[21:46:34] jpabq: knightr, I will be around for a while, if you need anything.
[22:50:02] knightr: jpabq, I need to make the field way too large so I have pinged the other language team member to see if he agrees with another way to word the sentence that causes problem...
[22:52:07] knightr: (and I just checked and we already use the word I want to use to shorten that sentence in a similar context...)
[22:52:28] jpabq: knightr, what language?
[22:52:47] knightr: jpabq, French
[22:53:32] jpabq: I must not be looking at the right thing, then. I tried French, and all the menu items descriptions fit, with a width of 500.
[22:53:43] jpabq: Are you taking about something else?
[22:55:55] knightr:
[22:56:19] knightr: Could anything on my PC cause that?
[22:56:40] knightr: (ps: my screen resolution is 1920x1080)
[22:58:10] jpabq: Ah, I didn't go deep enough...
[22:59:20] knightr: oops, I pasted the wrong sentence there though but the problem is the same...
[22:59:45] jpabq: Yeah, the area would have to be MUCH bigger. Could go with a smaller font, I suppose.
[22:59:47] knightr:
[23:00:18] knightr: yes, it touches the MythTV in the middle...
[23:00:30] knightr: (when I make it fit)
[23:01:43] knightr: like I said I pinged the other team member to see if he agrees with replacing some words in that sentence with other which have the same meaning
[23:02:12] knightr: (at least for me)
[23:04:33] knightr: with some luck he'll reply before going to sleep (he's in France which means it's passed midnight where he is...)
[23:07:37] jpabq: knightr, if necessary, I can make the area larger in the vertical direction, allowing for three lines of description.
[23:09:00] stuartm: it's a real shame that some languages are so much wordier than others, especially French, it makes it much harder to create a theme that has room for French but doesn't look empty with English
[23:11:05] stuartm: I wonder how many pages shorter the English translation of 'Le Comte de Monte Cristo' is ... think I'll have to check the next time I'm in a bookshop
[23:12:30] jpabq: knightr, It still looks okay with enough room for three lines of description.
[23:12:36] knightr: jpabq, that could be another solution too but if it changes the look too much, don't do it, I'll see what we can do.. I could check the same sentence in other languages too but (like Greek and Russian which according to our stats seem to have the same problem) but who know maybe even in those languages that sentence is shorter...
[23:12:46] jpabq: stuartm, believe me I know.
[23:14:16] stuartm: and you can almost forget about Arabic and other RTL languages, I did hope we'd see people create themes specifically for RTL with appropriate layouts
[23:14:17] knightr: stuartm, LOL, I certainly which French wasn't that wordy believe me... There is some possibility to shorten that sentence though because it was worded a little more wordier than it could have been...
[23:14:44] jpabq: stuartm, I was really struggling getting simple buttons texts to look good (OK, Done, Finished). That rash of changes I made to the minsize stuff a month ago, was so I could use minsize to stand-alone buttons to grow if necessary to accommodate the text.
[23:14:49] knightr: stuartm, don't we have an Hebrew translation?
[23:15:06] knightr: (but my memory could be playing tricks on me...)
[23:15:24] stuartm: knightr: we did at one point, I don't know if it's being actively worked on though
[23:15:34] jpabq: should be: to get stand-alone buttons to grow..
[23:16:23] stuartm: there was also a full Arabic translation, part of an Arabic-centric fork, but they never submitted it for inclusion
[23:16:42] knightr: jpabq, up to you for the threw lines, I think we can shorten that particular sentence a little more...
[23:17:46] stuartm: jpabq: I was considering using that in my theme, but I'm concerned about the imbalance it would cause in the layout, so I'm instead thinking of using imagery as much as possible – arrows for next/back, tick/cross for OK/Cancel, that sort of thing
[23:18:09] knightr: jpabq, didn't somebody submit a ticket that could allow so "objects" to resize themselves (or something like that), I don't know what happened with it though...
[23:18:41] jpabq: knightr, I just tried Greek. Three lines is going to be necessary a LOT of places, with it, so...
[23:19:25] jpabq: stuartm, maintaining "balance" is a real problem, when you don't know how much room something is going to take.
[23:20:32] knightr: stuartm, that's a shame (about the Arabic translation)... If we could get more info on it (like where it's hosted) I could ask one of my colleagues at work to get me more info on it (he is Maroccan so he speaks Arabic, French and English...)
[23:21:39] knightr: s/Marrocan/Morrocan (Morocco is spelled Maroc in French..)
[23:23:45] knightr: jpabq, LOL, I wasn't expecting that it would be that bad in Greek though...
[23:24:19] stuartm: knightr: it was some time back now, I don't remember but sphery's megabrain (or supreme organisational skills) might retain the details
[23:26:57] jpabq: Ug. Greek is much worse than French, at least at the Menu level. Not only would I need three lines for the description of the menu item, looks like I would need three lines for the name of the menu item.
[23:27:05] knightr: stuartm, I google for Arabic and MythTV and I see that we got a patch from the OpenCraft company for an Arabic keyboard...
[23:27:49] jpabq: Greek is also much worse, because I don't have a clue what anything says. At least with French I can muddle through a bit.
[23:27:58] knightr: s/google/googled geez, looks like I need to take one more coffee...
[23:29:33] stuartm: knightr: www.open-craft.com – http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/4316
[23:29:36] jpabq: How many Greek users to we have? I am tempted to say, sorry, but there is a limit to what can be practically supported.
[23:29:56] knightr: jpabq, I could try to help you with Russian (I can read the characters and some words are pretty close to the English/French ones) but not Greel, sorry...
[23:30:25] stuartm: knightr: yeah, seems OpenCraft was one, I thought there was another though with a full fork (they were installing MythTV in some commercial setting somewhere)
[23:30:28] knightr: jpabq, I don't know, we'll only possibly know that when people submit their profile...
[23:31:45] stuartm: maybe that was OpenCraft, I just can't find the right emails/references
[23:32:16] knightr: s/Greel/Greek, I guess it's not coffee I need, it's sleep... :)
[23:32:56] stuartm: http://arabcrunch.com/2009/01/opencraft-to-launch-web-tv-20.html  – It was them then, and they are in Egypt
[23:34:33] stuartm: since they were using their own customised version, their translations won't line up exactly, and this was a few years ago so it's probably sufficiently different
[23:35:26] knightr: stuartm, I wonder why we never got any more contributions from them...
[23:36:03] knightr: (If only because the more they add to our code base, they less tweaks they need to maintain on their side...)
[23:37:02] knightr: Our interest in multimedia and culture has led us to undertake many exciting projects in this domain. From large bookseller sites to multimedia portals to hardware/software media appliances, we've covered a significant range of consumer scenarios and have built significant expertise in using the possibilities of the Internet medium to engage the audiences.
[23:37:26] knightr: ^ taken from their website...
[23:39:53] stuartm: knightr: well a lot of their original work was for the old UI, we stopped hearing from them when we switched to mythui, it could be that they stayed with the pre-0.21 code base because they had a lot of time invested in it – or that project was finished and they moved on to other things
[23:42:19] knightr: stuartm, yes, that would make sense especially if it does what they want it do do...
[23:45:48] knightr: jpabq, I could ask the Greek translator what theme they use if you are intrested... (I kinda wonder what they use myself...).
[23:48:16] jpabq: knightr, I was able to get Russian working. Leaves more space around the English than I would really like, but it does not look too bad.
[23:49:48] knightr: jpabq, cпасибо! :)
[23:50:15] jpabq: knightr, I have stretched it as far as I am willing to. There is still one menu that does not have quite enough room for the title in Greek, but....
[23:50:40] jpabq: I have not checked every window — just the menus.
[23:51:07] knightr: jpabq, you did your part, the translators will have to do the rest, thank you!
[23:52:01] knightr: (PS: Спасибо, pronounced Spaciba means "Thank you" in Russian...)
[23:52:12] jpabq: stuartm, It does not really cause any problem, but did you know that switching languages (mythfrontend --prompt) results in a segfault?
[23:52:20] jpabq: knightr, :-)
[23:53:06] stuartm: jpabq: no, that's new? It was working when I tested it just a week ago
[23:53:24] jpabq: stuartm, oh? It has done that to me for a lot longer than that.
[23:56:42] stuartm: hmm, I can reproduce
[23:57:01] stuartm: jpabq: mind opening a ticket, I'm just about to call it a night
[23:57:04] stuartm: ?
[23:58:13] jpabq: stuartm, sure.
