[22:21:03] wookey: I have a drive from a backend machine that died. It's now in the new machine. I want to use the mythconverg database in the new machine, but it seems that just copying over the /var/lib/mysql/mythconverg directory doesn't work (I get 'table doesn't exist when using lock tables') when I try to do anything beyond 'show tables;')
[22:21:33] wookey: So what is the right way to transfer an old database over?
[22:22:02] wookey: SO far as I can see mysqldump only works on the running database, not just a set of files?
[22:24:21] wookey: I gues there is metadata about 'mythconverg' database in other /var/lib/mysql files so one has to copy the whole lot together, or use some kind of transfer tool because binary formats vary between machines?
[22:30:09] RokLobsta: was there a mythbackup from the day the machine died?
[22:30:25] RokLobsta: there should have been a cron job running that did that daily
[22:30:36] RokLobsta: it's easy to restore from that.
[22:30:49] wookey: RokLobsta: ooh. where does that get stored? (debian box)
[22:31:00] RokLobsta: https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Database_Backup_and_Restore
[22:31:28] RokLobsta: based off your mythtv home paths
[22:32:44] mkbloke: On Debian (via package) it could be /var/backups
[22:36:03] wookey: OK. I have lots of files like mythconverg-1344–20200809064746.sql in the old /home/mythtv/mythtv/db_backups
[22:36:12] markk_ (markk_!~mark@host109-151-70-157.range109-151.btcentralplus.com) has quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
[22:36:17] wookey: but they are only 800 bytes long
[22:37:01] wookey: looks like I have them once/week for about 4 years
[22:37:36] RokLobsta: oh
[22:37:54] RokLobsta: what sound does a wookey make when something has gone wrong?
[22:38:08] wookey: looks like it's been runing some kind of script but not actually backing up anything very useful....
[22:38:22] RokLobsta: that doesn't seem right. it should be quite large
[22:38:37] wookey: that's what I thought. Bum.
[22:38:59] RokLobsta: silently failing.
[22:39:05] RokLobsta: anything in the logs?
[22:52:05] wookey: OK, nothing in /var/log/mysql/* or /var/log/mythtv*, but /var/spool/mail has cron mail about mythtv-weekly.
[22:52:24] wookey: Looks like it's been sending mail for several years saying: mythconverg.oldprogram
[22:52:27] wookey: warning  : Table is marked as crashed and last repair failed
[22:52:45] wookey: but that machine wasn't delivering those mails
[22:53:20] wookey: and mythtv was working fine...
[22:53:47] wookey: So. given no valid backups is there a plan B?
[22:54:02] wookey: The old machine is not totally dead – it just dies after a few hours
[22:54:21] wookey: So I guess I could put the drive back in and runa database backup there.
[22:55:01] wookey: What does mythconverg.oldprogram do?
[22:55:23] RokLobsta: yeah sorry, you'll have to ask someone else about fiddling with a mysql database file that way
[22:56:18] wookey: OK. we'll you've been very helpful so far. I had no idea there was a weekly backup script (no doubt intended to help with exactly this sort of thing :-)
[22:56:45] RokLobsta: Yeah, well, you'll be sorted for it when you get this going again.
[22:56:53] wookey: Do you understand about the port 6453 and port 3306 stuff?
[22:56:55] RokLobsta: is it a big deal to kiss it goodbye?
[22:57:07] RokLobsta: i know nussink!
[22:57:08] wookey: No. I can just start again if need be
[22:57:32] wookey: but having the list of 'things already recorded' is good to preserve
[22:58:29] wookey: So, just going back to having a bare install with a fresh, empty database. I'm having no-end of trouble getting the backend visible to the frontend.
[22:59:19] wookey: I must be doing something very stupid, because I've done this many times, but it's just not playing and I don't really know how to debug
[23:00:48] RokLobsta: once youget it going there are some other scipts to check the health and repair the database too.
[23:01:02] mkbloke: If you have a few hours on the old box, just fire it up and mysqldump mythconverg. It won't take long.
[23:02:32] wookey: mkbloke: transferring drives and getting serial working on the old box is a bit of a pain, but yes I guess I should do that.
[23:02:33] RokLobsta: this is also a good thing to run once in while to clean up any dags. https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Find_orphans.py
[23:04:39] mkbloke: If the gain is worth the effort, but yes, understood if it's more compilcated than just chucking the original drive back in it...
[23:04:47] wookey: So I'm confused about the port settings in mythv-setup on the backend, and config.xml on the backend and on the frontend. Which ones need to match up (default to 3306?) and when to use hostname rather than ip address.
[23:09:12] mkbloke: MySQL defaults to listening on 3306. You should have 3306 in the DB section of config.xml. Assuming the DB is on the same host as the BE, the config.xml can point to localhost or 127.0.0.1. For remote FEs, I believe the host or IP should point to the machine and/or BE that the DB resides on.
[23:10:19] wookey: OK, so port 6543 is what mythtv listens on and 3306 is what mysql listens on?
[23:10:52] wookey: and yes I have BE and mariaDB on one box, FE on another
[23:11:27] mkbloke: yes, that's it
[23:12:59] wookey: and the frontend talks to mysql, not the BE (this was the bit I had failed to grok)
[23:13:06] mkbloke: if you were to use a hostname that resolves to the LAN IP of the BE system in config.xml, you should be able to copy that across systems without having to change it in between
[23:13:43] mkbloke: I *think* it talks to both...
[23:23:20] wookey: thanks for you help. I'll poke some more and come back if I'm still stuck
