[03:45:23] | sutula: | I have a *really* old (0.24.2) mythtv backend that desperately needs an upgrade. It's old and crufty enough that I'd rather not trust trying to go through a sequential set of DB upgrades, but I don't want to lose the thousands (literally) of recordings. I'm thinking of a fresh install on a different machine, then trying to import my existing recordings. Any advice? Bad idea? Other ideas? |
[03:48:49] | sutula: | I'd be happy retaining only the recordings themselves and don't care about (and would prefer to lose, in fact) any info about deleted recordings, watched recordings, etc. It would be a PITA to have to rescan for commercials, but I'm not opposed to doing so if I can have it automatically done for me for all the recordings. (Little effort put into tuning commercial skips so far.) |

[04:09:32] | Hydr0p0nX: | sutula: make sure you have a good back up and the upgrade should work |
[04:11:46] | Hydr0p0nX: | According to https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Release_Notes_-_2 . . . Instructions , .24 -> 29 should be a direct upgrade |
[04:13:20] | sutula: | I *think* it's more difficult than that...In order to go to a newer myth, I need to go to a newer (in my case) Debian so I would need to do like 3 serial OS upgrades. I have little faith in that all working reasonably, though it might. |
[04:13:37] | Hydr0p0nX: | in that case .... |
[04:14:00] | Hydr0p0nX: | backup the database |
[04:15:18] | Hydr0p0nX: | rsync your storage director(y|ies) to the new machine, making sure the paths are the same |
[04:15:34] | Hydr0p0nX: | restore back up to new mysql install |
[04:21:12] | Hydr0p0nX: | once that's done, you should be ready to start myth and let it do the db upgrade |
[04:22:52] | sutula: | Will myth automatically do the upgrade, or is that some sort of script that needs to be kicked off? |
[04:23:13] | Hydr0p0nX: | will do it automatically |
[04:23:42] | Hydr0p0nX: | can't remember if it's when you launch the frontend or when you run myth-setup |
[04:25:12] | Kwisher: | pretty sure it's the b/e setup |
[04:25:15] | sutula: | I guess with several backups in place, I can try it in stages. |
[04:25:51] | sutula: | Fresh install, overwrite with old DB, then run myth-setup, basically |
[04:26:42] | Hydr0p0nX: | yep |
[04:27:24] | Kwisher: | i like this backup/restore script: https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Database_Backup_and_Restore |
[04:28:44] | sutula: | Are there good ways to eliminate the cruft, like how it remembers don't re-record stuff I've deleted? |
[04:30:23] | R_ is now known as [R] | |
[04:31:29] | Hydr0p0nX: | most of that is in the database if i'm not mistaken |
[04:31:49] | Kwisher: | do you use mythweb? |
[04:35:45] | Hydr0p0nX: | I do, although you probably weren't asking me :) |
[04:36:37] | Kwisher: | lol, correct |
[04:38:43] | Kwisher: | sutula: do you use mythweb? |
[04:39:03] | sutula: | Sorry...juggling...yes |
[04:39:29] | sutula: | The 0.24 version doesn't have all the features to clear that stuff, but maybe the .26 does? |
[04:40:01] | Hydr0p0nX: | any reason not to just go to .29 ? |
[04:40:10] | Hydr0p0nX: | errr, 29 |
[04:40:17] | Kwisher: | there are some db tools in mythweb, can't remember if .24 does |

[04:52:31] | sutula: | Oh, sorry...I meant .29 |
[04:53:02] | sutula: | Anyway, thanks much, Hydr0p0nX and Kwisher! |
[04:53:29] | sutula: | Will spend the rest of my down time this week setting up another system :) |
[04:54:54] | Kwisher: | how old is your debian install? |
[05:15:31] | Kwisher: | sutula: how old is your debian install? |
[05:24:24] | sutula: | Ummm...looking |
[05:25:09] | sutula: | It's Squeeze |
[05:26:05] | sutula: | Actually a testimony to stability of Debian releases once they finally get released :-/ |
[05:26:52] | sutula: | The backend is it's own machine, don't use it for anything else, and inside firewall, so really hasn't been a reason to update it except that I'm probably missing a bunch of new features. |
[05:27:06] | Kwisher: | i'd try the inplace upgrades one release at a time after making proper backups |
[05:27:21] | Kwisher: | might surprise you |
[05:27:32] | sutula: | Main pressure to update comes from frontends that may want to be on newer OS versions, and hard to get older frontend code any more. |
[05:28:28] | sutula: | Kwisher: One reason for a different install is that there'd be essentially no down time, but you have a good point too. |
[05:29:17] | sutula: | I can't back up the recordings, but can set aside those raid volumes. |
[05:30:04] | Kwisher: | but then again, might be more work repairing broken stuff vs a new install ?? |
[05:31:15] | sutula: | It's a ridiculously big set of recordings, 26T used out of 47T available. |
[05:31:29] | Kwisher: | holy crap |
[05:31:44] | sutula: | ...but those don't need to be messed with...just unmounted re-mounted on the new system |
[05:33:47] | sutula: | I got into myth over 10 years ago as a way to record satellite home-school content that I'd paid for, rather than using VHS tapes. So some of the recordings are reasonably valuable to me financially. But then, the family added a lot of movies and serials that they still enjoy, and now the grandkids are making use of it all. |
[05:34:32] | sutula: | Anyway...been an outstanding tool, but really needs a refresh and refreshing something that big gets harder. |
[05:39:49] | Kwisher: | good luck, i'd be interested in how you make out with the upgrade |
