[17:06:25] GWG: I have sort of a loaded question for people in here. I was telling someone recently I was upgrading my MythTV install to 0.31 and the response was, "People still use that?" I was wondering...why do people like MythTV? I haven't really thought critically about the question in a long time, as I've been using it for so many years.
[17:09:45] mengoshmink: I haven't used much else but for 1. I prefer the interface over Kodi, 2. I prefer the way it scrapes metadata, 3. I prefer the way it sorts my media, 4. I prefer how it integrates TV/PVR/Video collection, 5. I prefer it's client server model with SQL
[17:10:37] mengoshmink: All that said I am having problems with my installation at the moment, but maybe it's me
[17:11:28] GWG: mengoshmink: Neither have I. I'm not thinking of switching at the moment. I got a bit frustrated when I was away for 2 months and needed to watch things remotely, but for in home viewing, I'm happy with it as a DVR. I don't use the music functionality much
[17:13:23] GWG: I always feel like I don't do enough with my setup though.
[17:13:54] GWG: I should do transcoding and such for storage purposes. It just seems easier to just watch and delete.
[17:13:56] mengoshmink: I mostly use for home viewing, for remote I use Emby or I was using
[17:13:58] mengoshmink: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id . . . lle.mythling
[17:14:37] mengoshmink: I used to use for transcoding but I do that separately now
[17:14:50] GWG: For now, most people aren't going anywhere
[17:14:58] GWG: Good opportunity to update the home setup(software wise)
[17:15:04] mengoshmink: I used for games for a while
[17:15:33] mengoshmink: What distros do you use server/client?
[17:16:51] GWG: I'm a long time Fedora user
[17:17:07] mengoshmink: I am trying to make my own docker image using Fedora to keep up with my desktop client
[17:17:16] mengoshmink: Me too! :-D
[17:17:29] mengoshmink: Centos on server though
[17:17:36] GWG: I've had distributed backend and frontend in the past, but I live in a one-bedroom, and I decided to stop watching TV in bed, so I reworked to a single dual backend/frontend.
[17:18:01] GWG: Which could use more to do, as it is my old desktop system, and has more than enough power if I did more commercial flagging and transcoding
[17:18:15] mengoshmink: I have a NAS which I want to use for SQL and recordings
[17:18:39] GWG: My NAS only stores long-term video.
[17:18:51] GWG: The MythTV backend has a recordings drive in it locally.
[17:18:59] GWG: Anything I want to keep gets moved to video storage on the NAS
[17:19:06] GWG: I have yet to automate that.
[17:19:10] GWG: I should with jobs.
[17:19:11] GWG: Another project
[17:19:25] mengoshmink: :-)
[17:19:39] GWG: I started a project of ripping my physical media.
[17:19:47] GWG: Which I've put off because it is a chore.
[17:19:52] GWG: I've been working on that.
[17:20:02] GWG: Insert disc, click
[17:20:04] GWG: Repeat
[17:20:08] GWG: Figure out which track is which
[17:20:19] GWG: Encode into a smaller container.
[17:20:23] GWG: Transfer
[17:20:42] mengoshmink: I just do mine gradually 2 a month but lots to do
[17:21:05] mack-: I like MythTV because scheduling and commflagging work well. I don't really care for the frontend for watching, and historically has been too resource intensive, so been using kodi for frontend for years. Only use a frontend for commflagging correction and user job submission.
[17:21:55] GWG: I'd be happier with the frontend if someone could convince the Harmony to support the network Mythfrontend API. Remote control of a MythTV frontend always annoys me
[17:22:06] mengoshmink: Yah, scheduling is nice, commflagging wasn't my thig recently
[17:22:22] GWG: The version 1 FLIRC I have sticks out unpleasantly
[17:22:51] GWG: I am happy with scheduling. Although I have a few problems I have to address. I just moved everything from Data Direct to XMLTV.
[17:23:01] GWG: Due the deprecation.
[17:23:20] GWG: I didn't realize until the changelog I could have been getting better data if I'd done it before
[17:24:03] mengoshmink: I have a Trulink remote which I have always liked wth the Myth FE, getting a FLIRC for my RPi though
[17:24:21] GWG: Part of the reason I asked the question is..I feel like I get inspired to make improvements talking to people.
[17:24:37] GWG: I think I haven't heard much MythTV discussion since the MythTV Oggcast went off in 2012–2013
[17:25:28] mengoshmink: I don't know many linux users so the discussion I usually have is with myself
[17:28:17] mack-: sitting here waiting for UPS to deliver a new drive to replace one of my recording disks. Lost some recordings I hadn't watched yet. >.<
[17:29:02] mengoshmink: I know it's not a backup but I use RAID
[17:29:17] GWG: I use RAID for my NAS storage. I only have a single recording drive.
[17:29:24] GWG: I should fix that one of these days, as if it dies...
[17:29:30] mengoshmink: AH
[17:29:43] mengoshmink: Always lots to do
[17:29:50] mack-: actually, I didn't even check the disk this time. The motherboard I have is old and SATA ports have started crapping out. Maybe that's all it is this time. Will find out when I power down
[17:30:46] mengoshmink: Time for an upgrade ...
[17:31:05] mack-: I didn't really want to use RAID for "temporary" files on underpowered hardware.
[17:31:53] mengoshmink: I was once told, everything is temporary
[17:32:08] mack-: Yeah, I had an upgrade all lined up, and then another more pressing need arose for the hardware, lol
[17:32:16] mengoshmink: so I have a _temp folder which is huge
[17:35:56] GWG: What were you planning to upgrade to?
[17:36:52] mengoshmink: MythTV 31 but I'm struggling with mariadb on my synology
[17:38:29] mack-: my upgrade was just an older desktop class machine, but newer than the current one.
[17:41:03] mengoshmink: Food is ready, back in a bit
[17:41:18] mack-: the current one is getting a little embarrassing, but it's been a workhorse. It's Athlon Rana-based.
[17:42:29] GWG: My former desktop gets turned into my next backend usually
[17:43:57] mack-: same, but the last couple of upgrades have had to go to new places.
