[13:35:59] KungFuJesus: peterbennett: Right but what I'm asking is, the typical mpeg2 video found in a ATSC transport, does it contain the "timestamps" that are being referring to for AVSync2?

[13:36:32] KungFuJesus: I'm not sure what that means

[17:46:51] peterbennett: KungFuJesus: yes – the only common video files that do not contain timestamps are AVI files. TS, MPG, MKV etc do include them.
[17:48:28] KungFuJesus: Ok that's a little bit more clear. I have a broadcaster in this area that often will air content that needs audio delayed by as much as 60ms. I just assumed it was something wrong on their end, would AVSync2 perhaps fix this issue?
[17:49:44] KungFuJesus: This same broadcaster also seems to be putting video in the stream that has shimmery compression artifacts – this is something I hadn't seen OTA before
[18:04:58] peterbennett: I don't know if AVSYNC2 will fix it, probably not.
[18:05:22] KungFuJesus: it would seem, at least, that MythTV's avsync behavior is novel to anything done in ffmpeg. I haven't look at the broadcast on a simple, built in tuner on a TV to see if it exists there. Is it possible that the fixed function decoders in devices do something like this?
[18:06:18] peterbennett: Are you asking about the 60ms out of sync or the shimmering?
[18:06:26] KungFuJesus: the sync issue
[18:07:03] KungFuJesus: the shimmering artifacts I mentioned more to shed light on whoever is mixing the stream possibly just doesn't know what they're doing
[18:07:38] peterbennett: There is another new setting in advanced to increase audio buffering that may help
[18:08:24] KungFuJesus: peterbennett: that setting sounds like an older one that I've had enabled for years. What's the difference with this one?
[18:09:35] peterbennett: Audio read ahead now has a setting where you can select an actula value, before you copuld just select on or off
[18:09:41] KungFuJesus: I should mention that I'm doing hardware decoding of the audio over HDMI to an audio receiver. Does that nullify any potential benefit of AVSync2?
[18:09:51] peterbennett: excuse my typing
[18:10:11] KungFuJesus: but the sync issues are usually very specific to just one broadcaster
[18:10:15] KungFuJesus: at certain times of day
[18:11:03] peterbennett: I suggest you take on of the out of sync recordings and play it with videolan or another generic player and see if you have the same issue
[18:11:17] KungFuJesus: I have and I do
[18:11:23] peterbennett: That will tell if it is mythtv or the recording at fault
[18:11:41] peterbennett: OK so it is likely the broadcaster at fault
[18:12:20] KungFuJesus: sure, I was just maybe hoping that after upgrading to 30 I can have this issue magically go away if they somehow have proper timestamps in the video stream that can be used to correct this
[18:12:54] KungFuJesus: but I get the impression maybe none of this matters if I had hardware video decoding and pass the raw Dolby Digital stream to an AV receiver, anyway?
[18:13:06] peterbennett: No the timestamps have been there ever since digital TV started and myth always used them
[18:13:58] KungFuJesus: The difference being that mythtv is now using high resolution timers to adjust the audio sync?
[18:14:28] peterbennett: Expert viewers say that the threshiold for detecting sync issues with normal ears is -125ms to +45ms , so probably most people will never notice it if it is off by 60ms.
[18:15:11] KungFuJesus: well then perhaps it's way more delayed and I'm just adjusting it to the point where I can't observe it, anymore
[18:15:26] peterbennett: AVSync2 uses the timestamp on every frame to adjust to the timestamp on the audio
[18:15:48] KungFuJesus: somewhere between 60–80ms seems to be where the lips sync with the dialog but I never tried cranking much higher
[18:15:53] peterbennett: The original AVSYNC assumed a fixed frame rate and stuck to that.
[18:16:31] KungFuJesus: interesting, so this method can possible account for variable framerates or framedrops as well
[18:16:34] peterbennett: AVSYNC2 shows each frame at the assigned tiome whereas original avsync used a fixed frame rate.
[18:16:35] KungFuJesus: possibly*
[18:16:50] peterbennett: Yes the idea is to support variable frame rates
[18:17:15] KungFuJesus: 99% of my content is constant frame rate, but that's good to know
[18:18:03] KungFuJesus: Does this have any affect with hardware decoding with an AVR?
[18:18:16] peterbennett: In some cases AVSYNC drops frames where AVSYNC2 does not.
[18:18:45] peterbennett: What is AVR?
[18:18:54] KungFuJesus: Audio / Video Receiver
[18:18:59] peterbennett: Oh you mean a receiver
[18:19:02] KungFuJesus: yeah
[18:19:31] peterbennett: That should work the same although there may be delays in the receiver
[18:19:37] KungFuJesus: since the audio decoding is done on there, but you could potentially influence that by delaying packets to it?
[18:20:17] KungFuJesus: yeah, there's a setting to do it, I've never needed it, though. It's mostly for latency in post processing on the TV
[18:20:34] peterbennett: The linux audio drivers give feedback to teh application as to how much is buffered, but that is an estimate and could be wrong
[18:21:14] KungFuJesus: interesting, after the update I may play around with this, then. I don't expect it to fix my issue, but it may fix other issues that I didn't actually know i had
[18:21:50] peterbennett: The main issues that are helped are jittery playback, dropped frames and such like.
[18:22:25] KungFuJesus: I do get the occassional jitter when playing back from a recorded show
[18:22:41] KungFuJesus: I always assumed it was IO related stutter but perhaps not
[18:23:15] KungFuJesus: there's also the live TV transition between shows jitter, is that helped in 30?
[18:23:34] peterbennett: Try increasing the Audio Read Ahead value, it defauls to around 100 but I use 400, you can set it up to around 2000 if necessary
[18:23:51] KungFuJesus: will do, I'm excited to try it out
[18:24:39] peterbennett: Some channels have the audio lagging the video then you get stuttering, increasing audio read ahead fixes that
