[03:52:36] sphery: jya: Did you see what danielk mentioned the other day about all the underlying decoding libraries ignoring dialnorm ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialnorm )
[03:53:27] jya: I didn't..
[03:53:39] sphery: 20101025 00:00:47< danielk22> I figured out why the volume of ATSC recordings is all over the place :) Both the ffmpeg and liba52 AC-3 decoders ignore dialnorm... the parameter that tells you how to adjust the volume so that different channels and programs stay within about 1dB...
[03:53:44] sphery: 20101025 00:02:50< danielk22> When you ignore it the volume can vary by up to 31 dB between channels and programs, or more if you go from an uncompressed program like a movie to a commercial..
[03:54:42] jya_ (jya_!~avenardj@gw1.hydrix.com) has joined #mythtv
[03:54:48] jya_: only added downmixing for the other codecs that ffmpeg didn't support (anything but ac3 and dts)
[03:55:31] Beirdo: sounds like ffmpeg ignores it too
[03:57:23] jya_: but why are people reporting it now..
[03:57:29] jya_: that's puzzling

[03:57:59] Beirdo: because it's been like this forever
[03:58:34] jya: sure.. but they would have complained before 0.24
[03:58:40] jya: seems something 0.24 introduced
[03:59:10] sphery: we've had people mentioning problems for a long time: http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/6569 + http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/changeset/15526 --so showing as far back as 3 years ago
[03:59:26] sphery: we've always just slapped a band-aid over the problem, though--never really fixed anything
[03:59:26] jya: referring to post on the user list
[03:59:50] Beirdo: and it was reported a while back
[04:00:15] jya: MarkS fix isn't really the way to fix this if the issue is ignoring dialnorm
[04:00:20] Beirdo: I remember there being some gain added to some channels (in a patch at least)
[04:00:55] jya: yes, there's one in that ticket
[04:00:56] sphery: yeah, I'm just saying we no longer have the hack from [15526], and other changes may have affected things, but there seems to be a more serious underlying problem. Yeah, not saying that #6569 is the right fix, either--just that people have been complaining about AC-3 volume for years
[04:01:47] sphery: and if we do ignore dialnorm, that sounds like a "more serious underlying problem" :)
[04:01:58] jya: ah, that could be where the difference come from
[04:02:02] jya: when was this patch removed?
[04:03:00] sphery: [15526] came out a long time ago... before 0.22, at least
[04:03:03] sphery: IIRC
[04:03:19] jya: so people would have not seen a difference between 0.24 and 0.23
[04:03:29] jya: trying to find what could have happened
[04:03:34] jya: it's not obvious to me
[04:03:40] jya: other than a change in ffmpeg
[04:03:48] Beirdo: most likely, people have just been living with it
[04:04:10] sphery: but--TTBOMK, and I fully admit to not following ffmpeg dev--there have been many changes to the code in libav* that handles gain
[04:04:30] sphery: which IIRC, is why we removed the [15526] hack
[04:06:04] sphery: OK, I stand corrected, [15526] was removed in [15578] (3 days later) because of http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/311980#311980

[16:00:10] danielk22: abqjp: While you're there...the SetRecordingStatus() on the IsErrored() condition uses m_recStatus outside the lock. Instead it should just explicitly use rsFailed.
[16:01:03] abqjp: I figured I would just move SetRecordingStatus down into the UPDATE_RECORDING block. Probably should mutex it, though.
[16:02:50] danielk22: *shrug* There several ways to do it that are correct, up to you.

[16:08:20] danielk22: gigem: if recording A runs from 12:00 to 13:00 and B runs from 12:30 to 13:30, what I get is one recording that runs from 12:00–13:00 and the other 13:00–13:30.

[19:24:54] gigem: danielk22: why did you put in the "s for multi-word titles and subtitles in PI::toString(kTitleSubtitle)? i don't know about the other uses, but it's distracting in the scheduler output to sometimes have and sometimes not have "s. fwiw, i'd rather not see any "s unless the user of PI::toString() asks for them.

[20:12:11] danielk22: gigem: It's just to help tell the start and end of each string. So if the title is 'X: Blah Blah' and the subtitle is 'Ack Ack Ack' you know that Blah Blah belongs to the Title. Many conventions were being used, so I just picked one that seemed to make the most sense in the general case.
[20:12:51] danielk22: I don't think there is anything wrong with creating a new kScheduler format as it is a rather special case.
[20:13:20] danielk22: Or even kCompactTitleSubtitle, for more general use.
[20:20:18] danielk22: jpabq: It appears ChannelBase::SelectChannel() is creating a race condition with the signal monitor :|
[20:20:38] stuartm: when it comes to the UI we're trying to get away from hard-coded formatting, the templating stuff is flexible enough that it's not necessary
[20:27:09] danielk22: stuartm: For the most part ProgramInfo::toString() output isn't exposed in the UI, it's mostly used in VERBOSE macros where you want consistency of output and as little flexibility as possible.

[21:41:06] sphery: OK, I know that I keep going on about this, but I just have to ask when does it stop being a bunch of settings and start being a theme (if not an OSD theme, then a caption/subtitle theme)? So far we have settings, "Subtitle Font", "Subtitle text zoom percentage", and "Black background for closed captioning" (and currently hard code 9 fonts types for ATSC captions that we'll eventually have to make user-modifiable, again). In ...
[21:41:12] sphery: ... http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/dev/457810#457810 we have a user wanting to add a new setting, "Subtitle background transparency percentage."
[21:41:20] sphery: I'd really like to see these visual display and layout settings theme controlled--which would also open up the opportunity to eventually support any of the other theme-specifiable properties, for example font color, style, stretch, ... and would allow fonts to be distributed with the theme so users don't have to first do a system install of the fonts (or wonder why their frontend has ugly captions after upgrade because the new system ...
[21:41:26] sphery: ... doesn't have the fonts installed).
[21:41:28] sphery: I don't care whether it's a completely separate theme type (Caption Theme) or just a different file in the theme (caption.xml) or even defined in the existing base.xml/osd.xml . And, FWIW, I have a patch that puts the font face specification--including ATSC fonts--into the theme, and would be happy to work on putting the rest into the theme using whichever approach others think is best.

[22:00:37] stuartm: sphery: I'm not affected by text-based captions and so you could say that I don't really care, I will suggest that if made themable that it's a separate theme from the OSD, there's nothing to stop themers including it as part of their package just as they can do now with menu themes etc
[22:03:17] sphery: Thanks... I'll see if I can come up with an initial implementation for comment.
[22:03:19] stuartm: my reservations over themed captions comes from a perceived difference in goals for a UI theme (aesthetics) vs captions (legibility above all)

[22:10:42] stuartm: mostly I don't see there being the same diversity of caption styles that we'd expect to see with the UI, basically they'll always end up in roughly the same position on-screen (some formats might even specify exact positioning?), they'll pick a clear font, they'll use a simple and muted colour palette on a dark (black) background
