[11:05:25] sphery: Bray90820: Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. You have a ~aaron/.mythtv/config.xml , but whatever you're using to start mythbackend is not setting HOME or is setting it to something else, so either there is no HOME (and, thus, no $HOME/.mythtv/config.xml) or the HOME is a location without a .mythtv/config.xml.
[11:06:01] sphery: So when you're logged in to a terminal (and, thus, have HOME=/home/aaron set), mythbackend/mythfrontend work.
[11:07:22] sphery: When your system (sysvinit, upstart, whatever) runs the mythbackend start script, there is no HOME (because no one logged in) or it's set wrong.
[11:08:16] sphery: So, you just need to either specify HOME=<whatever> in the actual script or you need to put a valid .mythtv/config.xml in whatever HOME the script specifies.

[19:44:04] Bray90820: ctmjr: You mean on top of my current ubuntu install?
[19:48:05] ctmjr: start over with mythbuntu, mysql does not let systemd know when it start's so systemd tries to start mythbackend. Mythbackend starts does not see mysql then quits.
[19:49:07] ctmjr: that is why you can start it from the command line everything is up and running
[19:50:45] Bray90820: ctmjr: Were you talking about me using mythbuntu based on 15.04
[19:51:56] ctmjr: you can edit the mythbackend service file to have systemd keep trying to resart mythbackend, but it will delay your boot time

That matches what I've read about the Ubuntu change to systemd.
[19:55:58] ctmjr: because mysql does not inform systemd it has started so it just starts mythbackend which tries once then gives up

[22:34:07] tgm4883: would it be mythbackend or mythtv-backend?
[22:35:12] Bray90820: mythbackend is usually the command to start the backend
[22:35:21] bill6502: tgm4883: It says to use the "$unit", so I assume it's the name of the .service file
[22:36:18] bill6502: Bray90820: try a known failure: sudo journalctl -u blahblahblah
[22:37:00] Bray90820: What do you mean
[22:37:51] bill6502: type exactly that, it should fail. see if the output is the same as -u mythbackend
[22:38:19] bill6502: or if it generates an error message like: no such service
[22:39:55] Bray90820: bill6502: same as -u mythbackend
[22:40:14] tgm4883: bill6502: isn't the service file named mythtv-backend.service?
[22:40:21] tgm4883: https://github.com/MythTV/packaging/blob/mast . . . kend.service
[22:41:47] Bray90820: tgm4883: You are correct
[22:41:53] Tobbe5178 (Tobbe5178!~asdf@2001:2002:51e1:d8ee:1d89:3562:4bb1:5387) has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[22:42:10] tgm4883: so then it should be 'sudo journalctl -u mythtv-backend'
[22:43:11] Bray90820: That's empty as well
[22:45:21] jarnos_ (jarnos_!~jarnos@a88-113-174-182.elisa-laajakaista.fi) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[22:46:00] bill6502: Bray90820: OK, just reading the man page. You'll get the entire log (for all services) with sudo journalctl could be huge, but see if there's anything myth in it
[22:46:51] Bray90820: It's actually really small
[22:46:57] Bray90820: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/a5d2ab794999b76aa792
[22:49:18] bill6502: does /var/log/syslog still exist (and have anything about the backend in it?)

[22:52:35] bill6502: wait a sec, when this discussion started the .service file was: /etc/systemd/system/mythbackend.service but tgm4883 just spotted mythtv-backend. Bray90820 what's the output of
[22:52:46] bill6502: ls -l /etc/systemd/system/myth*
[22:53:37] Bray90820: bill6502: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/a5551195116f3bc8cad7
[22:54:48] bill6502: That looks OK (was worried that there were 2)
[22:58:32] ctmjr: Bray90820: does anything else fail to start or just mythbackend?
[22:59:04] Bray90820: ctmjr: teamviewer also fails to start on boot
[22:59:13] ** ctmjr starts to shoot into the dark **
[22:59:45] bill6502: Bray90820: try this tool: sudo systemd-analyze verify /etc/systemd/system/mythtv-backend.service
[23:00:32] bill6502: ctmjr: me too, just down to reading man pages and googling

[23:00:59] Bray90820: I am thinking I should downgrade
[23:01:49] bill6502: OK, but like ctmjr said a while ago, please paste /etc/systemd/system/mythtv-backend.service
[23:02:12] bill6502: the last paste said there's an error in it

[23:09:10] bill6502: dev-mapper-server\x2ddata.device looks wrong, but I have no idea where to find it. It's not the the mythtv-backend.service
[23:09:57] bill6502: Bray90820: Sorry, but I'm out. I don't have systemd, so I just researching and coming up empty.
[23:10:09] ctmjr: that's odd i get the same error [/etc/systemd/system/mythtv-backend.service:79] Failed to parse service restart specifier, ignoring: 10s, our files are the same but mine starts mythbackend everytime. unless something got messed up with all your trouble shooting i have no idea
[23:10:40] Bray90820: So should I just downgrade
[23:12:41] bill6502: ctmjr: did you get the same "dev-mapper-server\x2ddata.device" error?
[23:13:32] ctmjr: bill6502: no that is the only error i get
[23:17:11] Bray90820: Would you all agree that I should downgrade at this point?
[23:18:08] bill6502: Bray90820: it' s up to you, clearly the analyze shows an error, I just don't know how to fix it.
[23:19:01] bill6502: ctmjr: how bout doing a: locate dev-mapper
[23:20:05] Bray90820: bill6502: That returns a blank line
[23:20:14] ctmjr: same here
[23:20:54] bill6502: googling for dev-mapper...
[23:24:35] bill6502: nada
[23:26:31] Bray90820: Yea I'm just gonna downgrade
[23:27:14] bill6502: Good luck.
[23:27:36] Bray90820: Watch I'll have the same error after the downgrade
[23:28:08] ctmjr: i would do a fresh install downgrades never go well for me
[23:28:33] Bray90820: Yea I planned on fresh install

[23:32:59] ctmjr: Bray90820: you do have a user mythtv and a /home/mythtv/.mythtv (last shot)
[23:33:21] Bray90820: mythtv user in mysql?
[23:34:17] ctmjr: no a user named mythtv with a home directory
[23:34:31] Bray90820: Well "/home/mythtv/.mythtv" does exist
[23:35:25] ctmjr: and there is a config.xml in there?
[23:35:54] bill6502: must because starting from the command line works
[23:37:02] Bray90820: Yep config.xml is there
[23:37:13] Bray90820: Downgrade it is
[23:39:06] ctmjr: bill6502: yep your right i just hate lossing to a stupid machine :)
[23:40:25] bill6502: me too, almost tempted to load 15.04 on an old host. maybe I'll just wait for 16.04...
[23:41:06] Bray90820: Would editing /etc/sudoer.d/mythtv do anything because it says something about it here

[23:44:44] bill6502: That's needed to allow the new systemd commands in mythtv-setup to work (e.g. allow starting/stopping the BE.)
[23:45:19] Bray90820: bill6502: Isn't that my issue?
[23:45:29] bill6502: Does Logical Volume Manager (LVM) mean anything to you?
[23:45:45] Bray90820: Yep
[23:46:15] bill6502: no, since you can start from the command line, it's not an issue YET.
[23:46:58] bill6502: What does: lsblk say?
[23:47:25] Bray90820: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/6c461a83c88a5d42495c
[23:49:39] bill6502: I'm trying to relate that to the: dev-mapper-server\x2ddata.device analyze error.
[23:50:27] bill6502: Wondering if those LVM aren't up at the time the backend is starting it the cause of the error.
[23:50:38] bill6502: What's on those 2 disks?
[23:51:08] Bray90820: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/f076bb76b3d04ec301a7
[23:56:20] bill6502: I can't map that to the failure, which is happening when you analyze long after reboot. Happy 14.04...
