[13:10:29] _stefanb: I have verified that frequency & etc. are correct, i.e. with czap & mplayer/ffmpeg I see the 3 new HDTV channels on that transponder
[13:10:55] _stefanb: mythtv-setup successfully detected the three new HDTV channels on that transponder
[13:11:16] _stefanb: but when I go with Live TV on any of the 3 HDTV channels there is ... nothing

[17:05:54] sheptard: wagnerrp: fair enough
[17:06:21] wagnerrp: this for a livecd or something?

[17:07:34] sheptard: unraid?
[17:07:42] Korny: I'm migrating away from unraid
[17:08:04] wagnerrp: with union filesystems, you can only write to the top-most layer
[17:08:22] sheptard: if you want the most free space, just do raid0 and say eff fault tolerance
[17:08:41] Korny: sheptard: most free space meaning put the file on the disk with the most free space
[17:08:49] wagnerrp: or don't RAID at all, and just use storage groups
[17:09:16] Korny: I don't use aufs for myth, i use the built in storage groups
[17:09:38] Korny: and I'm not sure what you mean by top most layer
[17:09:57] wagnerrp: you have one filesystem, and then you union another over top of it
[17:10:08] wagnerrp: you can read from either layer, but only write to the top layer
[17:10:26] Korny: you can only write to union?
[17:10:43] wagnerrp: you have to unmount the union if you wish to write to the bottom layer
[17:12:06] Korny: hmmm but the files are showing up on the individual drives /seagate8/ is showing the files that are written on /array1(the aufs) mount
[17:12:36] Korny: in the proper directorys

[17:16:09] wagnerrp: you're trying to use aufs to make one giant directory of all your files, correct?
[17:16:24] Korny: yes
[17:16:49] wagnerrp: so you mount one of your filesystems in the directory, then aufs mount another on top of it, and another on top of that, and so on?
[17:17:25] Korny: no
[17:18:18] wagnerrp: that's how you use union mounts
[17:18:26] Korny: Aufs makes just uses a standard mount point and combines specified mounts, in my case seagate1 seagate8 wd1 and samsung1
[17:18:50] Korny: but its not layer over layer over layer
[17:19:05] wagnerrp: yes it is
[17:19:14] hpeter (hpeter!~hpeter@77-56-201-52.dclient.hispeed.ch) has joined #mythtv-users
[17:19:44] Korny: ok so whats the harm in it? the data is still written to the individual disks
[17:20:02] Korny: at this time its being written to the disk with the most space
[17:20:25] wagnerrp: meaning mythtv is writing to the individual disks?
[17:21:00] wagnerrp: in that case, mythtv is also reading from the individual disks, so i don't see the point of the union
[17:21:20] Korny: no
[17:21:29] Korny: This has NOTHING to do with mythtv
[17:21:37] wagnerrp: then what is load balancing?
[17:21:43] wagnerrp: s/load/free space/
[17:22:03] wagnerrp: aufs does not do that. any writes made to it only go to the top layer
[17:22:22] Korny: by top layer are you saying the aufs mount?
[17:22:37] wagnerrp: and if you're manually writing to the bottom layers, you run the risk of losing sync with the various metadata aufs writes to the top layer
[17:22:39] wagnerrp: yes
[17:23:20] Korny: because I'm looking specifically at /mnt/seagate8 and the file that I wrote to /mnt/array1 is there
[17:23:40] wagnerrp: then that is the top most layer, and all writes will go there
[17:24:14] wagnerrp: only the top most layer is written to by aufs, and aufs does not expect any changes to be made to lower layers without its knowledge
[17:24:47] wagnerrp: that's why common behavior is to use a static read-only bottom layer, and a writable (and usually tmpfs) top layer
[17:25:12] Korny: create=mfs[:second] | most−free−space[:second]
[17:25:12] Korny: Selects a writable branch which has most free space. In order to keep the performance, you can specify the duration (’second’) which makes aufs hold the index of last selected writable branch until the specified seconds expires. The first time you create something in aufs after the specified seconds expired, aufs checks the amount of free space of all writable branches by internal statfs call and the held branch index will be
[17:25:12] Korny: updated. The default value is 30 seconds.
[17:25:28] wagnerrp: it's meant to allow a pristine lower layer to be stored on a CD or flash drive, or network boot, with individual differentiations layered on top
[17:25:58] Korny: for my purposes the only things accessing the actual drives will be aufs
[17:25:59] wagnerrp: then that is a new behavior i've never heard of
[17:26:38] wagnerrp: and not the standard pattern for a union fs
[17:26:46] clever: ive used aufs by putting my root image into a squashfs (readonly compressed) which goes into a tmpfs, then use another tmpfs to make it read/write, so the entire OS can run off ram
[17:26:59] clever: and a shutdown script will tar up the r/w tmpfs and save it back to the usb stick
[17:27:08] Korny: it also has this function
[17:27:08] Korny: UDBA means a modification to a branch filesystem manually or directly, e.g. bypassing aufs. While aufs is designed and implemented to be safe after UDBA, it can make yourself and your aufs confused. And some information like aufs inode will be incorrect. For example, if you rename a file on a branch directly, the file on aufs may or may not be accessible through both of old and new name. Because aufs caches various information about
[17:27:08] Korny: the files on branches. And the cache still remains after UDBA.
[17:27:11] clever: the initrd then restores the smaller tar, and the unmodified squashfs
[17:27:44] clever: so the entire system can run from ram, writes to usb at shutdown are minimal, and its persistant even without a disk in it 24/7
