[01:38:31] | cybrNaut: | mkbloke: it's terrestrial, and i have a motorized directional antenna. I could probably do better by putting it outside, but i'd have to get ambitious enough to climb on the roof and add holes |
[01:39:51] | cybrNaut: | it would help if I could tune the direction of it, but MythTV seems to only show the signal strength when the signal is gone |
[01:48:22] | mkbloke: | ah. maybe other command line tools to monitor the sig strength might help with fine tuning the exact direction? I imagine putting it outside would help, but I can understand the ball-ache of trying to do it yourself. |

[17:10:22] | cybrNaut: | i dug a bit more since I just had a stretch of poor reception. the db shows *.ts files for the bad recordings, but the files indeed do not exist. |

[19:50:10] | mkbloke: | that's progress, I guess... :) |
[20:04:39] | cybrNaut: | i think it's reasonable for MythTV to delete junk files, and also sensible to retain the recording metadata in the db, but the communication to the user is a disaster. |
[20:05:30] | cybrNaut: | the error msg implies to the user that something or someone other than MythTV deleted the media files. |
[20:06:33] | cybrNaut: | it's rude & inconvenient for MythTV to raise alarms about missing files |
[20:07:14] | cybrNaut: | the error msg should instead be worded this way: "the media for this recording was deleted by MythTV because the quality was too low to keep the file"" |
[20:08:50] | cybrNaut: | it should be made clear to the user that the file is /deliberately/ gone |

[20:48:32] | mkbloke: | cybrNaut: it's been a long time since I last had a damaged recording, so I don't know if that's actually the case. have you verified it to be so? as I said above, if the recording never started successfully in the first place then there will be no .ts file, but I don't think (from bad memory at least), that recordings marked as damaged are subsequently deleted... |
[20:55:51] | cybrNaut: | mkbloke: i know for certain that not all "damaged" recordings are deleted. More than half of my recordings are marked as damaged and many of them play just fine. |
[20:57:59] | cybrNaut: | the db also keeps a record of the filesize. most of the deleted files have a filesize of zero in the db, but not all. a few of the deleted files show a tiny filesize of ranging from 0 to 9mb. |
[20:59:37] | mkbloke: | interesting... |
[20:59:50] | cybrNaut: | apparently MythTV has 3 standards of quality: non-damaged, damaged but worthy of keeping, & damaged to the point of absolute uselessness |
[21:04:07] | cybrNaut: | i think it's reasonable to have 3 standards of quality, but it's a bummer that the poorest quality recordings don't get a different label, like "unusable", and it's a shame the error msg doesn't inform the user well. |
