see no place where I can close it... |

[20:04:28] | stuartm: | knightr: I can close it, you need privs for the mythtv repo on github, presumably you were never given them because you joined us after we switched to the local repo? |
[20:05:40] | knightr: | stuartrm, when I joined we were still using SVN... |
[20:06:07] | stuartm: | knightr: heh, guess my memory isn't that great |
[20:07:18] | stuartm: | hmm, you are in the Developers group on github, that should give you pull close perms if I'm understanding this correctly |
[20:07:37] | knightr: | stuartm, np... |
[20:07:40] | stuartm: | the close button is down the bottom, below and to the right of the comment field |

[20:09:07] | knightr: | thanks! |
[20:10:08] | knightr: | If Nick continues to issue pull request we\ll have to fix it/or have it fixed, I can\t always ask the others to do it for me... |
[20:12:35] | stuartm: | might be that it requires a higher level of perms, but githubs permission system isn't very granular, it's all or nothing and for security* we like to keep high level perms, be it for trac/github/wiki/website to a limited number of people |
[20:13:28] | knightr: | Kenn i is probably not able to do it either since he is the one who apply the previous patches... |
[20:13:38] | stuartm: | * It only takes one person having their account/machine compromised to allow a ne'er-do-well to wipeout configurations etc |
[20:14:21] | stuartm: | knightr: we'll see whether that button is missing for others with developer permissions |
[20:16:41] | knightr: | the people whose pc needs to be compromised are easy to guess though but you are right, it diminishes the chances... |
[20:16:48] | knightr: | thanks... |
[20:17:00] | stuartm: | heh, why do they shape mobile phones so that if you grip them too tightly at the wrong point they slip out of you hand like a wet bar of soap? Mine just flew across the room |
[20:19:28] | stuartm: | knightr: if the attack is targeted that's absolutely true, most aren't though, a script kiddie who accidentally finds a poorly secured ssh server then digs through files/emails and finds passwords to other things, before you know it they've wiped a server just because they can |
[20:20:24] | knightr: | stuartm, that's done on purpose so that you need to buy another one when you break it before the end of its normal useful life... |
[20:20:40] | stuartm: | github have had user accounts compromised before, it will happen again some day, we can only do our best to minimise the potential damage |
[20:24:57] | stuartm: | hmm, I still haven't found a recording that will transcode in master, everything fails before it's even started |
[20:25:30] | stuartm: | Beirdo: is lossless transcoding (with cutlists) working for you? |
[20:26:40] | stuartm: | it was working in 0.25, although causing corruption at the cut points |
[20:31:11] | Beirdo: | I haven't tried in a while. I almost never use it other than when debugging |
[20:31:28] | Beirdo: | we put in a patch to try to fix that fairly recently, no? |
[20:32:03] | Beirdo: | also, if you could try the patch on #11110, see if it fixes the "crash on RealTime Signal 0" fun? |
[20:32:03] | ** MythLogBot http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/11110 **
[20:32:36] | Beirdo: | it should log some details when it happens now, including the type of signal, and PID that caused it (if a process) |
[20:33:15] | Beirdo: | I think it's ready to commit, but I'd prefer verification by someone who is seeing the problem first :) |
[20:34:11] | stuartm: | Beirdo: I'll try the patch, but I don't see the signal crash consistently so it's hard to know whether it's working or not :) |
[20:34:32] | Beirdo: | heh, well, it should log when it gets the signal rather than crashing, but yeah |
[20:34:44] | Beirdo: | proving a negative is impossible |
[20:34:45] | Beirdo: | heh |
[20:35:00] | Beirdo: | I'm just hoping a signal hits and you see it being caught :) |
[20:35:21] | stuartm: | the corruption may or may not be fixed, the problem I'm seeing at the moment is every transcode job erroring apparently on the first frame with "mpeg2fix.cpp:1178 (BuildFrame) avcodec_encode_video failed (0)" |
[20:35:24] | Beirdo: | superm1: if you are around, same goes for you, since it hits for you more predictably |
[20:35:47] | stuartm: | Beirdo: ah, yeah well if we're logging the receipt of the signal that makes it much easier :) |
[20:35:47] | Beirdo: | now that's screwy |
[20:37:14] | Beirdo: | you think that's serious enough to call blocker/critical for this release? |
[20:37:28] | Beirdo: | if so, we should look into fixing it :) |
[20:37:45] | stuartm: | Beirdo: if it's not just me having problems, then yes, I know a lot of people transcode everything to save space |
[20:38:18] | Beirdo: | OK. Yeah, it sounds pretty nasty. We should at least take a look. |
[20:38:19] | stuartm: | personally I only do it now when I'm saving a 5 min clip from something much longer |
[20:38:57] | Beirdo: | ow. dammit. there goes that nail. |
[20:39:10] | stuartm: | :) |
[20:39:19] | Beirdo: | the edge caught on something.. riiip. |
[20:39:44] | Beirdo: | sucks to be me. anyways... |
[20:40:00] | jpabq: | Come December, I will likely have more time to work on Myth. I have been informed that my entire department at work is being eliminated just before Thanksgiving. I have been with this company for 19 years. They are giving me 12 weeks of severance — is that a reasonable amount? |
[20:40:05] | stuartm: | yeah, lost one myself this week, caught it when re-laying some sunken paving bricks on the drive |
[20:40:57] | stuartm: | and I've a huge blood blister on my left thumb where I crushed it doing the same job ... I'm clumsy |
[20:41:02] | Beirdo: | jpabq: OUCH. that's lame! 12 weeks for 19 years? I'd generally think about 1 week per year for long service, but it's better than nothing. |
[20:41:35] | Beirdo: | stuartm: yeah, I tend to be a bit on the klutz side myself |
[20:41:36] | jpabq: | Beirdo, yeah, I kinda expected the math to be more like 1 week per year. |
[20:42:11] | Beirdo: | I dunno if our expectations are just too high, but that'd be about what I'd expect |
[20:42:30] | jpabq: | Beirdo, my sister has a job interview in Olympia next week. Maybe I should move there :-) |
[20:42:34] | Beirdo: | minimum, of course. |
[20:42:36] | Beirdo: | :) |
[20:42:39] | stuartm: | jpabq: yeah, that sucks, although the severance is a little better than I've heard others are getting at the moment (second hand) |
[20:42:40] | Beirdo: | sure :) |
[20:42:55] | Beirdo: | then you can be jpoly or something :) |
[20:43:03] | jpabq: | :-D |
[20:43:24] | Beirdo: | not sure if they even have an airport in Olympia itself, or if they depend on SeaTac |
[20:43:41] | jpabq: | I have heard that Olympia is a nice town. 40 miles from SeaTac |
[20:43:43] | stuartm: | ooh, that's where the abq comes from? I always wondered that |
[20:43:59] | Beirdo: | we can always use more MythTV types in the PNW :) |
[20:44:20] | jpabq: | stuartm, yeah, I have lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico since '89 |
[20:44:23] | Beirdo: | stuartm: yup, it took me a bit to decipher, until he told me the city once. :) |
[20:45:04] | Beirdo: | well, you could always be jpsea if nothing else closer :) |
[20:45:25] | Beirdo: | Never been into Olympia that I can recall, but I like Seattle, Tacoma... Portland... |
[20:45:39] | Beirdo: | other than being political, I'm sure it's a lovely place |
[20:45:56] | jpabq: | political? |
[20:45:58] | Beirdo: | at least it's only state politics :) |
[20:46:03] | Beirdo: | state capitol is there |
[20:46:12] | jpabq: | Ah! |
[20:46:47] | Beirdo: | but that likely won't make much of a difference |
[20:46:57] | Beirdo: | sorry to hear about the impending job loss. Sucky |
[20:47:44] | jpabq: | I don't know what job she is applying for. She has a PhD in toxicology. |
[20:48:27] | Beirdo: | interesting choice of studies :) |
[20:48:43] | jpabq: | Beirdo, thanks. I am not freaking out, yet. I can panic next year. Been a long time since I have not had a job, but I admit that I was getting a bit burned out on this one. |
[20:50:27] | Beirdo: | well, you also have a bit of warning which can help you take time to find a new one before it's an emergency... chance if it happens that you get one... |
[20:50:29] | jpabq: | main reason I have not done much Myth development this year, is the long hours at work. |
[20:50:43] | Beirdo: | yeah, same reason I've been pretty silent lately |
[20:51:00] | stuartm: | Beirdo: it was probably an ffmpeg resync that broke transcoding, but I'll start by reverting the corruption fix locally and see if that makes any difference since it's the only change made to mythtranscode in 0.26 |
[20:51:05] | Beirdo: | winter often tends to be highest productivity for me |
[20:51:29] | Beirdo: | stuartm: yeah, likely the only part we haven't fully tested from the resyncs |
[20:52:04] | stuartm: | winter is usually when people are contributing most, cold evenings/weekends, gets darker earlier etc |
[20:52:21] | Beirdo: | yep. No incentive to spend "spare" time outside |
[20:52:29] | jpabq: | I could probably go to work for Sandia National Labs, but that does not appeal to me. |
[20:52:53] | Beirdo: | heh |
[20:53:14] | Beirdo: | well, there are (generally) plenty of tech jobs here in Seattle |
[20:53:39] | Beirdo: | so, depending on what you are looking for, you may find something up here yet ;) |
[20:54:06] | jpabq: | Big change from 365 days of sun, to 365 days of clouds ;-) |
[20:55:21] | Beirdo: | well, 305 days |
[20:55:22] | Beirdo: | :) |
[20:55:33] | jpabq: | :) |
[20:55:46] | Beirdo: | we average 60 days of sun a year. This year we had nearly that in a string |
[20:56:07] | Beirdo: | it rained twice in the last 60 days or so, and the rest has been nice sunny days |
[20:56:23] | jpabq: | Damn climate change :-p |
[20:56:38] | Beirdo: | yeah, it's been an odd one |
[20:56:48] | Beirdo: | nice and sunny right now, in fact |
[20:56:50] | wagnerrp: | yeah, ruining all the best disparaging remarks about the pacific northwest |
[20:57:15] | Beirdo: | nah, there's still the treehuggers in their Birkenstocks and sandals :) |
[20:57:57] | Beirdo: | smoking their pot |
[21:00:23] | Beirdo: | ESPN's bus was parked right outside the church this morning... |
[21:00:34] | stuartm: | aren't Birkenstocks just a brand/design of sandal? |
[21:00:43] | Beirdo: | big game tomorrow (Packers vs Seahawks) |
[21:01:09] | Beirdo: | stuartm: yeah, but one that's somehow especially linked to the more hippie-type that seems to love it up here |
[21:01:21] | Beirdo: | I wear other sandals :) |
[21:05:33] | stuartm: | I don't think I've worn sandals since I was 5 years old and they were part of the school uniform, maybe a weather thing |
[21:06:06] | Beirdo: | I wear them pretty much year round. I fit in up here, I guess. even with wool socks in the winter. |
[21:07:01] | Beirdo: | I am well aware that I'm odd ;) |
[21:07:06] | stuartm: | ok, reverting the corruption fix didn't help |
[21:09:10] | stuartm: | it would be nice if just once we went for a cycle without regressions |
[21:09:50] | Beirdo: | yeah. That ffmpeg sync was a doozy as it had been 18 months or whatever of changes, and many of the APIs had been deprecated |
[21:11:52] | Beirdo: | I'll take a look in a bit if you need a hand there |
[21:12:39] | Beirdo: | just transferring the music from church today onto my laptop so I can post it for the praise team (I run the sound board) |
[21:14:44] | Beirdo: | should be done soon :) |
[21:15:13] | stuartm: | I might call it a night and look at it fresh tomorrow |
[21:16:27] | stuartm: | I don't know the ffmpeg/avcodec_encode stuff at all, so I'd probably have to start with blind prodding and lots of LOG() calls to try and understand what's happening (or not) |
[21:17:06] | Beirdo: | OK, I'll take a look and see if I can't see the issue there. Got a ticket for it yet? |
[21:19:00] | stuartm: | no, opening one now |
[21:20:13] | ajuice (ajuice!~ajuice@203-158-39-92.dyn.iinet.net.au) has joined #mythtv
[21:20:16] | Beirdo: | Cool. |
[21:23:49] | stuartm: | just trying a transcode without a cutlist first, to see if that's relevant |
[21:24:17] | Beirdo: | good call |
[21:24:29] | natanojl (natanojl!~jonatan@c83-252-237-63.bredband.comhem.se) has quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[21:25:45] | stuartm: | ok, first one I tried without a cutlist worked |
[21:26:09] | stuartm: | although a more accurate test would be to try the exact same recording with and without, which I'm doing now |
[21:28:46] | stuartm: | ok, it didn't work, it just took longer to fail with the same error |
[21:30:32] | Beirdo: | wonderful |
[21:30:52] | stuartm: | http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/11118 |
[21:33:14] | Beirdo: | well that just sucks. :) Thanks |
[21:33:24] | Beirdo: | I'll see if I can't dig something up |
[21:38:34] | stuartm: | thanks for looking at it :) |
[21:41:05] | Beirdo: | no prob |
