[05:54:03] k-man: any ideas how I might reduce that?
[05:54:16] SmallwoodDR82: what frontend?
[05:54:59] k-man: mythtv-frontend
[05:56:01] SmallwoodDR82: look into deinterlacing
[05:56:28] BillK (BillK!~BillK-Fre@106-69-9-170.dyn.iinet.net.au) has joined #mythtv-users
[05:56:49] SmallwoodDR82: i don't use mythtv frontend but i had the same issue with xbmc and it was deinterlacing issue
[05:57:08] SmallwoodDR82: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Deinterlacing
[05:57:49] k-man: ok, thanks SmallwoodDR82
[05:58:22] SmallwoodDR82: good luck!
[06:01:15] k-man: thanks SmallwoodDR82
[06:01:31] wagnerrp: tearing is a v-sync issue
[06:01:35] wagnerrp: deint is something different
[06:02:12] wagnerrp: with deint issues, you're going to see tearing all through the screen
[06:02:14] [R] ([R]!~rbox@unaffiliated/rbox) has quit (Quit: Leaving)
[06:02:16] SmallwoodDR82: he said during motion. and when i changed my deinterlacing method it went away
[06:02:19] k-man: well – what is the definition of tearing? I'm not sure I'm using the right terminology
[06:02:22] wagnerrp: v-sync is just one line across
[06:02:47] wagnerrp: v-sync is when you do not finish rendering one frame before it gets pushed to the display
[06:02:56] SmallwoodDR82: again i'm on xbmc frontend so we might not be apples to apples here.
[06:02:59] wagnerrp: so you have half of one frame on top, and half of the previous frame on the bottom
[06:03:03] wagnerrp: v-sync is v-sync
[06:03:07] wagnerrp: it affects all
[06:03:12] k-man: it appears like part of the fast moving object gets left behind sort of
[06:03:25] k-man: or like part of the image doesn't update with the rest
[06:03:44] Goga777 (Goga777!~Goga777@128-71-38-84.broadband.corbina.ru) has quit (Quit: Leaving)
[06:03:46] wagnerrp: that could be deint
[06:04:09] wagnerrp: straight interlaced content on a progressive display will show "combing"
[06:04:18] wagnerrp: where every other line is a different frame
[06:04:38] wagnerrp: but since you are almost certainly scaling, you won't quite see that
[06:04:59] wagnerrp: there's going to be some interpolation, so lack of deint, or poor selection of deint filter, will appear similar to ghosting
[06:05:43] k-man: wagnerrp, ok – i never set any preferences re deinterlacing yet so i presume it's using the defaults
[06:05:49] k-man: if there is such a thing?
[06:06:52] k-man: also it seems to happen about 1/3 of the way down the screen
[06:07:12] wagnerrp: there's a clear divide part way down the screen?
[06:07:27] wagnerrp: that's v-sync

[15:49:35] mattwj2002: I am considering upgrading my mythtv box
[15:49:49] mattwj2002: how much storage do all you guys have?
[15:50:50] wagnerrp: ~25TB
[15:50:52] mattwj2002: I would also like to upgrade the squirrel currently running my mythtv box :)
[15:51:03] mattwj2002: 25TB? :O
[15:51:05] mattwj2002: seriously?
[15:51:09] wagnerrp: uh huh
[15:51:15] mattwj2002: damn :)
[15:51:36] mattwj2002: how many drives at what storage capacity?
[15:52:48] mattwj2002: wagnerrp: are you running jbod or raid?
[15:53:01] wagnerrp: software (ZFS) raid
[15:53:42] mattwj2002: is that on your mythtv box or do you have separate NAS?
[15:53:55] mattwj2002: sorry for the 100 questions
[15:53:56] mattwj2002: :)
[15:53:59] wagnerrp: 5+2x3TB -Z2, plus four spare 2TB drives
[15:54:41] wagnerrp: looks like ~6.5TB free
[15:55:08] mattwj2002: hehe
[15:55:29] ** AndyCap has 10x2TB in raid6 exported over nfs **
[15:56:00] wagnerrp: yeah, i'm going to need to expand here in a bit
[15:56:09] mattwj2002: I was thinking of building a NAS and just having mythtv drop off programs there but I could see potential issues with a NAS and mythtv
[15:56:15] wagnerrp: once i dump the scratch disks to the array, i'll be full
[15:56:18] mattwj2002: 25 TB not enough?
[15:56:20] mattwj2002: :)
[15:56:44] wagnerrp: the array will be full, the 8TB in scratch will be empty
[15:56:46] AndyCap: wagnerrp: recordings or have you archived all your optical media too?
[15:57:03] wagnerrp: yes
[15:57:43] mattwj2002: tape backup!
[15:57:45] mattwj2002: :P
[15:58:07] wagnerrp: what good are tape backups? they're not live and immediately usable
[15:58:25] mattwj2002: wagnerrp: that was a joke
[15:58:26] mattwj2002: :)
[15:58:56] mattwj2002: or maybe floppy disk backup would be better (also a joke) ;)

[23:13:25] wagnerrp: few more seconds and i would have put on my admin pants... :P
[23:15:03] wagnerrp: jbendes: just a quick sanity check, you're running linux, right?
[23:16:08] mattwj2002: hey guys
[23:16:23] mattwj2002: I am getting a blank mythweb page after my upgrade
[23:16:25] mattwj2002: any ideas?
[23:16:55] wagnerrp: faulty rewrite engine?
[23:17:14] wagnerrp: php not installed, or not configured in apache?

[23:20:50] wagnerrp: misfire?
[23:21:12] skd5aner: why do people make IR receivers that claim they are "MCE USB", but in fact... aren't
[23:21:39] skd5aner: how hard is it to make a common framework for a USB IR receiver :S
[23:22:01] skd5aner: I want to use the receiver that came with this zbox, with a different MCE remote I have that I didn't use with the receiver that came with it
[23:22:03] wagnerrp: because there's "MCEUSB" the linux device driver, and then there's "MCEUSB" any remote that can work on windows with windows mce
[23:22:18] wagnerrp: very few even know about the former to know about it
[23:23:37] skd5aner: that begs the question: what's so different then with the Windows Driver that it "just works" there?
[23:23:56] wagnerrp: it doesn't
[23:24:09] wagnerrp: they can make whatever they want, so long as it appears to work on a windows machine running mce
[23:24:23] wagnerrp: including an HID keyboard with hard-coded inputs, designed for the hotkeys used by MCE
[23:24:26] skd5aner: browsing through lirc's git repository – good to see Jarod Wilsons name plastered everywhere – blast from the past
[23:25:28] skd5aner: that said, LIRCs last commit was 4 years ago :(
[23:26:18] skd5aner: someone has forked LIRC to include support for this particular IR Receiver, and it was edited 2 years ago, but I'd really prefer to run the official version
[23:26:22] jbendes: wagnerrp: yes I am, but am rethinking the use of this package. Seems a bit excessive for what I'm trying to do
[23:26:42] wagnerrp: for just live tv, yes. mythtv is probably a bit excessive
[23:27:02] wagnerrp: mythtv is a clustered DVR application, not just a tv viewing application
[23:27:46] skd5aner: live tv is just a subset

[23:35:45] berglh: hi, I'm having a problem with MythTV, wondering if people can point me in the right direction
[23:36:35] berglh: I am running Ubuntu Server 13.10 on a headless box with a Sony PlayTV USB Tuner
[23:36:58] berglh: I have obtained the firmware for this device as per the linuxtv website
[23:37:06] jbendes (jbendes!~jonathan@ool-44c0c9ca.dyn.optonline.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[23:37:09] berglh: I have configured MythTV, run through the setup
[23:37:27] berglh: I can watch TV, record TV
[23:37:41] berglh: The problem is after recording a program
[23:37:48] berglh: The tuner enters a locked state
[23:37:57] berglh: After that, I'm unable to use it to watch live TV
[23:38:24] wagnerrp: the tuner should be in a locked state for as long as mythbackend is running
[23:38:40] wagnerrp: it keeps the tuner locked to prevent other applications from accessing and locking it themselves
[23:38:41] berglh: I receive the "You should have received a channel lock by now"
[23:39:08] berglh: Well, I saw the setting in MythTV setup for the tuner
[23:39:31] berglh: I enabled it and restarted mythtv-backend
[23:39:35] wagnerrp: locking the tuner, and getting a lock on the channel, are two separate things
[23:40:18] berglh: well, the tuner fails to lock channel after recording something
[23:40:22] berglh: I can then change to the second tuner
[23:40:26] berglh: watch something
[23:40:33] berglh: as soon as I record something with the second tuner

[23:40:45] berglh: it is unable to obtain channel lock on either tuner on livetv
[23:41:29] berglh: it's curious
[23:42:22] berglh: if I restart mythtv-backend
[23:42:34] berglh: the tuner that is unable to get a channel lock is still affected
[23:42:56] berglh: if I unplug the tuner, and it is reinitialised in dmesg output
[23:43:00] berglh: it starts working fine again
[23:44:20] berglh: even without restarting mythtv
[23:46:05] wagnerrp: sounds like a driver/firmware issue
[23:50:24] berglh: thanks, I'll go through the device setup again
[23:50:50] berglh: I mean, short of downloading the firmward file to /lib/firmware
[23:50:59] berglh: there was not really anything else I needed to do
[23:51:14] berglh: as it is apparently supported in kernel
[23:51:16] wagnerrp: i mean either the driver or the firmware are bugged
[23:51:35] wagnerrp: causing it to lock up, and need to be re-inited to fix it

[23:56:11] berglh: I don't have a Playstation to plug it in to
[23:56:26] berglh: what does putting the firmware in /lib/firmware achieve?
[23:56:34] berglh: I mean, I'm wondering if the ondevice firmware needs to be updated
[23:56:43] berglh: perhaps that's why it's freaking out
[23:56:44] wagnerrp: when the device is plugged in and inited, that file is uploaded to the device
[23:57:03] wagnerrp: it saves the manufacturer from having to add onboard ROM on which to store it
[23:57:36] wagnerrp: it's effectively the OS that runs on the hardware
[23:57:45] berglh: cool, that makes sense then
[23:57:53] berglh: thanks for the clarification
