[03:13:50] supaplex: stuartm: better cables have better shielding. that's generally the only difference I run into right now. I think HDMI is here to stay, so I invested in the better cables after the $5 cables go on the blink over the flick of a light switch (on a different breaker too).
[03:14:25] supaplex: I probably bought the same $5 cables since that's where I bought my first set. :D

[04:15:05] wagnerrp: supaplex: what would being on a different breaker have anything to do with?
[04:15:40] wagnerrp: isolation is performed at the transformer, outside your house
[04:16:01] wagnerrp: a breaker doesn't do anything until you reach its trip point
[04:17:12] wagnerrp: and if you're getting blips from the little spark gap emission of a light switch, a better cable won't improve anything, since you've got more serious issues
[04:23:39] supaplex: well seeing as how the cable did this all the time, and the new cable does not, seems like it works. Yeah, not related to tripping a breaker, just emitting RF on a different circuit.

[06:17:01] wagnerrp: but the breaker does not perform any sort of isolation
[06:17:46] wagnerrp: the only reason being on a different circuit might make a difference is if that circuit is on the opposite side of a split phase system
[06:21:12] dekarl: Btw, what's the point in running STP cables to a wall mounted WiFi AP in such a way that the cable runs between the antenna and the clients? Is that some esotheric "Wave guide"?
[06:22:27] dekarl: or is that a just your average "but it works!" electrical installation?

[06:27:29] supaplex: how about you all stick to your $5 cable until you don't like it. THEN you can buy what ever the %*@( you want to replace it? NO duh the breaker is not for isolation. If they were on the same breaker, I would expect RF to be even worse. That's the only reason I meant to say they're on different breakers. gee whiz.

[08:11:35] stuartm: which isn't to say that more expensive cables don't necessarily have better shielding or materials, but that the cheaper cable has been tested to have immunity from interference and an error rate of 1 in one billion (for HDMI)
[08:12:48] stuartm: hence all that additional shielding and 'quality' serves no actual purpose than to make the cable more expensive

[22:12:30] Russ: what is the current best way of exporting recordings?
[22:12:40] Russ: back in the day, I used nuvexport, but it appears to be defunt
[22:12:43] Russ: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/User_Manual:Daily_ . . . g_Recordings
[22:20:10] wagnerrp: assuming digital recordings, just download through mythweb, or generate links with mythlink.pl
[22:20:11] jya: skd5aner: I’m here now
[22:20:33] Russ: if I download with mythweb, does it respect the cutlist?
[22:20:38] wagnerrp: no
[22:20:43] Russ: then what's the point?
[22:20:54] wagnerrp: unless you apply the cutlist ahead of time
[22:21:16] skd5aner: jya: I'm trying to bring a frontend back online that I haven't usedi na while....
[22:21:24] skd5aner: jya: everything is working great... except audio...
[22:21:31] Russ: were video transcoder command line options just too much of a pain to chase in regards to maintaining nuvexport?
[22:21:57] jya: skd5aner: do you have audio anywhere or just not in myth?
[22:22:00] skd5aner: jya: I'm using HDMI audio directly to my TV... when I run speaker-test, either directly at the CLI or within the test functionality with mythtv, it cuts in and out
[22:22:08] skd5aner: like, every 1 second
[22:22:09] wagnerrp: nuvexport may indeed still work
[22:22:27] skd5aner: jya: static... silence... static.... silence... etc
[22:22:27] Russ: no, its convinced that ffmpeg doesn't work
[22:22:29] wagnerrp: but since we don't record in nuvs any longer, there's not nearly as much need for it
[22:22:57] skd5aner: jya: only tihng I've tried outside of myth was speaker-test
[22:23:02] jya: skd5aner: could be the TV…
[22:23:12] skd5aner: figured if it didn't work there, no other app would have a chance
[22:23:32] skd5aner: jya: very well could be... but I did switch to the tuner source, and I can hear the static just fine there
[22:24:13] skd5aner: I can easily hook it up to a different TV to test...
[22:24:37] Russ: wagnerrp, then what tool do I use to export/transcode/cut in one go?
[22:24:40] skd5aner: jya: any other thoughts? I updated to the latest nvidia drivers, and just updated ubuntu to the latest kernel in 14.04.1
[22:25:03] wagnerrp: to cut, assuming mpeg2, use mythtranscode
[22:27:01] Russ: hmm....is there an easy way from mythweb to get the info to pass to mythtranscode
[22:27:52] wagnerrp: you call mythtranscode from within the frontend, or mythweb, not from the command line
[22:27:56] wagnerrp: there is no info to pass to it
[22:28:45] Russ: well I'd like to specify things like bitrate, resolution, etc
[22:29:03] wagnerrp: you wouldn't be transcoding, just cutting
[22:29:15] Russ: if I specify bitrate, I'm not transcoding?
[22:29:42] wagnerrp: if you specify bitrate, you are trancoding, but you wouldn't specify bitrate or transcode anything
[22:29:50] wagnerrp: you would just be running it to cut the commercials out
[22:29:52] Russ: hmm...looks like I have to create a transcoding profile. "high, medium, and low" are rather non descriptive
[22:29:53] jya: skd5aner: what do you mean by you switch to the tuner source?
[22:30:15] jya: could very well be that your hdmi is busted on the TV.. tried another hdmi input?
[22:30:24] jya: how long is your hdmi cable?
[22:30:25] skd5aner: I've tried both HDMI ports
[22:30:38] skd5aner: the TV has an ATSC/NTSC tuner built in
[22:30:54] skd5aner: so, it can just tune non-sense and get static, which plays fine via the speakers
[22:31:08] skd5aner: HDMI cable is 1 m
[22:31:09] skd5aner: 1m
[22:31:13] skd5aner: very short
[22:31:31] wagnerrp: Russ: the only reason people use "mythtranscode" these days is to losslessly cut, meaning you're doing very little more than a file copy
[22:31:32] jya: skd5aner: I doubt that testing the tuner input has any relevance to testing the hdmi input
[22:31:32] Russ: and it looks like the transcoding profiles are stored on the backend, because I don't see on my remote frontend anywhere to configure them
[22:31:34] skd5aner: getting ready to try it on a totally different TV now
[22:31:41] jya: ok.. that’s not it then
[22:31:50] skd5aner: jya: it has NO relavance other than the audio doesn't cut in and out
[22:31:50] jya: skd5aner: reboot the PC after doing so
[22:31:51] Russ: wagnerrp, then why does it give me high, medium, and low options?
[22:32:07] skd5aner: jya: I had to unplug the PC to move it to the other TV
[22:32:14] wagnerrp: because you still can use it to transcode, but doing so would give nuvs, which no one actually wants
[22:32:15] skd5aner: brb
[22:32:55] Russ: ok, I go to my media library
[22:32:59] Russ: find the recording, hit menu
[22:33:19] Russ: Then I select job options
[22:33:24] Russ: and begin transcoding
[22:33:40] Russ: it gives me default, autodetect, high quality, medium quality, low quality
[22:33:40] wagnerrp: there should be "high", "medium", "low", and "auto"
[22:33:52] wagnerrp: most people just define "auto" as a the lossless transcoder
[22:34:09] Russ: where do I configure that?
[22:34:16] wagnerrp: mythtv-setup, i believe
[22:34:27] Russ: oh geez
[22:34:42] Russ: always a joy to run that over ssh -X
[22:34:51] Russ: is there an easier way to run mythtv-setup?
[22:34:59] skd5aner: jya: yup, sure enough – it was the TV
[22:35:06] skd5aner: well, at least it works on the new TV
[22:35:57] skd5aner: It's just a TV for a bedroom. will just use stereo, so I can easily just use the stero plug out and the TV can use RCA in
[22:38:31] skd5aner: jya: bummer though... wonder what's up with those ports on the TV. It's certainly not new (circa 2007), but shouldn't be old enough to be screwed yp
[22:38:32] skd5aner: up

[22:45:17] wt79: any tips on how to solve the warning: is mythfilldatabase running error? in the info center in myth
[22:45:37] wt79: i figure thats also why the guide isnt populated
[22:46:44] jya: wt79: what’s the error?
[22:47:41] wt79: more of a warning like i said above. it says warning: is mythfilldatabase running?

[22:48:37] wt79: not sure
[22:49:13] wt79: i didnt install myth on the pc so kinda trying to fix a semi broken install
[22:49:48] wt79: if i kill it and restart it will repopulate
[22:52:12] wt79: seems like it isnt running at startup but im not sure why it isnt
[22:52:29] jya: wt79: mythfilldatabase isn’t run at startup
[22:52:47] jya: you either run it via a cron, or now there’s a new option so it can be started by the backend once a day
[22:52:59] jya: you just need to activate that option
[22:53:37] wt79: and mythfilldatabase i assume fills the tv guide for recording?
[22:53:46] jya: yes
[22:54:04] wt79: so how do i activate that option?
[22:54:06] jya: or you can run it manually once a day.. Set a reminding in your calendar :)
