[12:18:46] dekarl: the amount of work to do for the scheduler depends on the number of channels/video sources/input devices/recording rules/days of guide
[12:19:18] dekarl: so just by running for some time you added more "programmes that have been recorded in the past" for the scheduler to keep track of
[12:19:35] dekarl: with limited memory for the database you may have crossed some treshhold

[13:08:04] toeb: so in conclusion scheduling times > 10s is normal behavior right?

[13:09:29] sphery: how many

[13:09:49] sphery: if > 5, that causes excessively long reschedules (which is why we limit it to 5 in the UI)
[13:10:22] sphery: but if you have 5 or less and have a large number of physical cards, the >10s reschedule may be what your system will be able to achieve
[13:10:30] sphery: ideally, though, your reschedules should take <1s
[13:11:33] toeb: 4 physical devices, each set to 4 simultanious recordings
[13:11:50] sphery: ok, that shouldn't be too bad
[13:12:03] hpeter (hpeter!~hpeter@80.149.237.118) has quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)

[13:13:22] sphery: but if you have lots of channels (which includes "the same" channels on multiple video sources), and/or lots of rules, and/or lots of history, it could take longer
[13:15:36] sphery: or if your system is too slow (CPU/RAM) or with poor MySQL configuration (such as having MySQL data on a file system with barriers enabled and not having sufficiently fast drives), you could have long reschedules

[13:23:14] toeb: database is on btrfs, it seems like barriers are enabled by default...
[13:26:31] sphery: I won't say to disable barriers--as they're on for the protection of your file system
[13:26:45] sphery: you can actually get reasonable performance with them enabled, given sufficient hardware
[13:26:53] sphery: and proper MySQL configuration
[13:27:35] sphery: also, if your tables in MySQL are InnoDB, that will require significantly more tuning of MySQL than if they're MyISAM (which they should be if your schema is valid)
[13:28:14] sphery: but since yours is around 10s, it may not be worth worrying about
[13:28:26] sphery: reschedule is typically a few seconds
[13:28:49] sphery: on a well-configured system
[13:29:32] sphery: and yours is ~3–4x that, so by Fermi estimation, yours is the same :)
[13:30:46] toeb: ok, so nothing to worry about?
[13:30:56] sphery: probably not
[13:33:22] sphery: I'd say it's only worth worrying about if your system starts missing recordings or if the reschedule time goes way up (to the multiple 10s of seconds--especially as it approaches 1min)
[13:33:36] toeb: it came to my attention because if you use the Guide in livetv to schedule new recording by pressing "R" it takes very long until you get any feedback on the sheduling status. Which make my wife press "R" repeatatly...
[13:34:21] sphery: yeah, that's not ideal
[13:35:28] sphery: though whether it's worth the time it would take to improve the reschedule time--especially considering it's likely you'll still be in the ~5s time frame if you get things working ideally--as opposed to just living with it is another question

[15:01:45] justinh: toeb: the frontend could just say "requested that XX program be scheduled to record" – some feedback might be better than none
[15:03:33] justinh: I periodically trim out ancient recording schedules. It makes no sense for the DVR to look back 8 years to see if a one-off showing is going to be on again in the next 14 days
[15:04:45] DaveQB (DaveQB!~quassel@ppp255-134.static.internode.on.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[15:05:42] justinh: further improving the scheduler would probably entail removing functionality a lot of us don't use – which wouldn't be at all popular
[15:06:59] justinh: never used channel or tuner priorities & likely wouldn't lament individual show priorities biting the dust either
[15:11:04] justinh: toeb: you can also iprove the speed of the scheduler by cutting down the number of tuners & channels. A system with one digital tuner split into the default of two tuners is much faster to schedule than 3 tuners with a max of 5 virtual tuners
[15:11:20] justinh: and if there are channels you can live without, do away with em
[15:11:55] justinh: no point carrying shopping/evangelical/whatever channels if all they're doing is slowing the scheduler down
[15:14:06] justinh: hmm. maybe it wouldn't be hard to optimise the scheduler like this – if channel/tuner priorities are all the same – don't put them into the query
[15:14:27] justinh: assuming they make *that* much difference
[15:14:54] AndyCap: I guess putting 2000+ channels into mythtv would be a bad idea then.
[15:15:22] justinh: depends what your expectations of the scheduler are ;-)
[15:15:32] AndyCap: finishing. :)
[15:15:43] justinh: and how long your previous recordings go back.. etc
[15:16:02] AndyCap: been thinking about putting up the old satellite dish again.
[15:20:52] justinh: I've been thinking about being able to live without mythtv again. never mind cutting the cable cord. Cutting the aerial cable
[15:21:48] AndyCap: I dunno, I watch some TV still.
[15:22:11] justinh: nah I mean get everything online
[15:22:41] justinh: it's not good though. Still to restrictive etc
[15:22:46] justinh: *too
[15:23:30] justinh: so anwyay, what's on these 2000+ satellite channels?
[15:23:41] AndyCap: justinh: mostly a freak show.
[15:24:08] justinh: I'm not sure that in the history of television not enough worthy material has been made to fill even 1000 channels
[15:24:10] AndyCap: so it's not exactly mythtv worthy content. but I need some UI for browsing.
[15:25:02] justinh: heh
[15:25:36] AndyCap: the production values on iraqi talk shows were pretty low.
[15:25:37] justinh: I tried putting some music vids on for my daughter when I was at my folks house yesterday – on XBMC. seems the youtube plugin runs into issues with 'official' music vids
[15:25:51] AndyCap: ah, yes, youtube is a treadmill
[15:25:58] justinh: and BBC iPlayer is *Still* borked
[15:26:13] AndyCap: I use youtube-dl from time to time, and it breaks often enough.
[15:26:35] AndyCap: last it was something something "encrypted javascript player"
[15:26:36] justinh: anyway I found a couple of 'music video' plugins – one of which had a 'pop' category – which was fine if you like Michael jackson
[15:27:14] AndyCap: so no eastern european band playing accordions while standing in a river beating each other with fish.
[15:27:16] justinh: but if you search for the damn artists videos with a file extension.. tada! Annoying
[15:28:03] justinh: my teevee doesn't even show youtube ads. everything seems to just work (TM)

[19:11:57] KungFuJesus: and all other machines resolved it properly. This doesn't seem any longer possible, it seems to fail
[19:12:47] justinh: I thought you could use hostnames these days anyway
[19:13:37] KungFuJesus: You used to be able to, I recently bumped up to 0.27.1 with a specific revision on the fixes branch

[19:16:14] KungFuJesus: maybe it's been fixed, I'm not sure. I see some QT code in the latest fixes afterward that seem to do something with QHostAddress validation
[19:19:08] KungFuJesus: it has two IP addresses. Unless you mean mythtv-setup allows you to specify 2
[19:22:57] justinh: sounds like a job for NAT, says the guy who hasn't dabbled much in linux networking beyond simple setups
[19:30:47] KungFuJesus: by remotely accessible I mean not link local
