[16:07:57] iamlindoro: http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/8238
[16:08:10] ** iamlindoro wonders how an unthemed screen could be affected by the them **
[16:08:10] iamlindoro: e
[16:08:28] iamlindoro: broken qtlook?
[16:09:31] iamlindoro: hmm, nope, since its qtlook is the same as -wide's
[16:14:39] stuartm: not enough screen real-estate for them to be visible? Unlikely but what res are they using?
[16:14:55] iamlindoro: That's what I asked in the infoneeded :)
[16:14:58] iamlindoro: And it's my guess
[16:17:00] sphery: not-installed (Windows?) Qt theme, causing the theme to fall back to the desktop-defined theme, which may have poor representation of checkboxes?
[16:17:52] iamlindoro: A corner case one way or another
[16:18:10] iamlindoro: Works fine here at Acceptable Resolutions(tm)
[16:21:41] sphery: OK, guess it's called a Qt "Style", and we are using Windows. It's installed as part of a default Qt install, but I wouldn't be surprised if distros tear apart a default install to allow users to choose whether or not to install default components.
[16:21:57] sphery: (default Qt install including the Qt-GUI stuff)
[16:22:14] iamlindoro: Maybe I should just close it closed->NoSuchThingAsASkin
[16:33:21] sphery: In theory, though, if it's the Qt Style, it would affect all themes, equally, so the other ideas are more likely correct.

[22:14:41] ** iamlindoro screams **
[22:14:49] ** iamlindoro takes a deep breath **
[22:14:52] ** iamlindoro screams some more **
[22:16:03] iamlindoro: can. not. win.
[22:16:14] ** stuartm hauls iamlindoro off to join justinh_ at the Mental Asylum for Former Themers **
[22:17:01] iamlindoro: I suspect this is only the beginning of the onslaught
[22:17:17] iamlindoro: when it reaches general population, I'm liable to go truly insane
[22:18:11] iamlindoro: As nobody is really shy about personally e-mailing you about their issues with your theme-- unsubscribing from the users list was a step in the right direction, though
[22:18:22] wagnerrp: this is why we need animations, with some sort of idle timer
[22:18:36] wagnerrp: if they sit in the main menu for more than a minute
[22:18:44] wagnerrp: assuming theyre inching closer to the tv
[22:18:50] wagnerrp: trying to figure out what that image is
[22:19:08] wagnerrp: and then show a frightening image and blast the speaker
[22:19:25] iamlindoro: Or the ability to gradually blur the image to encourage quick thinking ;)
[22:20:51] iamlindoro: Very frustrating when, after months of working on the theme to make it consistent, attractive, complete, etc., people can't stomach the (user supply-able) background that I happen to like quite a lot
[22:21:12] iamlindoro: especially when the BGs were done in an hour, making them the teensiest part of the overall theme
[22:27:04] iamlindoro: paul-h, Re: Your message to -developers... should be okay to get that in post-release?
[22:27:12] iamlindoro: (unless you think it's an actual blocker)
[22:31:39] Beirdo: what's all this screaming about?
[22:33:02] wagnerrp: check #mythtv
[22:43:56] ** iamlindoro punches the wall and screams some more **
[22:43:59] iamlindoro: every
[22:44:01] iamlindoro: decision
[22:45:15] iamlindoro: So, to recap, users want a flashy UI that is actually just a readable list of text, that is animated, but takes up no CPU, with sophisticated new approaches that are updates of existing ten year old themes.
[22:45:23] iamlindoro: Any questions?
[22:46:06] stuartm: sounds simple
[22:50:15] iamlindoro: but don't worry, if you miss any of these helpful hints, they will happily e-mail and question you about any decision you may have made, however small, and however arbitrary ;)
[22:50:26] ** iamlindoro is not actually upset, just having a bit of fun ranting **
[22:51:30] grokky (grokky!~grokky@kalis.csse.unimelb.edu.au) has joined #mythtv-theming
[22:57:05] stuartm: iamlindoro: tonight's deadline is a hard one? I did want to get involved in voting, but I haven't given the themes sufficient review – I know I've had plenty of time and warning so I've only myself to blame
[22:57:39] iamlindoro: I am only keen to cut off user voting, dev voting can probably go on
[22:58:38] Beirdo: iamlindoro: yeah well... take the "suggestions" as you want, and then make your executive decision :) It's your theme
[23:00:04] Beirdo: and I kinda like it :)
[23:00:31] Beirdo: it's different... and different is good
[23:00:46] iamlindoro: Heh, I actually did mostly learn those lessons in writing Graphite
[23:00:51] iamlindoro: but I'm a whole lot more attached to Arclight
[23:01:01] iamlindoro: as I put about 10x as much work into it
[23:02:08] Beirdo: heh
[23:02:31] Beirdo: I must say, it does look kinda ... odd with no fanart having the top right so empty
[23:02:38] Beirdo: but I do see why it was done that way
[23:02:55] Beirdo: with fanart, it is nice to have some that pokes through
[23:02:57] iamlindoro: As mentioned elsewhere, it still looks good to me, but what do I know
[23:03:22] Beirdo: nah, I'm not complaining. odd as in different and unexpected at first
[23:03:32] Beirdo: but it certainly has its purpose
[23:04:01] iamlindoro: At this point in Graphite's development, I had already ditched it in favor of Arclight, which was only two or three screens
[23:04:09] iamlindoro: Whereas I show no signs of stopping use of Arclight
[23:04:17] iamlindoro: so I have at least on satisfied user ;)
[23:04:19] iamlindoro: er one
[23:05:10] Beirdo: hehe
[23:05:33] Beirdo: do you have an icon for SD shows, BTW?
[23:05:40] Beirdo: or is it just a lack of one?
[23:05:58] iamlindoro: There's no videoflag for standard def, so there's no statetype to be used for it
[23:06:04] Beirdo: gotcha
[23:06:09] iamlindoro: s/statetype/state/
[23:06:22] Beirdo: until the db changes for resolution, etc happen, there's no possible way
[23:06:30] Beirdo: so lack of icon :)
[23:06:33] Beirdo: fair enough
[23:07:21] iamlindoro: Well, adding a flag/state would be an easy affair, probably 2–3 lines of code, I just only cared about which HD resolutions they were when I wrote that stuff
[23:07:54] Beirdo: yah
[23:08:28] Beirdo: be cool to have MPEG-2 vs H.264 in there somehow too
[23:08:40] iamlindoro: There's already a videoflag for AVC
[23:08:42] Beirdo: again, may have to wait for the db changes
[23:08:44] iamlindoro: (H.264)
[23:09:12] iamlindoro: you would just need to expand where it gets set-- currently the only thing that can turn it on is ETI info in places that send it
[23:09:15] sphery: Beirdo: I thought that the 2fps slideshow you got when you played H.264 on the wrong system was enough of a flag.  :)
[23:09:17] iamlindoro: er EIT
[23:09:36] Beirdo: sphery: hehe :)
[23:09:58] Beirdo: but really, looks good
[23:10:49] Beirdo: I have to think of appropriate background fanart for my setup ;)
[23:11:14] Beirdo: what format does the background need to be? PNG, I assume?
[23:12:13] iamlindoro: anything Qt can live with
[23:12:37] iamlindoro: and doesn't need to be specifically referenced in Arclight, it's randomized from the Backgrounds directory
[23:12:56] Beirdo: cool
[23:13:05] iamlindoro: (though you *may* want to change the one reference in qtlook.txt, since that governs the BG in Qt settings screens)
[23:13:14] Beirdo: so if I get a few, it will kinda cycle through them
[23:13:18] iamlindoro: yep
[23:13:27] Beirdo: now that is cool
[23:14:01] Beirdo: the default blue pixelated is nice anyways.
[23:14:05] Beirdo: I'm a sucker for blue
[23:14:19] iamlindoro: We need a green theme
[23:14:28] iamlindoro: Arclight was supposed to be, just didn't really end up that way
[23:14:31] Beirdo: need a pink theme for WAF :)
[23:14:32] Beirdo: heh
[23:14:41] Beirdo: not that I care much about that anymore
[23:14:45] iamlindoro: Childish is pinkish
[23:14:48] Beirdo: make something girly
[23:14:54] Beirdo: heh, cool
[23:15:13] wagnerrp: never really liked green
[23:15:42] Beirdo: Hmm, I wonder how arclight would look with solid black background
[23:15:50] iamlindoro: goth
[23:16:03] Beirdo: heh, yeah, I guess
[23:16:12] wagnerrp: hey, just in time for the The Crow remake!
[23:16:30] Beirdo: it's flexible enough to use with many color schemes though
[23:16:54] iamlindoro: I suspect plain black would actually make it pretty hard to read
[23:17:06] iamlindoro: since much of the design is about darkening what's behind it
[23:17:15] iamlindoro: and black is tough to darken :)
[23:17:16] Beirdo: quite possibly. likely need a grey of some sorts
[23:17:54] Beirdo: but anyways... I will see what I can come up with to play with
[23:18:10] Beirdo: first I have to reinstall that machine and hope X unscrews itself
[23:18:23] Beirdo: stupid ubuntu + ATI
[23:19:00] Beirdo: and of course, I run letterboxed
[23:19:05] Beirdo: essentially
[23:19:30] Beirdo: widescreen on a SD CRT monitor :)
[23:19:45] wagnerrp: where did you ever find a SD monitor?
[23:20:01] Beirdo: ummm, it's an old POS Dell CRT?
[23:20:15] Beirdo: it's what I had :)
[23:20:32] Beirdo: I'll start rebuilding after the move.
[23:20:52] wagnerrp: last time ive seen a SD CRT was the 13" we for dos on our old XT
[23:21:14] Beirdo: I mean SD aspect ratio, not resolution :)
[23:21:26] Beirdo: heh
[23:21:28] wagnerrp: you mean full screen
[23:21:43] Beirdo: 4:3
[23:22:05] Beirdo: so I letterbox the theme, and it works pretty dang well

[23:23:39] Beirdo: for example
[23:25:23] Beirdo: OK, now I really need food. blargh. be back in a bit.
