[20:03:38] psymin: Do you have a device that you'll use as a frontend?
[20:04:30] SirScott: psymin: yes, i have a couple of odroid N2s running core elec
[20:04:55] SirScott: ok, just found an sd card, so downloading raspbian and getting that going
[20:07:44] SirScott: psymin: step #6 here: https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Raspberry_Pi, is it required to purchase the license key?
[20:07:44] ** MythLogBot https://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/6 **
[20:08:12] SirScott: funny bot.
[20:08:53] SirScott: oh just realized that was in a frontend section.
[20:11:05] SirScott: psymin: that script is pretty nice! i do have a mysql / mariadb server running in the network, would it be better to just have it use that existing server?
[20:13:09] psymin: if your network is reliable it might be best to use an offsite server :)
[20:13:15] psymin: err a non-local one
[20:25:31] SirScott: psymin: alright, chugging through the mythtv-light install, then i'll run that script
[20:26:43] psymin: for me, running mythtv-setup was quite frustrating due to CEC :) It would turn off my TV upon exit.
[20:26:46] psymin: mythtv-setup -O libCECEnabled=0
[20:27:17] SirScott: that is annoying! :)
[20:27:27] psymin: Those flags will prevent that.
[20:27:49] SirScott: mine's not connected to a tv, so that'll help too!
[20:30:19] psymin: If you're hoping to tune into IPTV, my impression is that tvheadend might be better on that front. I haven't tried it though. Only on Mythtv.
[20:30:36] SirScott: once the mythtv-backend is installed, how do i go about configuring it to use my USB tuner and setting the channels?
[20:30:49] SirScott: no plans for IPTV, just live OTA
[20:31:11] psymin: once it is installed, then you run mythtv-setup
[20:31:32] SirScott: is that a GUI app or CLI?
[20:31:39] psymin: Unfortunately, it is a gui app.
[20:31:46] SirScott: oh dang.
[20:31:53] psymin: I wish there were cli tools. If there are I'd love to know about them :)
[20:32:06] psymin: There is a web interface, and a mythweb interface.
[20:32:57] psymin: there are some config files you can edit in ~/.mythtv and in /etc/mythtv
[20:33:22] psymin: Might be easiest to use on a pi if you install the vnc service.
[20:34:07] SirScott: yep, going to have to cross that bridge when i get there. only 70% done installing mythtv-light.
[20:34:22] simonpatapon: you can ssh -X from a unix machine to get mythtv-setup relayed to your current Xorg
[20:34:54] SirScott: simonpatapon: i installed buster-lite, which i wouldn't think has an xserver?
[20:35:20] SirScott: i mean, granted i could install one... just sort of defeats the purpose of a headless backend machine.
[20:36:29] simonpatapon: i think you wont have choice to apt install xorg
[20:36:32] simonpatapon: or edit by hand
[20:36:45] simonpatapon: but xorg only with no DE is still light
[20:37:08] psymin: I'm not sure if X is required to be running other than for setup.
[20:39:10] psymin: It is definitely worth installing X though, at least for setup.
[20:39:40] simonpatapon: you could still call it headless
[20:42:48] psymin: If someone made a cli or curses version of mythtv-setup I'd use it :) and tip.
[20:46:49] mack-: I think the general rumblings was for a webfrontend setup replacement. Very back burner, since stuff works.
[20:48:56] mack-: btw, I still haven't found anyone who can tell me how well a Pi can handle concurrent recordings and LiveTV sessions. And I wouldn't expect any sort of transcode jobs to be satisfactory, unless I wanted to start a fire with a Pi4 :-)
[20:49:18] mack-: (just joking about that, of course)
[20:49:37] psymin: It seems to work fine with one livetv stream :)
[20:50:30] psymin: I've got another 950Q USB to connect so I'll do that "eventually". After this other project I guess.
[20:50:33] mack-: yeah, I think a lot of the people putting backends for kodi on Pis are just doing one stream.
[20:50:49] SirScott: that's me :)
[20:51:51] psymin: I had a bit of trouble at first getting the backend and kodi-pvr-mythtv to talk nicely to each other for livetv.
[20:53:43] mack-: pvr.mythtv was almost plug and play for me, but I had mythtv configured and working with frontends before a kodi install.
[20:54:00] ** psymin nods. **
[20:54:11] psymin: I had backend misconfigured. Localhost set in too many places.
[20:56:57] SirScott: maybe i should have run mythtv-setup before kicking off this backend install script...
[20:57:38] psymin: the script wants you to have set up mythtv-lite (light?)
[20:57:49] psymin: https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MythTV_Light
[20:57:54] SirScott: it just looks for mythtv-light to have been installed
[20:58:04] psymin: okayh
[21:03:28] SirScott: 'Finished setting up for mythtv-backend – Please reboot'  – progress!
[21:03:56] SirScott: maybe i won't need to run mythtv-setup until i get my USB tuner
[21:04:42] psymin: It won't have any content to serve w/o the tuner :)
[21:06:47] SirScott: if i run setup now and don't have the tuner, can I re-run it again later when I do?
[21:07:12] simonpatapon: but youd be glad to be able to run it when you<ll get it
[21:07:30] psymin: yep
[21:07:47] simonpatapon: configure sshd_config to allo Xforward, install xorg and test it
[21:08:13] SirScott: ah thanks, had forgotten about the sshd_config
[21:08:57] SirScott: looks like it's set to yes by default in raspbian
[21:09:02] simonpatapon: i juste trough the same problems while i re-installed in a VM
[21:09:16] simonpatapon: sorry for my poor english

[21:27:02] psymin: if you set up an iptv stream you could tinker with it before you get the USB device :)
[21:27:24] SirScott: got suggestions for one to try?
[21:27:28] psymin: no :(
[21:31:12] SirScott: well, with everything installed and simply idling, the pi is not on fire, so that's good.
[21:31:55] psymin: I wonder what would be a good system resource monitor/log tool for an rpi3 in this case.
[21:33:13] psymin: I'm hoping there is a mpegts stream of something like QVC that is free and legal to use as an example.
[21:33:35] psymin: maybe cspan?
[21:34:06] SirScott: or pbs
[21:35:32] SirScott: i am a current youtube tv subscriber...could i add that in perhaps?
[21:36:26] psymin: I think it has to be mpeg-ts
[21:36:31] psymin: not sure what other requirements

[21:41:16] psymin: Freeiptv_m3u.py looks handy
[21:42:44] psymin: ahh, that could be a handy test, yes
[21:50:10] SirScott: psymin, simonpatapon — thanks again for all of the help. i gotta take off, but should be getting the tuner in a couple of days, so may be back if I can't figure that out!
[21:50:30] psymin: neat, I hope to hear back when you get the device :)
