[00:26:13] rOOb: Everytime I check the system it's using that much cpu so I don't think it's something like running mythfilldatabase
[00:26:44] rOOb: The system has 4 gigs of ram and has a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz

[06:31:59] buu: brian|lfs: What do you mean, connect it to your tvs?
[06:32:07] buu: That's what mythfrontend does?
[06:35:43] Shadow__X: buu: maybe they want to install the ceton inside the tv
[06:35:51] Shadow__X: mythfrontend doesn't do that :D
[06:36:11] buu: Yeah..
[06:42:14] brian|lfs: ya was trying to find a way to connect to my echos from mythbox
[06:43:04] brian|lfs: and the other issue watching my paid encrypted stations
[06:44:47] Shadow__X: that depends on which streams are flagged with copy once, copy never etc
[06:45:16] brian|lfs: ah ok very lame I pay for the channels
[06:45:18] Shadow__X: mostly its premiums that you have to worry about, but some cable co like to get aggressive with their flagging
[06:45:23] brian|lfs: and the movie channels don't work
[06:45:43] brian|lfs: so how does windows media center get around it
[06:45:54] Shadow__X: brian|lfs: you would be able to watch all of them including premiums using something like win mce, but mythtv cannot
[06:46:07] Shadow__X: because win mce encrypts the streams
[06:46:22] robbak: xkcd.com]
[06:46:51] brian|lfs: yuck just a way to be stuck on windows
[06:47:04] Shadow__X: its a tradeoff
[06:47:06] brian|lfs: fucking Microsoft
[06:47:11] Shadow__X: relax there
[06:47:21] brian|lfs: I"m relaxed lol
[06:47:49] brian|lfs: big trade off if I can't get my streams my ceton eth 6 to my tvs with linux either
[06:48:01] Shadow__X: you can try your channels, pull up whatever view you can of your cable card tuner and see what it says for the channels you care about
[06:48:22] brian|lfs: already tested it
[06:48:28] brian|lfs: everything but movie channels worked
[06:48:34] Shadow__X: ok
[06:48:55] Shadow__X: do you actually want to record from there or just watch live tv?
[06:50:02] brian|lfs: be nice to be able to do both
[06:50:19] brian|lfs: but live tv would be a start if I could at least play recordings back
[06:50:21] Shadow__X: have you setup mythtv before?
[06:50:35] brian|lfs: ya got in on my other box
[06:50:59] brian|lfs: glad I didn't wipe windows after I discovered that pay channels wouldn't work
[06:51:36] Shadow__X: the movie channels?
[06:51:43] brian|lfs: correct
[06:52:04] Shadow__X: so if they are flagged as copy once or whatever, you won't be able to recoord them with linux
[06:52:22] Shadow__X: you can however, use something like a hauppauge hd pvr to record from a cable box directly
[06:52:25] brian|lfs: that's not terrible they show the same movies over and over
[06:52:29] Shadow__X: over analog component
[06:52:53] brian|lfs: problem with that is cable box fees
[06:53:03] Shadow__X: ok..
[06:53:21] Shadow__X: if you want to record the premiums withou the cable box fees, then use windows mce
[06:53:22] brian|lfs: I'm in the USA on Verizon FIOS by the way
[06:53:58] Shadow__X: if you don't care about premiums you can use mythtv, just know that you should take your time with the install and read the manual
[06:54:27] brian|lfs: I followed a guide somewhere it seems tow ork fine
[06:54:28] Shadow__X: while the mythtv distros are pretty straight forward/ people get hung up on mythtv installation because they click click click without reading
[06:55:34] brian|lfs: so no premium to get the stream to my TVs is there a way
[06:55:45] Shadow__X: what
[06:55:59] brian|lfs: mythbox is on a PC
[06:56:14] Shadow__X: myhtv frontend?
[06:56:19] brian|lfs: and the ceton echos only see to work with MC
[06:56:40] Shadow__X: because they are for windows media center
[06:56:49] brian|lfs: correct
[06:56:58] brian|lfs: so is there a hack around that
[06:57:04] [R] ([R]!~rbox@unaffiliated/rbox) has quit (Quit: Leaving)
[06:57:17] Shadow__X: so you bought a product that was designed to work with windows media center, but you don't infact want to use it with windows media center?
[06:57:36] brian|lfs: well everything is windows
[06:57:40] Shadow__X: i don't know of anything that would let you use the echos with anything other than windows media center
[06:57:42] brian|lfs: unfortuantely
[06:57:55] Shadow__X: what? you can buy a pc and install linux on it
[06:58:12] brian|lfs: and connect it to the first box correct?
[06:58:51] Shadow__X: connect what to the first box
[06:59:03] brian|lfs: the additional PCs for the TVs
[06:59:26] Shadow__X: each tv would need a myth frontend machine
[06:59:36] brian|lfs: understood
[06:59:45] Shadow__X: that machine needs to be networked with the mythtv backend
[06:59:56] brian|lfs: that's what I meant by connect
[06:59:58] Shadow__X: if you want to use the echo's, why don't you just use windows?
[07:00:20] brian|lfs: I am for now no choice
[07:00:25] Shadow__X: ok
[07:00:47] brian|lfs: it seems they need to fix the cablecard laws
[07:00:51] Shadow__X: you just wanted to see what else was out there?
[07:00:52] brian|lfs: toa llow more then just windows
[07:01:11] Shadow__X: i am not sure thats a law, its how they handle the encryption
[07:01:13] brian|lfs: exactly
[07:01:29] brian|lfs: well mythtv is popular
[07:01:37] brian|lfs: they need to find a way to handle the encryption
[07:01:46] Shadow__X: yes, as popular as build your own dvr's are anyway
[07:01:54] brian|lfs: lol
[07:01:54] Shadow__X: its not something for mythtv to figure out
[07:02:24] brian|lfs: well isn't the encyption a license thing
[07:02:33] Shadow__X: afaik legally they can't save the stream without keeping the encryption
[07:02:51] Shadow__X: mythtv would have to follow the copy once flag
[07:05:43] brian|lfs: so do you use mythtv?
[07:06:25] Shadow__X: yes
[07:07:04] Shadow__X: i have been using mythtv since 2007 iirc
[07:07:22] brian|lfs: so your ok with no movie channels?
[07:07:56] Shadow__X: when i had the premiums, i used a hauppauge hd pvr to record the premiums over component through a stb
[07:08:47] brian|lfs: ah ok well everything is HD now
[07:09:01] Shadow__X: hd pvr does up to 1080i
[07:09:09] Shadow__X: sure its over analog but thats still hd

[18:37:36] rOOb: Hello all. I'm running v0.27.4-27-g40506c2 on Ubuntu 14.04. For some reason mythbackend is constantely using 100–150% cpu(quad core system).
[18:37:44] rOOb: The system has 4 gigs of ram and has a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
[18:37:53] rOOb: Everytime I check the system it's using that much cpu so I don't think it's something like running mythfilldatabase
[18:40:36] devinheitmueller (devinheitmueller!~devinheit@cpe-74-71-114-159.nyc.res.rr.com) has quit (Ping timeout: 244 seconds)
[18:42:15] buu: rOOb: what does strace say the backend is doing?
[18:46:29] rOOb: buu I'm not exactly sure how to use strace
[18:46:52] buu: Well, first off install it, then try: sudo strace -p <mythbackend pid>
[18:46:59] rOOb: ahh ok
[18:47:03] buu: It'll print out a lot of stuff. Some of it might be useful.
[18:48:14] rOOb: buu Whats a good amount of time to let it run for? 5–10 mins?
[18:48:55] buu: er
[18:49:00] buu: Is it displaying things?
[18:49:15] buu: 30 seconds should be more than enough
[18:49:28] rOOb: So far its only printed: http://pastebin.com/Sh62hKxv
[18:49:48] rOOb: From top:
[18:49:49] rOOb: 2001 mythtv 20 0 4844304 7524 2424 S 153.1 0.2 4294:25 mythbackend
[18:49:54] buu: Huh
[18:50:18] buu: Try uh htop?
[18:50:23] buu: Which one displays threads
[18:51:01] rOOb: Hmm I'm not sure. Let me install htp[
[18:51:03] rOOb: *htop
[18:51:53] buu: Yeah, then hit f5
[18:52:19] rOOb: Just read that
[18:53:19] rOOb: One sec.
[18:54:29] rOOb: http://puu.sh/ftdH1/fd3b1e1c22.png
[18:54:53] rOOb: Not sure if that helps at all
[18:55:15] buu: So it looks like 2213 is the culprit?
[18:55:24] rOOb: Yea
[18:55:27] rOOb: strace on that?
[18:55:32] buu: Yeah..
[18:55:37] buu: I'm not sure its a pid
[18:55:48] rOOb: Ohh
[18:55:49] rOOb: Yea
[18:56:07] buu: Oh, I gues it is
[18:56:08] rOOb: Ok
[18:56:11] rOOb: It's going crazy
[18:56:12] rOOb: lol
[18:56:13] buu: anything interesting?
[18:56:37] rOOb: http://pastebin.com/DfEXrSZ7
[18:56:51] rOOb: Looks like a bad mysql query?
[18:57:28] buu: rOOb: these are system(kernel) functions
[18:57:34] rOOb: Ohh
[18:57:34] buu: so select is the C level one
[18:57:46] rOOb: Thats a bit beyond my skill level hehe
[18:57:54] rOOb: I just saw select and NULL lol
[18:58:58] buu: Yeah..
[18:59:23] buu: So as far as I can tell its attempting to read from a socket, constantly, instead of waiting for new data to show up
[18:59:30] buu: But I don't know nearly enough about mythtv to understand why
[18:59:55] rOOb: Ahh. Well, I appreciate your help so far. You where able to find out much more information that I would have.
[19:00:02] rOOb: I suppose someone else here may know more and chime in
[19:00:34] buu: rOOb: Um, quick question. What does: ls /proc/2213/fd say?
[19:00:52] buu: Or better yet, ls -l
[19:01:12] rOOb: http://pastebin.com/LfGqmmEW
[19:01:30] rOOb: Sec
[19:01:34] buu: Ok, what is 39 pointing at?
[19:01:53] rOOb: http://pastebin.com/NmHL3tDv
[19:02:05] rOOb: lrwx------ 1 mythtv mythtv 64 Feb 4 14:00 38 -> anon_inode:[eventfd]
[19:02:07] rOOb: err
[19:02:13] rOOb: lrwx------ 1 mythtv mythtv 64 Feb 4 14:00 39 -> socket:[14158]
[19:02:44] buu: heh
[19:03:13] buu: And that's where my detective skills stop
[19:03:18] rOOb: haha
[19:03:38] rOOb: Mine stopped after top, dmesg, restart myth/mysql hehe
[19:03:42] buu: stuartm: Help!
[19:06:21] stuartm: I've only got a minute, but try enabling all logging on mythbackend and seeing what, if anything, it says
[19:06:32] stuartm: "-v most --loglevel=debug"
[19:07:54] buu: rOOb: Is there anything that you know of that occurs to cause this? Does it just instantly use 100% cpu as soon as you launch it?
[19:08:59] rOOb: buu It seems like when I launch it it goes to 100%
[19:09:08] rOOb: stuartm ok I will see about turning that on
[19:11:08] rOOb: Hmm. Should I manually start mythbackend or is there a way to specify the loggin level(system is ubuntu 14.04)
[19:11:29] buu: I'd just manually start it
[19:11:34] buu: Assuming you can stop it, heh
[19:11:34] rOOb: Ok
[19:13:11] rOOb: Ok I started mythbackend as user mythtv with -v most --loglevel=debug
[19:13:28] rOOb: Hmm...should I be piping this output to a log file? lol
[19:15:09] buu: Uh, probably
[19:15:18] buu: I don't know how mythtv logs things =[
[19:15:34] rOOb: In the other top it lists --syslog local7
[19:15:41] rOOb: I'm assuming that is what logs it to file
[19:15:47] rOOb: Going to throw that onto the command and see
[19:16:25] rOOb: Bingo
[19:17:44] rOOb: Still not logging 100% what it being output to terminal. I'll just pipe output into a file
[19:22:08] rOOb: I'm going to let this run for a bit and will post a log in here in a little while. I'll ping your nicks when I do.
