[00:53:22] Korny: I wanted more hard drives
[00:53:33] wagnerrp: i've actually been looking at their hotswap chassis, but there were some comments alluding to the idea you get what you pay for
[00:53:36] jya_: yeah, I don't want any hard drives.
[00:53:39] Korny: So if I build my own rack how wide should the opening be?
[00:53:50] jya_: I have another chassis with 12 hard drives running supernas
[00:53:52] wagnerrp: 19"?
[00:53:58] jm|laptop: :)
[00:54:02] jya_: I'm going the route of splitting drives and processing
[00:54:04] Korny: Isn't that the mounting depth?
[00:54:15] jya_: 19" is the width
[00:54:15] Korny: like where the holes mount up?
[00:54:21] jm|laptop: Lack-widthed
[00:54:22] jya_: it's standard rack size
[00:54:36] Korny: so the opening should be 19"?
[00:54:46] Korny: the actually mounts will be further out
[00:54:51] wagnerrp: i had been looking at one of these... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219033
[00:55:13] wagnerrp: although right now.... i want something vertical
[00:55:20] wagnerrp: something i can mount on a wall like a cabinet
[00:55:46] jya_: I'm a tad warry about norco cooling design with that many disks to be honest
[00:56:06] jya_: the supermicro chassis are far better designed
[00:56:17] jya_: but cost twice as much
[00:56:38] wagnerrp: hence the comments... you get what you pay for
[00:57:02] Korny: That rosewill case i posted has tons of ventilation, but it its not hot swap
[00:57:02] jya_: that rosewill could do
[00:57:20] Korny: and 15 hd spots
[00:57:22] wagnerrp: cooling is just hard to do with front-loading hotswap
[00:57:26] jya_: as there won't be any disks in there (other than a simple ssd for booting); cooling is less of a worry
[00:57:35] wagnerrp: since you're trying to pull air through a backplane
[00:58:01] Korny: jya_: rosewill sells a cheaper 4u one as well thats holds less HD's
[00:58:15] jya_: the supermicro chassis I bought, is very effective at cooling the disk, but you definitely don't want to be anywhere near the case; those 7500rpm fans are sooooo loud
[00:58:27] Korny: I think its rs 4000 or something
[00:58:36] wagnerrp: yeah. we had a couple as workstations at the cluster
[00:59:01] jya_: I put noctua 80mm fan instead
[00:59:11] wagnerrp: core 2 based units... those fbdimms ate up a lot of power
[00:59:54] jya_: and had them running at a constant 1250rpm.. But I was away for the past 4 weeks, and we had big heatwave here, disks temperature went up to 50 degres C... that's very bad for the life of my disks..
[01:00:21] jya_: I just removed the resistor to put the fan at up to 1800rpm ; but they certainly don't put anywhere as much air as the original 80mm fans
[01:00:40] Korny: jya my computers are in my basement, my disks were at 17–20 C while running lol
[01:01:09] jya_: Korny: google has shown that < 20 degres HD is just as bad as > 50 degres
[01:02:15] Korny: Yeah, I'm hoping once they are all in the same case that they will keep each other a bit warmer
[01:03:04] jya_: ok.. that rosewill isn't going to be an option here: http://www.shopbot.com.au/m/?m=RSV-L4000
[01:03:12] jya_: unless I want a tefal pressur cooker
[01:03:14] wagnerrp: are they still using socketed fans?
[01:03:48] jya_: wagnerrp: supermicro? yes... very nicely designed
[01:04:09] wagnerrp: we never had to replace any of the fans, but i always thought that was an interesting design
[01:05:24] jya_: they have several fan types that can be used... so you can get jet engine type, or simply tripe propellers one
[01:05:57] jya_: super noisy (9000rpm), to their lesser type they use in their 4-bay only chassis: 3800rpm
[01:06:12] jya_: still 38dB per fan compare to 18dB with the noctua
[01:06:19] jya_: the 7900rpm were 52dB !
[01:07:47] Korny: wagnerrp: if you're interested in that rosewill(I doubt you are, youc an get it 65 dollars shiped)
[01:08:22] Korny: Take taht back 73 dollars shipped which really isn't bad at all
[01:08:36] wagnerrp: no. i want something i can mount vertically on a wall like a utility cabinet
[01:09:09] Korny: That one has feet
[01:09:31] wagnerrp: feet?
[01:10:49] Korny: yeah you can use it as a case as well
[01:10:57] Korny: rubber feet to stand it up
[01:11:15] wagnerrp: i don't want a case, i want a cabinet, mounted flush to a wall

[18:51:55] sleezio (sleezio!~slee@unaffiliated/sleezio) has joined #mythtv-users
[18:52:47] sleezio: hello, for some reason i'm now unable to watch the same tuner on multiple tvs..i was able to the other night..did i edit a setting thats blocking this? when i try to watch live tv from a 2nd tv, i get 'tuner unavailable'
[18:58:31] sleezio: or should i say watch the same backend on 2 seperate frontends?
[19:07:45] sphery: jm|laptop: did you try adjusting playback color controls? Might be that the driver changed the meanings of specific values for HSB
[19:08:12] sphery: jm|laptop: should be in the menu, somwhere (likely under video?) or Ctrl-G, by default, IIRC
[19:08:22] jm|laptop: sphery: you mean on the telly itself?
[19:08:29] justinh: you might want to look at your deinterlacing settings too
[19:08:45] justinh: jm|laptop: no, on the frontend
[19:09:00] jm|laptop: http://www.mythtv.org/pipermail/mythtv-users/ . . . /359052.html I put this up for more details
[19:09:38] sphery: jm|laptop: no, on mythtv
[19:09:54] justinh: jm|laptop: looks like the colorspace is inverted. Should be simple enough to fix
[19:10:36] jm|laptop: hmm HSB isn't helping much
[19:10:38] sphery: jm|laptop: likely it's a 50 and should be at 0 or 100 or vice-versa-versa-vice
[19:10:57] sphery: "it" = probably H/S controls
[19:11:26] sphery: and try those 3 values for both in different combinations
[19:11:46] ** jm|laptop tries **
[19:12:58] jm|laptop: weird
[19:12:58] sphery: if that's not it, it's likely something more complex (like what justinh mentioned), that may be easy to fix (i.e. if there's a driver setting or something) or difficult (if it involves patching MythTV code)
[19:13:17] sleezio: sphery: any idea why my backend won't allow 2 simultaneous frontends to work?
[19:13:49] jm|laptop: sphery: this does appear to be sort of helping
[19:13:51] sphery: sleezio: "tuner unavailable" means it's in use by something
[19:14:02] jm|laptop: wheeee segfault
[19:14:13] sleezio: no recordings going on, just live tv
[19:14:18] devinheitmueller (devinheitmueller!~devinheit@cpe-67-244-6-56.nyc.res.rr.com) has quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[19:14:35] sphery: I'd guess you had a live tv session or recording that MythTV thinks is still ongoing (likely because of a crash or other improper shutdown)
[19:14:49] jm|laptop: sphery: bit odd though, I select Hue and slider says Colour (14%)
[19:14:52] sphery: sleezio: best suggestion: reboot your all of your backend systems
[19:15:07] sleezio: example..backend is running...i can connect frontend(remote pc) and watch tv, but if i try to watch live tv on same machine with backend, i get 'all tuners are currently busy"
[19:15:08] jm|laptop: Colour takes me to Contrast
[19:15:15] sleezio: i have, same issue
[19:15:46] jm|laptop: Contrast to Brightness
[19:15:56] sphery: hehe, not sure what that's about
[19:16:06] sleezio: if i watch live tv frontend(on same machine as backend) it works, but then my remote pc gets the 'unavailable' message
[19:16:30] sphery: sleezio: and you /do/ have multiple tuners, right?
[19:16:47] sleezio: no, single tuner
[19:16:47] jm|laptop: sphery: and yes if I select Hue (which says Colour) and take it to like ~14% it seems to 'fix' it
[19:16:48] devinheitmueller (devinheitmueller!~devinheit@cpe-67-244-6-56.nyc.res.rr.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[19:16:48] sphery: if not, it's working as expected--one tuner = one viewer
[19:16:53] sleezio: trying to watch same channel
[19:17:04] sleezio: i was able to do this the other night
[19:17:06] sphery: which means all other viewers must watch recordings, instead of "live"
[19:17:15] ** jm|laptop goes to the actual telly for fine-tuning this. VNC is not idea. **
[19:17:15] sphery: and that includes "recordings in progress"
[19:17:25] sphery: which includes "live tv recordings in progress"
[19:18:58] sphery: sleezio: in mythfrontend, Media Library|Watch Recordings, then MENU|Change Group Filter, and select Live TV, then select the current Live TV recording
[19:19:01] sleezio: i wonder how i was able to watch the same backend with 2 seperate frontends(on one tuner) the other night?
[19:20:14] sphery: we don't allow multiple viewers of Live TV sessions because there's an implicit contract allowing control over Live TV viewing (channel changes, etc)
[19:21:10] sphery: and if you're sharing a tuner with someone else, they could (or you could) decide to change channels and make them lose their control (even if you have multiple tuners and it left them on their tuner and put you on a different tuner)
[19:21:39] sleezio: aah, i now see it in recordings, i'm able to watch same channel on 2 frontends now
[19:21:48] sleezio: *changed group filter
[19:21:50] sphery: because of not-intuitively-obvious interactions that will occur with channel surfing and recording starts and ...
[19:22:24] sphery: so we have a rule that Live TV = "sole use of the tuner"
[19:22:34] sphery: (or, actually, the virtual tuner)
[19:22:35] sleezio: gotya
[19:23:00] jarle: In 0.26 mythfrontend would happily play buggy recordings and just skip the buggy part, in 0.27 mythfrontend stops the playback and in console I see "AFD: Unknown audio decoding error", "decoding error", and "eno: Unknown error 541478725 (541478725)". Changing playback profile from VDPAU to Normal changes nothing?
[19:23:33] sphery: if yours is digital tuner and you have multiple channels on the tuned multiplex, then each live tv user can have their own virtual tuner (meaning they can both watch either the same channel or different channels on the same multiplex)
[19:23:34] jarle: "stops the playback" meaning returns to main menu.
[19:23:37] jm|laptop: sphery: would you mind if I c/p your comments in here to the mailing list?
[19:24:07] kisak: has there been many reports of the infinitv 4 having issues with the 3.8 kernel? when I was running 3.8.x on my server, there was a regular driver failure after 33 days of uptime, apparently not fixable without a cold boot
[19:24:08] sphery: (but that actually means you could lose control of your tuner, again, due to complex interactions, but that's a whole other story)

[22:16:44] sphery: Korny: and T-Mo is wonderful because you can use UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access)/GAN (Generic Access Network), which allows using the wifi in your phone rather than using the cell signal--so I always have perfect reception at home (and even at my parents' home, where T-Mo has /absolutely/ no service--or anywhere I have wifi access
[22:18:15] justinh: I thought you needed a special gateway/router thing for that
[22:18:38] sphery: Much better than the other (stupid) approach being used in US (and that the US seems to be pushing on Europe, where UMA/GAN used to be more common)--using femtocells (where you get purpose-/service-specific hardware and plug it in to your high-speed internet to transmit a cell signal at your home--which doesn't help you at all in hotels or random areas)
[22:18:44] sphery: justinh: that's the femtocell approach
[22:19:08] sphery: UMA/GAN is basically VPN'ing a VOIP call through your cell provider
[22:19:26] justinh: never heard of that until now. sounds like a nice idea
[22:20:08] sphery: and the funny thing is that I set my phone to prefer wifi, so when wifi is available, it disables the cell radios (3g for calls and 4g for data) completely, so my battery usage is minimal, even though I told my phone to /always/ keep the wifi active, even while sleeping
[22:21:11] sphery: If I disable wifi and just use the cell signal, I can burn through >50% of the battery while the phone idles for 12hrs (usually around 70%)
[22:21:33] sphery: with wifi/UMA, it will use about 20% while idling for 12hrs
[22:22:48] sphery: it's just too bad that Sprint/AT&T/Verizon have all chosen the "we can't count on the user having wifi in their phone, so we'll let them beg us for a femtocell antenna, and send it to them on our bill" approach
[22:23:30] justinh: wow.
[22:23:40] justinh: and OMG the news is making me feel punchy again

[22:51:58] sphery: can it even decode anything worth outputting via hdmmi?
[22:52:01] justinh: and why, on any platform, is the HD version of a channel not just shown in place of a channel? i.e. so it's always just the channel, in the best format possible
