[01:08:36] Sharky112065: haven not updated backend or frontend or done any Debian updates since May of this year. Guess I'll do those updates tomorrow and see if it fixes it. Dont know where to ask and been asking here for 2 days. I'm off to watch the news, I'll check back here again in a bit.
[01:09:13] Sharky112065: also deleted frontend cache directories and started frontend back up. Did not fix it.

[02:18:20] Sisk: Is there a way to have mythfrontend start automatically and still have the backend on the same machine shut down when it's idle? Mythwelcome doesn't seem to be working for that.
[02:23:27] BillK (BillK!~BillK-Fre@203-59-151-238.dyn.iinet.net.au) has quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
[02:29:34] kisak: you seem to be misunderstanding the purpose of that feature
[02:30:03] kisak: it's to make the entire computer running the backend go to sleep when there's nothing to do
[02:30:13] kisak: not the application
[02:31:02] Sisk: Yeah, that's what I'm wanting to do, but my frontend is on the same machine. Because my frontend automatically starts on boot it never goes to sleep.
[02:31:18] Sisk: At least I'm assuming it's because my frontend automatically starts.
[02:36:00] skd5aner: sphery: saw your post that you're finally getting a cable sub...
[02:36:49] skd5aner: sphery: funny though, that you're going to be willing to pay for a cable-co DVR and not simply hook up an HD-PVR to an STB... payback period would probably be about a year to do so.
[02:39:20] skd5aner: sphery: Also, you're the 4'th "key" developer I've heard say they use the cable/sat company's DVR... that's kind of scarey to think about

[12:17:30] stuartm: import, as in the files are local?
[12:17:53] stuartm: not yet, but it's on the roadmap
[12:19:53] wizbit: i just want to import some radio net stations
[12:20:50] wizbit: i wish mythmusic would behave like watch recordings
[12:20:58] wizbit: have all the albums on the left and the tracks on the right
[12:21:04] wizbit: nice and easy
[12:22:14] stuartm: wizbit: it can
[12:22:34] stuartm: that's the playlist editor view (just needs theming that way)
[12:24:34] stuartm: wizbit: Menu > Switch View > Playlist Editor – Tree
[12:25:25] stuartm: as for playing net radio, select Listen to radio stream > Menu > Add Stream
[12:26:12] stuartm: stick the m3u url into the URL box, give it a name and you're done
[12:38:39] stuartm: personally, I have 1500 albums, just showing "Album" "Tracks" would be useless, especially since I can't remember half of the album names
[12:39:07] stuartm: I don't even use that layout in Watch Recordings, instead I group by category (Drama, Film, Comedy etc)
[12:41:11] stuartm: wizbit: in fact you might want the 'Playlist gallery' view, if you like browsing by Album
[12:41:34] wizbit: ok thanks
[12:41:42] wizbit: i have a radiostations.m3u

[12:58:36] GEEGEEGEE: I dont get TV from virgin media
[12:58:38] GEEGEEGEE: i get it from sky
[12:59:41] stuartm: well same deal, only Sky's copy protection is unbreakable anyway
[13:01:38] stuartm: but the topic of card sharing is strictly against MythTV policy on this IRC channel, or official mailing lists, MythTV does not exist to circumvent Terms of Service or to break the law – there are plenty of projects that don't take that ethical stand

[16:01:36] wagnerrp: do you need hardware decoding?
[16:01:45] wagnerrp: any halfway decent processor can get by just fine with software decoding
[16:02:05] stuartm: skd5aner: "Record all showings" + "This day and time" filter
[16:02:41] wagnerrp: oh... 3650 is on an atom
[16:02:59] stuartm: atom != halfway decent
[16:03:02] skd5aner: stuartm: wouldn't "this day and time" be wrong? I want to find 1 a day, not a specific airing a day
[16:03:35] stuartm: you'd have to ask gigem
[16:03:53] skd5aner: For example, SportsCenter airs about 20 times a day across multiple networks... I just want to find 1 of them within a window...
[16:04:00] skd5aner: my custom rule gives the window
[16:04:59] skd5aner: stuartm: ironically enough, when I went in to edit it via mythweb, I selected "Find and record one showing of this title each day." on the cutom rule, and now mythfrontend shows that as an option on the rule
[16:05:21] skd5aner: and this is a rule that's been around for like 5 years in my system
[16:05:25] BLZbubba: yes i need hardware decoding
[16:05:58] skd5aner: stuartm: it has always been set up as a find and record one showing of this title each day rule, but when I attempted ot edit it, the options were more limited
[16:06:00] wagnerrp: you already have this atom?
[16:06:07] wagnerrp: or you're looking to purchase one?
[16:06:35] stuartm: skd5aner: yes, several less used rule types were dropped in favour of 'basic rule' + 'filter'

[16:06:51] BLZbubba: i am researching the state of non-nvidia hardware decoding

[16:07:14] wagnerrp: so why not just purchase something with a halfway decent processor?

[16:20:17] stuartm: skd5aner: I think it was a choice between continually expanding the rule types to accommodate all the demands from (a small minority) of users, or to introduce a flexible system like the filters – once the filters were in place, there was an overlap, even incompatibility between the hardcoded 'this day' rules and the filter based

[19:29:36] skd5aner: stuartm: I know you can also add it to the list of shows via the "view" – but not sure I care for that since it then looses the hiearchy of shows and just shows them as a flat list based on date recorded

[19:38:53] stuartm: skd5aner: yeah, that's because the recording group stuff was poorly implemented, they aren't stored in their own table, only as an attribute of a recording – no recordings and the group ceases to exist
[19:39:24] skd5aner: stuartm: yea, I was looking for a table in the DB, when I realized it's only stored as an attribute in the record table, and I'm assuming the recordings table
[19:39:41] skd5aner: so, not relational
[19:40:04] stuartm: yet, bizarrely when the option of passwording them was added, a standalone table was created just to store the password ... needs fixing, and probably will get fixed in the next week because it makes it impossible to handle recgroups properly in the mythweb replacement

[21:05:51] stuartm: I seem to remember there was a mode of the nvidia driver that will mirror the screen on two different monitors, although if they are different aspect ratios you'll have stretching or letter/pillar boxing

[21:22:47] buu: So why is streaming live (hd) tv so much more stressful than playing a regular mkv file over the network?
[21:23:58] stuartm: depends what you mean by regular mkv, matroska is just a container, the video within could use any codec, any encoding profile and any bitrate
[21:25:05] stuartm: however broadcast TV uses a much higher bitrate on average than anything you might view online or download online (therefore more bandwidth)
[21:25:47] buu: For example this file: Stream #0:0(und): Video: h264 (High) (avc1 / 0x31637661), yuv420p, 1920x1080 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9], 2109 kb/s, 23.98 fps, 23.98 tbr, 24k tbn, 47.95 tbc (default)
[21:25:52] stuartm: there's also some small overhead with livetv because of the need to advise the frontend of the ever-changing file size, key-frame position maps etc
[21:26:44] stuartm: buu: that's a ridiculously low bitrate (quality) video – 2Mbps vs 9–18Mbps for broadcast HD, and 30Mbps for blu-ray
[21:28:03] wagnerrp: yeah, that's utter garbage
[21:28:06] buu: stuartm: I think you're missinteprerting that, it should be 16mbps
[21:28:08] stuartm: in fact that's a lower bitrate than a lot of broadcast SD
[21:28:26] wagnerrp: nope, kb is kilobit
[21:28:37] zombor (zombor!~zombor__@kohana/developer/zombor) has joined #mythtv-users
[21:29:19] buu: I suppose h264 is vastly more efficient than mpeg2
[21:29:41] stuartm: buu: we're talking about H.264, broadcast H.264 is 9–18Mbps
[21:30:18] wagnerrp: roughly double
[21:30:20] stuartm: and blu-ray is usually a minimum of 30Mbps but is often higher

[21:30:58] wagnerrp: meaning... a 16Mbps HD MPEG2 broadcast would only be 8Mbps HD H264
[21:31:00] stuartm: in the US broadcast HD is currently mpeg2, at a bitrate of 17Mbps iirc
[21:31:34] stuartm: elsewhere in the world broadcast HD uses H.264
[21:31:49] buu: Regardless the video quality of this file is much higher than the broadcast tv over my cable, for example
[21:31:59] buu: But there's no way to get mythtv to transcode live tv right?
[21:32:25] wagnerrp: well... you can encode live tv if you're receiving raw
[21:32:36] stuartm: well unfortunately a lot of broadcasters are using crap encoding hardware that they bought for thousands of dollars in 1995
[21:32:37] wagnerrp: but no, it will not transcode anything that is already encoded
[21:33:03] stuartm: the quality isn't what it should be for the given bitrates :(
[21:33:09] buu: Is there some way I can tell what its sending me?
[21:34:01] stuartm: and in the US I believe the situation is worse as some affiliates are messing with the stream to insert their own banners etc which only degrades the picture quality
[21:34:05] buu: I'm trying to get my frontend to display 1080p live tv at acceptable quality
[21:34:17] buu: And I'm getting kind of tearing/frames/jittery.. I'm not quite sure how to describe it
[21:34:26] buu: The network is wireless but 30MBps+
[21:35:23] zombor_ (zombor_!~zombor__@kohana/developer/zombor) has quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
[21:36:07] buu: The frontend hardware is an old i3–350m, which isn't great but seems to work fine on all of these encoded video files

[21:36:30] buu: wagnerrp: benchmarked..
[21:36:43] buu: Its typically closer to 50MBps but either way
[21:36:54] stuartm: there are other factors to consider other than raw bitrate, different encoding methods/profile can requires much more CPU to decode, and broadcast in particular often uses high key-frame intervals which ironically aren't very tolerant to stuff like packet loss
[21:37:17] wagnerrp: and your loss/jitter?

[22:53:17] stuartm: some cards feature a built-in amplifier, but it's not enabled by the driver by default, I've no idea if that's the case with the HVR-1250 but if it is, that would explain the signal strength issue

[23:56:37] jevidl: I think it depends on what format recorded TV is streamed to it… if the built in hardware video support can handle it, then it should be fine. If the CPU is needed to do playback, I could see it having trouble
[23:57:57] Clam: yeah idk
[23:58:20] Clam: i have tried dabbling a little into mythbuntu but i think im going to retreat back to the windows 7 camp
[23:59:50] Clam: at least their stuff works.
