[05:57:22] buu: Hey, can anyone point me at detailed documentation of how the 'videos' plugin/mode works? Or failing that, where the source lives in the tree?
[05:59:24] [R]: there is a huge wiki page on it...
[06:00:39] buu: You mean http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Video_Library ?
[06:01:58] [R]: yes
[06:03:32] buu: I was looking for slightly more detailed specifics, such as how it decides what to display, what operations it performs, how it looks up metadata, etc.
[06:04:18] [R]: it uses mythmetadatalookup for metadata
[06:04:25] [R]: "what to display"?
[06:04:26] [R]: huh?
[06:04:32] [R]: and it plays video files... hence the name
[06:04:40] buu: [R]: If you select 'videos' how does it decide what to display?
[06:04:48] wagnerrp: no. the video library pulls metadata internally
[06:04:48] [R]: decide?
[06:04:52] wagnerrp: mythmetadata is only for recordings
[06:04:52] buu: Decide
[06:04:55] [R]: ah
[06:05:16] wagnerrp: it all uses the same library and scripts though
[06:05:22] buu: wagnerrp: So far I've noticed it uses the videometadata* tables
[06:05:30] buu: But does it just look in that database for videos?
[06:05:37] buu: Or does it scan the file system then do look ups?
[06:05:46] wagnerrp: it performs scans when you tell it to
[06:05:54] wagnerrp: but otherwise, it just pulls the scanned list from the database
[06:06:11] buu: So if I go to videos -> movie folder, it should just be displaying a select * from videometadata?
[06:06:49] wagnerrp: is the 'movie' folder an actual folder? or did you put it in one of the tv/movie metadata generated view?
[06:07:12] wagnerrp: either way, yes. it's pulling the content list from the database, not the filesystem
[06:07:26] buu: wagnerrp: It was an actual folder I scanned
[06:07:34] buu: I have /videos/folder/movies
[06:08:41] buu: wagnerrp: Where does it store the 'top level' structure? I.e the initial folders it scanned?
[06:08:57] buu: And why does it think movie.srt is a movie file?
[06:14:12] buu: And why is there a videometadatagenre table
[06:14:20] ** buu mutters **
[06:14:48] wagnerrp: videometadatagenre is a one-to-many cross-reference to the videometadata table
[06:14:57] wagnerrp: it does not store folders, only content
[06:15:20] buu: Oh, multiple genres.
[06:15:30] wagnerrp: and the "top level" definitions are the paths you defined for the Videos storage group in mythtv-setup
[06:16:02] buu: wagnerrp: I didn't define storage groups, I left it as a 'videos dir' setting, with two child directories, tv and movies.
[06:16:07] wagnerrp: as for why it thinks an .srt is a video, all i can think is that you fiddled with the built-in filetype filters
[06:16:14] buu: I totally didn't.
[06:16:32] wagnerrp: the old VideoStartupDir? the one you define in mythfrontend?
[06:16:52] wagnerrp: that reminds me, i really need to get that garbage rewritten and removed before i go out of town again
[06:18:14] buu: wagnerrp: Yup.
[06:18:52] buu: Should I define each folder as a separate video group?
[06:19:08] wagnerrp: each folder should be a subset of the full tree
[06:19:31] wagnerrp: the folders are merged back together so they appear as one single storage array
[06:24:05] buu: wagnerrp: I'm not sure I understand you. I have /storage that contains foo bar tv movies; should I define /storage/tv and /storage/movies as separate storage groups using mythsetup?
[06:25:00] wagnerrp: no, just define /storage
[06:25:20] wagnerrp: you would only define multiple paths if you had multiple partitions, such as /storage1/ and /storage2/
[06:25:36] wagnerrp: each containing one of more of foo/, bar/, tv/, and movies/
[06:26:06] buu: But foo contains things that are not videos?
[06:26:07] wagnerrp: /storage1/ and /storage2/ would be merged into one view, and you would only see their combined contents
[06:26:43] wagnerrp: well then make another directory for the Video Library, and symlink in only those directories you actually want included
[06:26:54] buu: wagnerrp: Also when I ran 'scan the directory' it asked me to confirm between two metadata choices roughly 18,000,000 times.
[06:27:07] buu: That got old.
[06:27:24] wagnerrp: it shouldn't do that by default
[06:27:27] buu: wagnerrp: Well, that's what I did, just using the 'old' videolibrary directory config.
[06:27:40] wagnerrp: there is an option to run a bulk metadata scan, through the menu
[06:27:53] wagnerrp: and there is an option to have that scan run automatically any time you scan for contents
[06:28:32] buu: Ok
[06:29:39] buu: wagnerrp: So, in my set up, I have tv and movie folder, when I go to videos->watch videos I get a 'top level menu' containing two choices: videos and movies. Where is that stored?
[06:30:09] wagnerrp: where is what stored?
[06:30:57] buu: The two items that are being displayed by the video plugin?
[06:31:03] buu: How does it know to show me those two folders
[06:31:09] buu: Is that purely based on the existing folder structure?
[06:31:32] wagnerrp: not a plugin any longer, but that's irrelevant
[06:31:49] wagnerrp: yes. the default is to show the folder structure of whatever paths you defined and scanned into the database
[06:33:54] buu: Ok.. A) does it store those two folders it scanned someplace in the database? and B) Once I choose a top level folder, does it then show me the child directories of that folder or does it ask the database for the children? And if it asks the db, where does it look that up?
[06:34:27] buu: I'm trying to understand exactly how videos generates the list of stuff it shows on the ui
[06:34:39] wagnerrp: no. the folders are not stored in the database. only the video files
[06:35:06] wagnerrp: the tree is generated based off the stored path of the video files, relative to the root of the storage group
[06:35:40] wagnerrp: if you have a physical folder in the path, but no content beneath that folder, it will not show up
[06:35:55] buu: wagnerrp: So could I create a completely arbitrary tree in the database that has no relationship to the actual filesystem?
[06:36:02] buu: tree = list of files
[06:36:45] wagnerrp: well it can't be arbitrary, since it obviously needs to know the path of the videos in order to access them
[06:37:09] buu: Well, yeah.. does it use the filename to both construct the tree and to locate the file?
[06:37:10] wagnerrp: however, there are several metadata generated tree structures available through the 'm' menu
[06:37:32] wagnerrp: or, if you're up to a bit of coding, you can write in your own custom views
[06:37:37] buu: Ah?
[06:37:41] buu: This sounds promising =]
[06:38:26] disputin (disputin!~sean@65.102.58.17) has quit (Quit: Leaving.)
[06:38:39] buu: I was playing with the alternative views but sadly most of them seem to just display 'every single file' in a giant list, which wasn't terribly helpful.

[06:42:43] buu: wagnerrp: I've got some metadata..
[06:45:52] wagnerrp: i need to see about making those dynamic at some point...
[06:49:04] buu: Mmm c++ and xml
[06:54:10] buu: wagnerrp: So is there anyway to add custom views that don't involve re-patching the source every time you upgrade?
[06:54:36] wagnerrp: you can use the folder view, and symlinks
[06:55:54] buu: Fair enough
[06:56:37] buu: wagnerrp: Just to go back to an earlier conversation, videometadata has 'filename' which contains foo/movie/movie.avi; is this the exact data the video browser uses to generate the list of folders it shows?
[06:56:49] wagnerrp: yes
[06:56:59] buu: Like it scans for foo/*; then generates a folder named 'movie' containing everything that matches foo/movie/*
[06:57:16] buu: Hrm.
[06:57:34] wagnerrp: it should show 'foo' in the base path when you enter the video library
[06:57:40] buu: right
[06:57:51] buu: Then I select 'foo' and it shows me 'movie'
[06:57:58] buu: Then I select movie and it shows me movie.avi
[06:58:13] buu: Except what it actually does at that point is look up the metadata that matches foo/movie/movie.avi and display that?
[06:58:38] wagnerrp: no. it pulls everything at once, and generates the whole tree at that point
[06:58:50] wagnerrp: it doesn't load progressively
[06:58:56] buu: oh
[06:59:03] buu: Ok.
[06:59:22] buu: So there's no way to merely manipulate the database to get it to display 'foo2' but actually play the file 'foo'
[06:59:43] wagnerrp: change the title
[07:00:01] wagnerrp: and possibly subtitle
[07:00:01] buu: wagnerrp: Right =]
[07:00:08] buu: I meant more the structure it displays =]
[07:00:34] wagnerrp: no, the structures cannot be manipulated
[07:00:47] wagnerrp: (except of course by changing the folder structure, or writing a new view)
[07:00:57] buu: Ok
[07:04:51] buu: wagnerrp: Is BuildFocusList where it assigns the loaded video data to the xml view?
[07:05:19] wagnerrp: honestly, i don't know the frontend side of this thing very well
[07:06:42] buu: Ok, I appreciate the details.

[23:50:03] Baylink: QUERY: So for whacky reasons I don't want to get into until I have no choice, I've just uninstalled PulseAudio on SuSE 12 from under my 0.26. And so, of course, now Pulse is the *only* think my Setup->Audio knows about after I do a Rescan, even though alsamixer can see the card and devices just fine. Huh?
[23:50:30] Baylink: I've never had to dick around with audio config in 7 or 8 years, so I'm a bit list.
