[00:17:15] croccydile: I have no idea if its possible to just... move... your recording storage
[00:19:11] MrShake: it is
[00:19:14] MrShake: been there done that
[00:21:09] wagnerrp: mythtv only tracks the locations of your recordings relative to the root of your storage group paths
[00:21:28] wagnerrp: so as long as the recording is found in one of those paths, mythtv will be able to find and access it
[00:22:10] MrShake: ding ding ding
[00:22:40] croccydile: Ah ok, so if I shut off the backend, move all the files and just... set the path to the new folder it should just work?
[00:23:05] MrShake: yep
[00:23:17] MrShake: I had to upgrade to a bigger HardDrive, and did exactly that
[00:23:23] wagnerrp: you could even set the path to both folders, and record to both of them simultaneously
[00:23:39] croccydile: *Nods*
[00:23:47] croccydile: This 3TB once its clear ill move the recordings to that

[01:00:31] croccydile: Oh noes :x
[01:00:54] biffhero: yep, I'm shutting down the backend now and doing "cat /dev/video0 > /tmp/foo.mpg" now
[01:01:09] croccydile: what t00ner
[01:01:23] biffhero: hauppage, I think a 250
[01:01:28] biffhero: ivtv driver.
[01:01:47] croccydile: Ooooh old school
[01:01:52] biffhero: I rebooted the backend about an ago to show The Boss what she could do to fix this.
[01:02:04] biffhero: but obviously that didn't help.
[01:02:15] biffhero: I used to do an 'rmmod' thing every once in a while...
[01:02:29] croccydile: There is that ivtv-tune thing I think to manually attempt to tune
[01:03:23] biffhero: oh, what's ivtv-tune?
[01:03:40] croccydile: I think its part of the v4l2 utils or something
[01:03:51] croccydile: You can tune outside of mythtv to check to see if the tuner actually works
[01:03:55] biffhero: yep, it's static. maybe I should reboot the STB?
[01:04:06] biffhero: well, I tune via the "channel" script and a serial cable.
[01:04:34] biffhero: oh, I see, use ivtv as a tv tuner? But that won't get anything, since Comcast is all digital around here now.
[01:05:20] biffhero: ok, rebooted the stb

[01:11:24] biffhero: thank you google!

[01:12:39] croccydile: Well the 250 does have a better comb filter than the 150 or 500
[01:12:48] croccydile: However it would be a very good idea to try s-video if possible
[01:12:54] croccydile: Or at least composite... RF is horrifying

[06:11:33] lautriv: i found a small problem with the detetcion of drives for recordings. if one has a drive mounted via NFS it gets correctly noticed as one drive, even if multiple backends mount the drive. not so on e.g. iscsi, where they count up as different drives. not that hard but may confuse the balancing decisions.

[11:14:09] wagnerrp: lautriv: the detection mechanism is supposed to work across multiple machines, with a bit of fuzzing factor to account for discrepancies when the drives are being written to
[11:19:52] lautriv: wagnerrp, if i had 3 drives on NFS, it showed 3 drives with multiple machine@mount entries, the very same setup but with iscsi shows me 6 drives. i have not really a problem with this but the consideration where to write may be a bit confused.
[11:20:14] lotia (lotia!~lotia@l.monkey.org) has quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[11:20:44] wagnerrp: it doesn't show independent drives, it shows independent partitions
[11:21:01] wagnerrp: and with iscsi, you must have had separate partitions for each machine that had them mounted
[11:21:12] wagnerrp: or else, you were using some funky parallel filesystem
[11:21:42] lautriv: distributed locking and caching.
[11:21:56] stuarta: which filesystem?
[11:22:20] lautriv: right now testing with XFS and ext4
[11:22:28] wagnerrp: yeah, that's horribly broken
[11:22:50] wagnerrp: you can't simply wave a magic wand and mount XFS or EXT4 on two different machines simultaneously
[11:22:58] stuarta: well nothing wrong with xfs and ext4 on a *single* node
[11:23:30] wagnerrp: you _can_ mount the same iscsi disk on two different machines, if those two machines are mounting two separate partitions on that single disk
[11:23:40] stuarta: on mulitple nodes you *will* corrupt the filesystem metadata, if you are lucky fsck can fix it
[11:23:48] wagnerrp: or, if you are using a special filesystem that allows multiple simultaneous access
[11:23:56] stuarta: such as GFS2
[11:24:09] stuarta: nfs is much easier
[11:24:54] ** stuarta deals with these sort of breakages every day **
[11:25:31] lautriv: stuarta, i was on NFS for decades but recent versions crash if you have NUMA + more than 30MB/s
[11:25:50] stuarta: interesting
[11:25:55] stuarta: numa on the server?

[11:32:57] wagnerrp: as in, your backend is a multi-socket server?
[11:33:21] lautriv: yes.
[11:33:51] wagnerrp: even still NUMA on x86 systems does not prevent access to memory, merely latency
[11:34:04] wagnerrp: it should have no effect on the software running on it, aside from speed
[11:34:14] wagnerrp: unless they are poorly written and prone to race conditions
[11:34:45] ** stuarta wonders if there is a bugzilla for such things **
[11:35:04] croppa (croppa!~stuart@CPE-120-146-137-99.static.nsw.bigpond.net.au) has quit ()
[11:35:49] wagnerrp: whatever the case, the duplicate filesystem detection works off free and total space
[11:36:03] wagnerrp: the consequence is that use of ZFS and multiple datasets is completely broken
[11:36:34] wagnerrp: and if you're using network mounted filesystems, in parallel, there is a chance they can get out of sync on free space, and report too far a difference to be recognized as the same filesystem
[11:37:02] ** stuarta is still fascinated by the possibility that there are nfs issues on numa systems **
[11:37:40] stuarta: lautriv: you have a `numactl --show` output from that server?
[11:38:18] wagnerrp: well i'm out... i'm already 15 minutes late if i leave now
[11:38:27] stuarta: wagnerrp: maybe for nfs volumes we should pull the fsid
[11:38:59] ** stuarta ponders using `blkid` for volume identification **
[11:39:07] lautriv: stuarta, actually not, changing a lot these days. even worse, they have also issues on latest XFS, from what i could get it is about deep stacking of bot.
[11:39:11] wagnerrp: we could do a lot of things, and that's been an issue i've had on my list for a while
[11:39:18] wagnerrp: although primarily to make it work properly with ZFS
[11:39:51] stuarta: lautriv: who has issues on latest XFS ?

[11:40:50] stuarta: NFS v4, yeah, that is still settling down
[11:44:27] stuarta: NFS v3 is pretty rock solid. so i'd use that
[11:46:15] stuarta: so on f19 blkid returns nothing as a user. that is unhelpful
[11:51:52] stuarta: oooo `lsblk --fs
[11:56:35] lautriv: yes, V3 is somewhat stable but even slower and has other problems like user-mapping.
[11:56:55] stuarta: either way, neither blkid or lsblk do nfs, not surprising really

[12:14:04] GreyFoxx: There is a script that comes with the myth source that will rename them by the show title and date. Can't remember it's name offhand
[12:15:30] GreyFoxx: that or it symlinks "pretty" names to the regular name
[12:15:36] GreyFoxx: mythlink.pl I think it was called
[12:32:33] lautriv: will have a look when done with upgrading, actually i wonder about some performance-wise changes since my showings are always streamed from backend and i may reduce the load with some read from alternate location. however that might be a DB issue.
