[01:05:52] Hydr0p0nX: thanks
[01:06:28] JohnQ: It sems that in the mythvideo "listings" view, you can delete files from the UI with the 'd' key, but you cannot delete directories. (Even empty ones). Is there a trick I dont know? Or is this just an oversight in the design?
[01:10:53] JohnQ: (0.27)
[01:11:59] Jay2k1: hmm, i can confirm the "i" menu which offers a delete option on files does not do so on directories in the video view
[01:12:51] ShapeShifter499 (ShapeShifter499!~ShapeShif@unaffiliated/shapeshifter499) has quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[01:14:43] JohnQ: Yep. And 'd' brings up a confirmation to delete a file, and does nothing on dirs. Feels like a deliberate omission, but I cant think why.
[01:15:54] JohnQ: Are you using 0.27 or 0.27.1?
[01:16:59] Jay2k1: MythTV Version : v0.27.1-15-g050bf9d
[01:17:42] JohnQ: Ah. So I shouldn't expect upgrading to fix it :-)
[01:18:12] Jay2k1: hehe, no
[01:20:29] wagnerrp: JohnQ: it's more the fact that we don't track directories, so we can't delete them
[01:20:47] wagnerrp: to be honest, i don't even believe there is a way to delete directories through the backend protocol
[01:21:01] JohnQ: Ouch.
[01:21:25] JohnQ: So... I'm going to need to make a cron job to find and delete empty directories periodically.
[01:22:18] JohnQ: It is strange, because if you have an empty directory on the filesystem, it does not show up in the list view... but if you delete the last file out of a directory, it stays behind.
[01:22:44] wagnerrp: again, because we do not track directories
[01:22:57] wagnerrp: they only show up as a consequence of a tree structure being built out of the metadata
[01:23:18] wagnerrp: the path to the file just being one tree structure we can build off the metadata
[01:24:15] JohnQ: Right... but when deleting an element from the tree structure, if its parent becomes a leaf, then wouldnt it make sense to remove the parent too?
[01:24:22] JohnQ: (For consistency)
[01:24:40] JohnQ: Not a big deal. Just feels odd.
[01:24:43] wagnerrp: no, because the tree is generated off the stored metadata, not the filesystem
[01:25:08] JohnQ: Why does that matter?
[01:25:27] Jay2k1: still, from a user's perspective, if you can delete files it makes sense that you can also delete directories, i can understand that the inability to do so is confusing
[01:25:47] wagnerrp: we would need a special hook in there for that specific view mode, so the UI knew it was dealing with a real tree structure, rather than a generated one
[01:26:21] wagnerrp: or, we would need the UI to trawl the filesystem on every delete and look for empty directories
[01:26:34] JohnQ: I can make a cron job to do that.
[01:26:41] jya_ (jya_!~jyavenard@mythtv/developer/jya) has quit (Quit: jya_)
[01:26:46] Jay2k1: why on every delete
[01:27:05] Jay2k1: can't you just add a general delete option and if that is called, check if the directory is empty just then?
[01:27:34] wagnerrp: isn't that on every delete?
[01:27:50] wagnerrp: or do you mean check if the directory the file existed in was empty?
[01:28:10] Jay2k1: i meant when calling the delete button on a directory
[01:28:31] wagnerrp: that's the thing, it's not a directory
[01:28:37] wagnerrp: it's just a node in the generated tree structure
[01:28:55] wagnerrp: a tree structure that happens to be generated based off the filesystem
[01:30:20] JohnQ: Im not sure I follow why the source of the tree structure matters. I mean, a node is either a leaf (video file) or an interior node (dir or grouping of some kind). So, if you delete a leaf node (file), then the parent of that leaf node becomes a leaf as a result, then it must have been a directory/grouping which is now empty... and could be removed from the generated tree structure (Even if the filesystem is not touched).
[01:31:41] wagnerrp: you're saying when you delete the last video from a node, the node remains?
[01:31:48] JohnQ: Yes
[01:32:02] wagnerrp: then the delete function is just half assed in general

[01:32:15] Jay2k1: that's what we're saying basically
[01:33:21] Jay2k1: huh
[01:33:30] Jay2k1: is it all just in videometadata?
[01:34:06] wagnerrp: and a handful of other tables
[01:34:39] JohnQ: On a different topic: I also have a bug in which the name of the file on the filesystem is not reflected in the listing (even after forcing a scan, or a reboot).
[01:34:54] Jay2k1: i can't seem to find my (now empty) test directory in the db
[01:35:06] Jay2k1: it is still being shown in mythvideo though
[01:35:30] JohnQ: Thats what he said..
[01:35:34] JohnQ: Dirs arent tracked.
[01:35:37] JohnQ: Only files are.
[01:35:40] Jay2k1: that is interesting, now it disappeared
[01:35:59] JohnQ: Right, because you reloaded it somehow.
[01:36:04] Jay2k1: well JohnQ, if it builds that node tree, the parent nodes have to occur there too right?
[01:36:11] wagnerrp: if you exit the video library and wait a few seconds, or initiate a scan, it will refresh the whole tree
[01:36:48] wagnerrp: the location of the file in the tree will be updated after a scan
[01:36:54] JohnQ: wagnerrp: Was that about my "different topic" or Jay2k1's comment?
[01:37:05] wagnerrp: however the name of the file itself, used by the view mode, will always be generated off the metadata
[01:37:25] wagnerrp: that only gets set by the filesystem once, when the video filename is first parsed
[01:38:15] Jay2k1: ok so i created a directory and touched a .mpg file inside, then i told mythvideo to rescan, which made the test folder appear. then i entered it and removed the test mpg via mythvideo. i then exited mythvideo to the main menu of mythfrontend
[01:38:33] Jay2k1: after doing so, entering mythvideo does not show the empty directory anymore
[01:38:49] JohnQ: Right... but if I create a file in a directory and call it "CanYouSeeMe", and rescan, and instead of "CanYouSeeMe" I get ""Deadliest Catch – The Bait 2x06..."
[01:38:49] Jay2k1: i didn't have to issue a rescan
[01:39:12] JohnQ: Jay2k1: Thats expected.
[01:39:28] Jay2k1: re-entering mythvideo is not an option for you then?
[01:39:35] mattwj2002 (mattwj2002!~Matt@wikisource/pdpc.active.mattwj2002) has left #mythtv-users ()
[01:39:41] Jay2k1: i thought the empty dir would just stay in mythvideo forever
[01:39:50] wagnerrp: the video library hashes all files it scans, so that if you move the file, it can detect the move, and update the location of the video in the database during the next scan
[01:40:03] wagnerrp: your empty file is going to have the exact same hash as any other empty file
[01:40:26] Jay2k1: hmm, i'll dd some /dev/random into it
[01:40:29] jya_ (jya_!~jyavenard@mythtv/developer/jya) has quit (Quit: jya_)
[01:40:32] JohnQ: None of these files are empty.
[01:40:38] Jay2k1: my test file was
[01:41:10] JohnQ: Sorry I should say none of *my* files are empty.
[01:43:17] JohnQ: Even stranger... when I create a second file ("CanyouSeeMe2" with different file content) iot also apears in the UI after a scan as "Deadliest Catch – The Bait 2x06..."
[01:43:30] JohnQ: *it (not iot)
[01:43:49] Jay2k1: same behaviour after using a file with random data
[01:44:44] Jay2k1: JohnQ: maybe "CanYouSeeMee" matches some kind of metadata lookup. try a random filename ("testfile.mpg" worked for me)
[01:44:51] Jay2k1: anyway
[01:45:09] Jay2k1: exiting and re-entering mythvideo makes empty folders disappear for me
[01:45:24] Jay2k1: without a rescan
[01:46:16] JohnQ: Thats expected.
[01:46:53] Jay2k1: so what do you want to be able to do? have mythvideo remove the actual directory on the file system?
[01:47:21] JohnQ: Just created a third file named "SplorkBlatz" with unique file content and rescaned. I now have three "Deadliest Catch – The Bait 2x06..." listed in that dir.
[01:47:33] Jay2k1: that sounds weird
[01:47:37] JohnQ: Indeed.
[01:47:54] Jay2k1: but what about my question?
[01:49:22] JohnQ: Well.. ideally Id like to be able to delete directories, but based on wagnerrp's explanation, that does not seem possible. I also think the tree node shoudl disappear when it becomes empty, but that is not critical. But right now, I'm really just confused as to why the filenames in the listing have nothing to do with the names of the files on the filesystem..

[01:50:27] wagnerrp: it's not that it's not possible. it's just that the way the system is designed does not easily allow for it
[01:50:53] wagnerrp: as mentioned, they're not filenames, but generated from the metadata (that may be parsed from the filename)
[01:51:03] wagnerrp: why you're getting such weird metadata for that filename... no clue
[01:51:03] JohnQ: By "not possible" I just mean "unlikely to be implemented"
[01:51:23] Jay2k1: i admit that when you delete the last video in a directory, something else should happen than what happens now
[01:52:07] JohnQ: It doesn't seem to be specific to the filename. Ive tried several, and they just keep creating identical clones. So strange.
