[02:49:53] joki (joki!~joki@p54861629.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) has joined #mythtv-users
[02:50:12] wagnerrp: about a year and a half
[02:50:21] wagnerrp: a little under that
[02:50:41] Korny: yeah, my current unraid box is running on hold hardware and sucking down about 120 watts with an orginal a6 triple core POS
[02:50:59] wagnerrp: how much of that is the system, and how much is the hard drives?
[02:51:07] wagnerrp: do you have it configured to spin down when idle?
[02:51:10] Korny: DRives all all spun down
[02:51:12] zombor (zombor!~zombor__@kohana/developer/zombor) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[02:51:24] wagnerrp: that reminds me, i should set that up on my server
[02:51:24] Korny: when its all spun up its about 150 or so
[02:51:41] Korny: my drives are all WD reds except for 2 seagates
[02:51:48] wagnerrp: why?
[02:51:54] Korny: Why what?
[02:52:00] wagnerrp: why Reds?
[02:52:14] Korny: GOt em cheap and on sale for the same price as greens
[02:52:16] wagnerrp: those "NAS" drives are only useful with hardware RAID
[02:53:19] Korny: What really gets me is why is transfering over gig network using 50–60% of a cpu core :/
[02:53:30] Korny: I know the a6 is a POS but really that bad?
[02:53:46] wagnerrp: are you doing it over ssh or something?
[02:53:51] Korny: no
[02:55:14] Korny: odd... I did it over an NFS connection but according to unraid the main proccess eating up cpu is shfs... which Shfs is a simple and easy to use Linux kernel module which allows you to mount remote filesystems using a plain shell (ssh) connection. When using shfs, you can access all remote files just like the local ones, only the access is governed through the transport security of ssh. Shfs supports some nice features:
[02:55:45] wagnerrp: such as... "eating vast amounts of cycles"
[02:58:26] SpeedEvil: sshfs also does encryption
[02:58:34] SpeedEvil: which can't be turned off
[02:58:49] wagnerrp: you can select it
[02:59:01] wagnerrp: arcfour is about the lightest weight crypto ssh supports
[02:59:07] SpeedEvil: true
[02:59:20] wagnerrp: gives you another 30% better transfer rates over the standard encryption
[03:04:38] ** croccydile discovers another error where he forgot to point to the changed location of his tuning script... whoops **
[03:12:31] croccydile: Korny: I forget who did a study about that but something about saving power on the desktop was apparently a fallacy
[03:12:39] croccydile: It depends on your electricity rates really
[03:12:59] wagnerrp: one watt consumed for one year is roughly one dollar
[03:13:13] wagnerrp: (at standard North American utility rates)
[03:13:32] croccydile: wagnerrp: The red has the idle timer disabled by defailt, and raid friendly... green you can disable it with the wdidle3 utility but they are known to not be raid friendly
[03:13:54] wagnerrp: the "red" drive has something called "time limited error recovery"
[03:14:04] wagnerrp: a normal hard drive will try exhaustively to recover data
[03:14:16] wagnerrp: re-reading the same track many many times, to try to get a good read
[03:14:19] croccydile: Not sure about the cost difference
[03:14:29] croccydile: Errr.. worthyness of cost difference
[03:14:49] wagnerrp: this results in unresponsiveness, which a hardware RAID will interpret as a failed drive, and reject it, compromising the rest of the array for an otherwise perfectly functional hard drive
[03:15:05] wagnerrp: TLER aborts that recovery before the RAID rejects the hard drive
[03:15:27] wagnerrp: it's one minor change in the firmware
[03:15:37] croccydile: I think at at $30 price difference
[03:17:18] croccydile: my mini-itx is kind of a ghetto mismatching of just drives thrown in... 1 black, 1 green, 1 red, 2 seagate :p

Look like it is going to be a (or more) moderately powerful x86 box that is optimized for living room operation. On top of that, value says in a FAQ: "Can I hack this box? Run another OS? Change the hardware? Install my own software? Use it to build a robot?.... Sure." Sounds like it could be a really nice frontend.
