[00:40:54] iamlindoro: It's needed for the program data window in the PBB-- so definitely necessary for the FE. Not sure how or whether it would affect internals like MythDownloadManager, but I suspect it doesn't

[01:04:33] iamlindoro: danielk22: dblain brought up a good point above-- presenting the values in UTC is not much good unless we also require that the inputs be in UTC-- now, we can probably also handle that, but I'm not totally sure if that would break anything w/r/t uPnP as IIRC the http request stuff is in libmythupnp and probably applies to some other stuff

[01:58:57] danielk22: iamlindoro: Good point, that needs to be handled too. I doubt it would break any UPnP stuff, I don't think the portions of that protocol that we implement uses date & time as such.
[02:00:25] iamlindoro: ok. I'll look at requiring UTC input, adapt my own app to work with the patch to make sure there's nothing I've forgotten, and try to get something in before I go out of town this weekend
[02:00:39] iamlindoro: going out of the TZ so would be a neat opportunity to test the theory ;)

[17:10:13] Captain_Murdoch: there is also a .html file generated for each stream. the .html version should be playable on at least the iphone/ipad/ipod. I tried it on my honeycomb 3.2 tablet, but can't get it to play any HLS streams, even demos from around the net, so it might work on honeycomb as well.

[17:44:02] markk: Captain_Murdoch: is the jw player free/open source? i.e. is that something we could add to the backend html ?
[17:46:34] iamlindoro: AIUI It's creative commons
[17:46:48] iamlindoro: and free
[17:47:12] iamlindoro: So probably a nice choice for our purposes, it's no less free than the existing flash player we're using
[17:50:59] danielk22: iamlindoro: I thought the existing player we were using was GPL, no? Isn't there an issue with mixing creative commons and GPLv2 except for some very specific circumstances when they are compatible?
[17:55:30] danielk22: Hey does anyone know if the RefererenceCounter downref debug was intended to be left in at VB_GENERAL ?
[17:55:37] iamlindoro: danielk22: Can't see how it would be more of a problem than the GPLv3 flash player we're using
[17:56:32] iamlindoro: danielk22: the notion fielded for the GPLv3 flash player was that since it was distinct from the rest of our code, it could be v3…. it seems like the same argument is just as valid/invalid for CC-BY-SA
[18:00:34] danielk22: iamlindoro: That may very well be a valid argument, but I'd step lightly & get the ok from the developer first.
[18:04:16] Captain_Murdoch: I haven't read over the jw player license, but they basically say it's free for non-commercial use and can be redistributed as long as we credit Jeroen. search for "releasing under gpl" on their site for a thread where he comments on redistribution of his CC player non-commercially.

[18:08:21] danielk22: It sounds like debian couldn't include it and ubuntu would need to stick it in the non-free repo. :|
[18:09:14] Captain_Murdoch: <joke>we could always provide a clickable link to trigger a MythDownloadManager download of the two .swf files</joke>
[18:09:58] danielk22: Captain_Murdoch: actually that would probably satisfy JW and debian...
[18:10:27] danielk22: As long as the link to download had "for non-commercial use only" or some such.
[18:11:15] markk: Captain_Murdoch: I'm sure you have a list already, but... there are some aspect ratio problems with anamorphic content. and playback is sometimes very blocky/low quality at the beginning of a stream. the file sizes are small for the first few chunks...
[18:11:30] Captain_Murdoch: it could be done via backend setup webpage.
[18:12:50] Captain_Murdoch: markk, yeah, I knew about non-square pixels but forgot to put that on my TODO. I'm not picking up the aspect ratio from the source for some reason, so assuming square pixles for now. I'll make a note. I think the playback startup is due to some libx264 settings which I still haven't mastered yet.
[18:13:24] Captain_Murdoch: making notes on my TODO about both.
[18:13:48] wagnerrp: i didnt check, but did you move the location of --enabled-libx264 out of the 'for mythffmpeg use only' in the configure help output?
[18:14:44] Captain_Murdoch: I didn't move it yet. it's not even required currently. that was a known issue marked in the commit log.
[18:14:47] iamlindoro: markk: Captain_Murdoch: danielk22: dblain: I have tested the changes to make the service API output UTC time and require it for input, including the most recent streaming additions. Things (myth web, third party apps, etc.) are working without issue. If there are no objections, I will commit tonight once I have adjusted the couple spots in the backend setup interface to present the local date to the user
[18:14:54] iamlindoro: wagnerrp: I have a patch for that
[18:14:58] iamlindoro: I will commit later
[18:15:36] wagnerrp: yeah, its a trivial change, but if you were putting together a list, may as well add it
[18:16:42] iamlindoro: wagnerrp: I was waiting to ping Captain_Murdoch to see if he wanted me to add --enable-libvpx to the visible list
[18:16:46] Captain_Murdoch: one currently-disabled ability of the committed code is to allow mythtranscode to spit out libavformat containers with libavcodec codecs. I tested with a webm container with vp8 video (libvpx) and vorbis audio, but when I regression tested before commit, that wasn't working well, so I disabled that functionality until I can investigate.
[18:17:18] dblain: iamlindoro: I'm good with the UTC changes.
[18:18:38] iamlindoro: dblain: OK-- thanks
[18:18:58] Captain_Murdoch: iamlindoro, I'm fine with it if you want to commit. I'll probably tackle the audio issue first before taking another look at generic container format support. doesn't hurt to expose libvpx setting before then though.
[18:19:18] iamlindoro: Captain_Murdoch: understood, thanks
[18:19:51] Captain_Murdoch: currently I'm using "--enable-libx264 --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libfaac --enable-libvpx --enable-nonfree"
[18:21:33] Captain_Murdoch: mainly testing the first two with HLS support, and then may take another look at AAC instead of or in addition to mp3. would be nice if I could verify whether honeycomb requires AAC as indicated in a doc I found or whether it will actually play HLS w/ mp3.
[18:30:37] iamlindoro: wagnerrp: Captain_Murdoch: pushed
[18:31:21] wagnerrp: if i add these to the gentoo ebuilds, do you want me to keep them disabled by default?
[18:31:54] iamlindoro: I think we'd want them to be enabled in packages
[18:32:06] iamlindoro: To avoid the "streaming doesn't work, myth sucks" as much as possible
[18:32:18] wagnerrp: i mean just for now, pre-release
[18:32:39] iamlindoro: Captain_Murdoch: is the --enable-nonfree necessary for external codec use? ISTR it was necessary for libfaac, but dunno about the others
[18:32:50] iamlindoro: wagnerrp: I dunno, seems to me if they're on master they want to be using master features
[18:33:11] Captain_Murdoch: if we can get a resolution to jw player and licensing, I'd like to take a crack at allowing mythweb to start/stop/play streams.
[18:33:26] Captain_Murdoch: iamlindoro, I think it was only for faac, but can't recall if mp3lame needed it as well.
[18:34:16] wagnerrp: Captain_Murdoch: the existing mechanism is pretty straight forward, see mythweb/modules/stream/stream_flv.pl
[18:34:30] Captain_Murdoch: if you didn't need it without faac then that's a reason to prefer mp3 over aac if I can't get the internal aac encoder to work in libavcodec. I've seen others talk about having to still use libfaac for HLS streaming vs the internal aac encoder.
[18:34:59] Captain_Murdoch: wagnerrp, yeah, I've messed with it when I wrote my original patch to have mythtranscode generate .flv
[18:35:06] iamlindoro: Captain_Murdoch: I think the most complicated thing for myth web will be the proxying rather than the stream control
[18:35:16] Captain_Murdoch: iamlindoro, yeah, I agree.
[18:36:29] wagnerrp: music already streams from the old mythxml locations if you want an example... modules/music/stream.php
[18:43:58] Captain_Murdoch: part of the issue is that jw player will want to read the URLs from the playlists and talk to the BE directly. I have some provisions in the code to handle this, but may need to pass the base URL in as an arg when adding the stream to allow this kind of proxying.
[18:45:01] Captain_Murdoch: so the playlist written for a mythweb-started stream would have a base url of something under mythweb. by default a stream would have a base of /Content/GetFile?StorageGroup=Streaming&FileName=
[18:45:35] Captain_Murdoch: meaning get the files from the place you got the playlist from.

Seems since we have real use for them--mythffmpeg and streaming, both--and are coming to rely on them for more and more things, we should enable them by default and then disable them if missing dependencies or if the use passes --disable-libx264 or whatever... That way, MythTV would work properly for users who install the right stuff, and those who are concerned about philosophy can specify the proper flags (or, if they're truly ...
