[01:18:56] MTughan: My dad and I are thinking of building a new MythTV box. We don't need a whole lot of computing power because we're using an HDHomeRun. We were considering one of Intel's NUCs, but we can't get much storage in there. Is there any problem with using a network drive for the recording storage?
[01:19:25] MTughan: Connectivity to the network will all be gigabit Ethernet and I can reliably get at least 50MB/s from the network drive, usually more.
[01:23:16] MTughan: Also, anyone know what the support of Intel's HD Graphic 5000 is like?

[05:56:31] Roklobsta: heaps
[05:56:33] Roklobsta: but slow
[05:56:39] Roklobsta: because of DB
[05:56:48] Roklobsta: and you'll blow up the stick with DB strashing
[05:56:51] Roklobsta: threashign
[05:56:54] Roklobsta: thrashing
[05:57:10] Roklobsta: I used a 10GB partition
[05:58:29] CCFL_Man: even with USB3?
[05:59:18] CCFL_Man: the writes will eventually kill the stick?
[05:59:53] Roklobsta: probably
[05:59:57] Roklobsta: why a usb stick?
[06:00:10] Roklobsta: i am using a spare 2.5" HDD
[06:00:24] Roklobsta: for OS and 3 3.5" drives for recordings
[06:00:42] Roklobsta: USB stick should be used to boot but hardly ever written to
[06:00:52] CCFL_Man: in the event of a hard drive failure, i wouldn't have to reinstall everything
[06:01:29] CCFL_Man: but, i guess i could just backup the partition
[06:02:08] Roklobsta: all you need to be sure is your mythtv sql database is safe. it's backed up regularly anyway
[06:02:27] CCFL_Man: i only have room for two physical drives
[06:02:59] CCFL_Man: and you said writing the database to another drive while running from a usb stick would be bad?
[06:04:33] Roklobsta: nono keeping the DB on the stick is bad
[06:05:18] CCFL_Man: can i have the DB on one of the hard drives and run off of the usb stick?
[06:05:39] CCFL_Man: without issue
[06:06:52] CCFL_Man: i don't see why not
[06:12:34] Roklobsta: no, make sure you mount the usb stick with noatime option in fstab
[06:12:45] Roklobsta: do things to minimise writes to the stick.
[06:13:24] Roklobsta: just be wary it might cack itself at some point
[06:13:35] Roklobsta: and it'll be slow
[06:13:46] CCFL_Man: hmm..
[06:14:27] CCFL_Man: maybe i should just do what you do
[06:15:39] CCFL_Man: should i spend the extra cash on dvr drives?
[06:20:02] Roklobsta: dvr? no i am using wdgreen in RAID5 mode and using the wdidle3 utility to turn off the annoying 8 second head park.

[16:47:23] dekarl: c) and what version is that? d) did you disable EIT for some channels or some channels completely? (on older versions we did not cache negative lookups for channels in the eit scanner)
[16:49:07] dekarl: but we fixed that in december 2012... https://github.com/MythTV/mythtv/commits/fixe . . . ithelper.cpp
[16:50:28] dekarl: here's the user reporting the issue back then http://lists.mythtv.org/pipermail/mythtv-dev/ . . . /072902.html

[16:58:05] dekarl: while that is a bit old it does have that fix
[16:58:22] jarnos_: dekarl, Atom CPU, 34% according to top.
[16:58:48] dekarl: did you use mysqltuner already?
[16:58:59] jarnos_: dekarl, no
[16:59:25] jarnos_: dekarl, I did not disable EIT for some channels.
[17:01:03] jarnos_: dekarl, mysqld is not running high on CPU most of the time, but mythbackend is.
[17:06:11] jarnos_: dekarl, OS: Mythbuntu 14.04 LTS
[17:07:19] dekarl: jarnos_: I'm going through the fixes and there have been many related to EIT scanning performance. You may want to enable the fixes/0.27 ppa in mythbuntucontrolcentre and update to the latest 0.27

[17:18:16] dekarl: anyway. lots of fixes went in since then. I suggest to update and see if it is still an issue before investing more time :)
[17:18:56] dekarl: Then you can try disabling active EIT scanning and see if that changes anything. (maybe use the guide from xmltv.se instead?)
[17:36:22] jarnos_: dekarl, how do you restart the backend?
[17:38:45] jarnos_: dekarl, I activated the repository and upgraded. Process asked some questions about mythweb and whether other programs use the backend.
[17:44:56] jarnos_: jarnos_, it also warned me to make sure I have firewall installed, but I don't know much about it.

[18:29:54] dekarl: jarnos_: updating should automatically restart the backend. on a command line you can use "service mythtv-backend restart"
[18:33:26] dekarl: jarnos_: the important part would be to run mythtv-setup and set the masterbackendip and backendip to something else then 127.0.0.1.
[18:34:20] dekarl: personally I would not bother with a firewall as you should only put mythtv on your local network and join remote devices via vpn. So do not put mythtv on "the open internet"

MythTV recordings from before the upgrade contained captions, new ones don't. Given the pain that the video4linux people have with the CX25840, maybe it's time to swap it for the HVR-2250 I have
[21:23:34] neufeld: in a box on the shelf. Can anybody say whether VBI works with recent kernels on the HVR-2250?
