[09:56:43] stuarta: dunno about the remote tho, i never use them with these cards
[09:57:29] tvin: stuarta: Basic working of some of its functions and complete working of all of its functions are very different things
[09:58:17] stuarta: yes, and since i have never used that card, i can't be more specific.
[09:59:07] stuarta: you may get better answers once north america wakes up ~4hrs time, you may find some users of that card there.
[09:59:27] stuarta: the alternative, is following up on mythtv-users mailing list
[09:59:34] tvin: stuarta: Can I connect a device like a box set or other video source to my video card and use mythtv to record the incoming data? But can a video card even normally receive data like that?

[10:24:06] tvin: dekarl-work: Ok, but I don't remember asking a question that would be pertinent to
[10:24:08] dekarl-work: you can find simple frame grabbers for 5 <currency unit> everywhere http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Bttv_de . . . t848,_bt878) they are ok for watching live (no trick play) without an additional display, but not so ok for recording
[10:25:20] dekarl-work: tvin, sorry, no harm intended
[10:25:57] tvin: dekarl-work: Well then its no good for me, the point would be for me to connect a future cable or satallite box to my PC for DVR functionality
[10:26:59] dekarl-work: correct. they are just a prominent example of "cards without encoder"
[10:28:46] stuarta: ie. crap
[10:28:54] tvin: stuarta: Well I am struggling to see what kind of inputs this card has, but I am pretty sure I don't see HDMI, could I connect say a satellite box to to the HDMI of my video card, and have the Haup card act as a encoder for DVR function of the incoming satallite service?

[10:30:51] stuarta: cable is a different card again

For instance, if you are in Europe, I believe you would need a DVB-S2 card, however if you are in the US, I believe the only way to record satellite is via a HDPVR

[23:10:47] tvin: tgm4883: I don't have a problem connecting the setbox to a card or HDHR
[23:11:05] tgm4883: tvin, do you want HD?
[23:11:22] tvin: It would be nice to have that option in the future
[23:13:54] tgm4883: tvin, you basically have 3 options. 1) Get something like the HDHR and record OTA. You are limited to your local channels. 2) Get a HDHR Prime (if your provider allows cable cards), you can then tune any channel you subscribe to, provided they didn't set the CC flag on it. You can also record 3 channels at once, 3) Get a cable set top box and an HDPVR, you can record any channel you subscribe to, but you can only record one channel for every
[23:13:54] tgm4883: pair of STB and HDPVR you have. You also need to figure out how you are going to change the channel on the STB (I used firewire on mine)
[23:15:58] tvin: Prime doesn't do OTA I think though tgm4883
[23:16:14] tgm4883: tvin, prime does not do OTA, but the HDHR (non-prime) does
[23:16:47] tvin: what is CC flag?
[23:17:23] tgm4883: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copy_Control_Information
[23:21:08] tgm4883: alright, gotta run. Back in an hour or so
