[11:43:54] djbeirut: configuring mythtv is one of the hardest things i have tried to do... can anyone help me out here please?
[11:46:58] Jay2k1: what exactly gives you trouble?
[11:50:52] djbeirut: i am trying to setip mythtv on headless server. and i want it to get the channels from an m3u playlist. i have no dvb card
[11:51:04] djbeirut: i am having trouble setting that up.
[11:51:12] Jay2k1: oh.
[11:52:10] djbeirut: hehe.. why oh?
[11:53:07] Jay2k1: i don't know. as far as i know (and i'm by far no expert, just a mythv user and i have linux experience) mythtv is configured via GUI.
[11:54:38] djbeirut: well i kinda have gui access. and i can run the mythtv-setup. it says something about room not being in a group or something but i ignored that. so i can access the gui.
[11:54:50] djbeirut: *rrot
[11:54:53] djbeirut: root
[11:55:05] Jay2k1: ah ok.
[11:55:18] croppa_ (croppa_!~stuart@14.14.233.220.static.exetel.com.au) has quit ()
[11:55:31] Jay2k1: it's probably not meant to be run as root, but that probably doesn't matter much
[11:56:31] djbeirut: i am really a linux noob. so i am not sure how to run it as something else
[11:57:05] Jay2k1: so then your main issue is getting channels from your m3u file into mythtv i guess. what channels are they? i mean, you said you have no dvb card.
[11:57:35] djbeirut: it's a m3u list i have created for some webstreams that i usually use in vlc
[11:58:38] Jay2k1: i'm not sure mythtv can record/playback/use web streams
[11:59:51] Jay2k1: as far as i know, you either have an internal tuner (like a dvb card) or an external tuner (set-top box) which feeds its video signal into the myth box
[12:00:18] djbeirut: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/User_Manual:Settin . . . ing_Recorder
[12:00:24] Jay2k1: oh i see.
[12:00:59] Jay2k1: so, what happens if you try to follow the steps described there?
[12:04:14] djbeirut: i just changed the m3u source to another test m3u test that is provided in the guide and it was able to import the channels!
[12:05:51] Jay2k1: so it basically works and you need to figure out why myth won't accept your m3u file
[12:06:20] djbeirut: well.. it seems that i need to figure that out now. btw. can i install a windows frontend for the mythtv?
[12:06:30] djbeirut: coz i only have a backend on my server
[12:06:37] Jay2k1: hmm, yes and no.
[12:06:59] Jay2k1: there's no "native" windows frontend.
[12:07:34] Jay2k1: some guy used to compile myth for windows, so there are binaries out there, but i found that they often are too old for the current myth version
[12:07:47] djbeirut: i can just use xbmc?
[12:08:01] Jay2k1: that might work, i once successfully did that.
[12:08:40] Jay2k1: they do have myth support, but i don't know if they're up to date with the current myth protocol.
[12:09:06] djbeirut: i will try that.. if i can do that and get it to work with the current list that seems to work on the backend i will try to work on the m3u list

[12:27:37] djbeirut: how can i verify that the backend is running as it is supposed to and i can access it from outside the local network?
[12:28:57] Jay2k1: you're assuming it is always running as it is supposed to, and if you notice it does anything weird you can check the log files
[12:29:15] Jay2k1: and yes, you can access it from outside if you must
[12:31:13] djbeirut: i am trying to set it up to be accessed from outside. but i don't know if it is. when i try to connect to it from xbmc it says that it is not able to connect check the network.
[12:31:30] djbeirut: is it possible to access mythtv from a web browser?
[12:32:06] Jay2k1: ok first of all, mythbackend has a custom port (i think it is 6543 or something usually) which has to be accessible from wherever you try to access it.
[12:32:55] Jay2k1: also, you need to set the IP address in mythtv-setup i think, by default it is set to 0.0.0.0, if you wanna access it from other machines it needs to be the real IP address
[12:33:04] amizraa (amizraa!~amizraa@gateway/tor-sasl/amizraa) has joined #mythtv-users
[12:33:36] Jay2k1: see first entry here http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/User_Manual:Detail . . . ackend_Setup
[12:33:50] djbeirut: in the general tab from mythtv-setup i changed the ip adress to the public ip address wich is open on all ports
[12:34:32] Jay2k1: secondly, there's mythweb which is kind of a web interface for mythtv. you can create recording schedules there, browse your recordings, download and/or stream them there
[12:34:40] Jay2k1: view upcoming recordings
[12:35:30] Jay2k1: if you can't seem to connect to that external IP on that port, you might try telnetting to that IP and port
[12:37:40] djbeirut: i tried to telnet to the 6544 and it got refused! :/

[12:38:16] djbeirut: The remote system refused the connection.
[12:38:45] Jay2k1: that sounds like a firewall.
[12:39:07] djbeirut: i dob't have a firewall there
[12:39:22] Jay2k1: is that external IP you have equal to the internal ip (the "real" ip) of that server?
[12:39:29] Jay2k1: like, is it in a datacenter or something?

[12:39:55] Jay2k1: or what i really want to know, is it behind a NAT router?
[12:40:03] djbeirut: nope
[12:40:16] djbeirut: it's a public ip directly
[12:40:47] Jay2k1: can you connect to it on other ports, say, SSH?
[12:40:52] Jay2k1: (is it a VPS?)
[12:41:09] djbeirut: yes it is a vps

[12:41:17] djbeirut: ss
[12:41:18] djbeirut: ssh
[12:41:24] Jay2k1: hmm ok
[12:42:08] Jay2k1: so you could try to ssh to your VPS and then try "telnet localhost 6543"
[12:42:21] Jay2k1: to see if it's a network issue or mythbackend issue

[12:44:28] Jay2k1: again on the SSH connection: wget -O – localhost:6544
[12:45:07] djbeirut: i got some html code back
[12:45:10] Jay2k1: great
[12:45:31] Jay2k1: so that works
[12:45:50] djbeirut: if you say so :P
[12:45:51] Jay2k1: (the 6544 port gives a little status page in HTML, so you can access it via a browser)
[12:46:35] djbeirut: i can't access it from the outside on that port
[12:47:03] Jay2k1: ok, go to the /var/log/ folder

[22:18:46] justinh: it always says the backend is in 1080i mode, but I don't believe it

[22:20:44] skd5aner: all I know is MNV really needs a lot of love
[22:21:25] justinh: I'm tempted to have a go making a totally unendorsable plugin

[22:21:46] clever: they advertise being able to push youtube videos to it
[22:21:56] justinh: I didn't buy it for the smart stuff. I bought it because it was £289.99
[22:22:13] clever: ive never seen any of that smart stuff work well
[22:22:32] justinh: when you get to the iplayer/youtube screens in the TV menus they work well. But getting there..
[22:22:45] justinh: oh I need to pick some expert brains BTW.
[22:22:55] clever: with my cable box, it only works against a certain ios app
[22:23:04] clever: the same app (by the same company!) on android doesnt work
[22:23:07] justinh: when the TV is turned off, my backend seems to not want to boot up
[22:23:15] clever: and its unable to ff/rewind youtube
[22:23:34] justinh: could that be a bios setting thing? Can't remember ever seeing a 'halt on no display' option
[22:23:50] clever: ive never seen such a thing either
[22:24:04] clever: but my windows pc does something diff, if the HDMI input isnt active, it disables it
[22:24:04] justinh: I think I remember hearing tales of woe about this kind of stuff
[22:24:12] clever: so you cant enable that output at all
[22:24:25] clever: you have to set the tv to the right input and reboot the whole desktop
[22:25:32] justinh: oh this is perculiar to nvidia 8x00 cards apparently
[22:25:53] justinh: it can supposedly be fixed by fitting 75R terminators to the VGA port. Hahaha. Worth a shot!
[22:26:01] clever: wtf? lol
[22:26:25] justinh: how a video card should be able to hold a bus & prevent even a BIOS load though...

[22:37:12] clever: i can capture mpegts right from the NIC
[22:38:36] justinh: oh yeah that's another thing. I keep storing my mixer settings in alsamixer, but every boot it comes back up, SPDIF is muted. Very annoying. Trying to find a way round that

[22:52:51] justinh: just let me be the master of my own ****ing domain, GIT!
[22:53:01] EvilGuru: ALSA is fine for what it does, but desktop use really does require a soundserver
[22:53:21] justinh: well I ain't removing PUBEaudio if I can avoid it
[22:53:38] wagnerrp: EvilGuru: why?
[22:54:20] EvilGuru: wagnerrp: For one thing the alternative is to do mixing in the kernel, now that is evil
[22:54:36] wagnerrp: no, the alternative is to do mixing in the hardware
[22:54:51] wagnerrp: you only do it in kernel for really cheap hardware
[22:55:08] justinh: OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. FFS talk about unintuitive
[22:55:37] justinh: I had to go to 'configuration', then select SPDIF only from a dropdown... THEN I could see the controls for SPDIF
[22:55:44] EvilGuru: wagnerrp: As soon as you have to start dealing with sample rate conversion it becomes a nightmare to do in hardware
[22:55:49] justinh: that's NOT 'show all controls'. Bastards
[22:56:11] wagnerrp: the only time you have to deal with sample rate conversion is when doing digital audio
[22:56:21] justinh: that's even worse than having to navigate between pages to set Windows mixer settings
[22:56:42] justinh: it still needs to go die in a fire & take all its advocates with it
[22:57:19] EvilGuru: wagnerrp: It is needed so often, though, and it is hard (even myth will offer to do resampling itself to 48kHz due to the crappiness of pre-Pulse everything else)
[22:57:20] justinh: hey ho. Maybe that'll have fixed it now anyway.
[22:57:28] andreaz (andreaz!~andre_000@p5DD14D8D.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[22:57:54] justinh: if it won't support the samplerate you need, you should buy a new one
[22:58:28] EvilGuru: justinh: I have Amarok and MythTV open, one wants 48kHz the other 44.1kHz, you need to do SRC
[22:58:30] justinh: and if you're using odd sample rates it's your own fault :P
[22:59:01] justinh: odd use cases, desktop users of mythtv :-)
[22:59:24] EvilGuru: Desktop video streaming + audio player, or streaming + Skype, etc, etc
[22:59:29] justinh: anyway.. just gimme a bloody traditional volume mixer showing me all the ins & outs.. none of that other rubbish
[22:59:50] justinh: it's just weird being confronted with a new install where there's no such thing
[23:00:07] EvilGuru: I did have an old creative card that did hardware remixing and would convert everything to 44.1kHz; except it did a poor job
[23:00:10] EvilGuru: *48kHz
[23:00:20] justinh: SBLive!  ?
[23:00:26] EvilGuru: Audigy 2
[23:00:35] justinh: heh. I had one of those too
[23:00:47] justinh: supposedly junk but to my ears it sounded OK
[23:00:51] EvilGuru: Could comfortably ABX between it and the decent speex SRC code
[23:01:25] justinh: maybe it was just awful in linux
[23:02:18] justinh: I was trying to convert my dad inlaw's laptop to linux mint today. Except the wifi wouldn't work for love nor money
[23:02:24] EvilGuru: In the time of dmix its Linux support was fantastic, I never had issues with multiple streams
[23:04:20] justinh: poor old chap is still running XP, and it was painfully slow. So I uninstalled all the Windows Live stuff – and it was fun again. WTH
[23:05:13] justinh: yeah I'm always going on about how linux isn't for FUN or creative uses.. and bad sound handling – or functional but very basic handling was all we had for a long time
[23:05:55] justinh: I just wish they'd get the basics right. A volume control app shouldn't take 15 minutes to figure out
[23:06:05] EvilGuru: Pulse got a bad reputation because a certain distribution decided to ship it before it was ready, do a poor job, and break everyone's audio in the process
[23:06:55] justinh: I don't really care a damn WHAT it is or how it works, so long as it does & it allows me to control it
[23:08:04] justinh: so if I wanted to use pulse, will mythfrontend ever use it?
[23:08:20] justinh: and will it actually work if I want to pass surround audio out?
[23:08:23] EvilGuru: Just select Pulse:default as the audio device
[23:08:59] justinh: is all the ALSA:stuff just emulated then?
[23:09:13] EvilGuru: Not sure about passthrough, Pulse supports it (see above link w.r.t to XBMC) not sure if myth does
[23:09:27] EvilGuru: The ALSA stuff will be real but Pulse might have an exclusive lock on the hardware
[23:10:02] EvilGuru: At least in the UK there is almost no benefit to passthrough as all 5.1 stuff is AAC
[23:10:14] EvilGuru: *broadcast 5.1
[23:10:39] justinh: time to see if my RX-V350 can deal
[23:11:05] justinh: hahaha no
[23:11:25] justinh: whoah. AV receivers got cheaper though. LOTS
[23:11:35] EvilGuru: Yeah only DTS and AC-3 through S/P-DIF, and HDMI supports LPCM
[23:12:04] justinh: that's all BS IMHO. As if the physical interface can't support a higher bitrate LOL
[23:12:40] justinh: Coaxial.. phonos are still good for tens of MHz
[23:12:46] EvilGuru: The optical interconnect is crappy, though
[23:13:03] EvilGuru: But it will do 2Ch 192kHz 24-bit; should be good for EAC-3
[23:13:12] wagnerrp: SPDIF is only rated for ~2Mbps
[23:13:24] justinh: SPDIF the protocol
[23:13:49] EvilGuru: wagnerrp: I get closer to 9Mbit/s (192e3*2*24/1024^2)
[23:13:56] justinh: 192khz.. I find that hilarious too
[23:14:05] justinh: got bats?
[23:14:18] wagnerrp: meaning 2ch 48kHz 16-bit
[23:14:36] wagnerrp: ditto with 24-bit
[23:15:14] justinh: whoah. buying an AV receiver is actually a better proposition than a remote controlled HDMI switch
[23:15:43] justinh: £169 buys a yamaha something 375.. 4 HDMI inputs.. and it's an AV receiver to boot. Heh
[23:16:28] EvilGuru: Yep, and that will support all of the goodness over HDMI
[23:16:58] wagnerrp: (inaudible) goodness
[23:17:12] justinh: telly doesn't have ARC. I can deal with that
[23:17:28] wagnerrp: ARC is mighty flaky
[23:17:40] justinh: it does have coaxial out though.. and you can select whether it's raw or compressed
[23:17:42] wagnerrp: either it works, or you basically have to powercycle the whole lot to get it to "resync"
[23:17:54] justinh: sounds like fun
[23:18:23] justinh: oh yeah.. cos it's still gotta be handshaked & all that stuff
[23:20:14] disputin (disputin!~sean@65.102.58.17) has quit (Quit: Leaving.)
[23:20:39] justinh: I dunno if I'm gonna bother with surround or not yet
[23:21:32] justinh: the AV amp is coming back in the house, I know that much
[23:22:19] justinh: the kids are starting to love music, and I'll be teaching them to appreciate good sound if I can. Kids today.. they need some BASS in their lives
[23:22:49] justinh: less vertical video, more <500Hz
[23:28:56] clever: :D
[23:30:57] wagnerrp: vertical video?
[23:31:08] wagnerrp: you mean portrait, vs. landscape?
[23:31:47] justinh: portrait video... so so so so so wrong
[23:33:46] clever: ever seen the PSA on verticle video?
[23:35:24] justinh: PSA?
[23:35:31] clever: public service announcement
[23:37:32] clever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bt9zSfinwFA
[23:38:35] justinh: mwahahaha
[23:38:40] clever: yep
