[18:44:08] justdave: I just had my disk fill up because something was apaprently writing to it faster than the auto-purge could keep up, so it's possible something somewhere got written out incompletely at some point... any idea what else might trigger that error that I can reinstall/fix?
[18:44:28] dahlSTROM|sleep is now known as dahlSTROM
[18:48:46] sphery: justdave: sounds like you have one or more crashed mysql tables
[18:49:28] sphery: specifically, I'd guess the time zone table (which is not a MythTV/mythconverg database table--but part of your mysql database)
[18:49:46] sphery: so you need to run mysqlcheck as mysql root user against at least the mysql database
[18:49:57] sphery: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysqlcheck.html
[18:50:10] sphery: (where the db_name will be mysql)
[18:50:21] justdave: credits table in mythconverg is marked as crashed
[18:50:28] sphery: or, better--because it seems to be really messed up, use --all-databases
[18:50:32] sphery: and mysql root user
[18:50:33] justdave: nothing in mysql is.
[18:50:46] justdave: but yeah, running a full check is better than just looking at status :)
[18:50:55] sphery: optimize_mythdb.pl will fix crashed mythconverg database files
[18:51:09] sphery: "fix" meaning "make them not crashed" (data integrity not guaranteed)
[18:51:18] sphery: but, on the bright side, credits isn't too important
[18:51:37] sphery: and have it fix the problems it finds, too
[18:51:56] sphery: (have mysqlcheck fix the problems in non-mythconverg tables, that is)
[18:52:17] justdave: if I delete the credits table will the optimize script recreate it?
[18:53:08] justdave: asking because...
[18:53:08] justdave: mythconverg.credits
[18:53:08] justdave: warning  : Number of rows changed from 0 to 522272
[18:53:09] justdave: status  : OK
[18:53:16] justdave: that's probably not good. :)
[18:53:20] sphery: no, it can't recreate it
[18:53:32] justdave: I guess if it's not crashed anymore I can just truncate the table
[18:53:34] sphery: never drop any mythtv tables or you will completely destroy the schema
[18:54:03] sphery: no, it's saying that the data file metadata said there were 0 rows in there, when there are actually 500K
[18:54:06] justdave: or maybe that number of rows is correct
[18:54:09] sphery: so it fixed it so it coudl see them
[18:54:12] sphery: and that's probably about right
[18:54:18] justdave: I get 522k rows that look like real data when I dump the table
[18:54:41] sphery: if it has some that were previously deleted, they will be deleted, again, during normal updates from mythbackend
[18:54:44] justdave: must be for the tv guide data
[18:54:46] sphery: yes
[18:54:54] justdave: all dated with in the last 2 weeks
[18:55:00] justdave: which is about how long the guide data lasts
[18:56:07] justdave: ok, now when I try to start the backend, I get nothing logged at all instead of the error about timezones...
[18:56:25] justdave: (and it still doesn't start)
[18:56:45] sphery: start it in a console without your start script and look at the stdout/err output
[18:56:59] sphery: i.e. start it as the mythtv user with mythbackend
[18:57:06] sphery: or mythbackend.real, if you're on *buntu
[18:57:53] justdave: ok, still giving me the timezone error in the console output
[18:57:54] justdave: 2013-08–22 14:57:41.418846 E MySQL time zone support is missing. Please install it and try again. See 'mysql_tzinfo_to_sql' for assistance.
[18:57:55] sphery: but sounds like the starting attempts have messed up your log file configuration or something
[18:58:21] justdave: oh, wait. I need to start it as the mythtv user
[18:58:26] sphery: and you did a mysqlcheck -uroot -p --all-databases
[18:58:27] sphery: ?
[18:58:28] justdave: started it as root. oops.
[18:58:37] sphery: and starting as root will mess up log files
[18:58:52] sphery: (can break permissions and such)
[18:59:00] sphery: might have to clean that up later
[18:59:05] justdave: couldn't find the log files because it was looking for a config file that didn't exist in /root/.mythtv
[19:00:12] justdave: still same error starting as mythtv user, but I also notice this:
[19:00:12] justdave: 2013-08–22 14:59:26.608975 N Reading locale defaults from /usr/share/mythtv//locales/en_us.xml
[19:00:20] justdave: any chance that file being corrupted would cause it?
[19:00:30] sphery: ah, ok
[19:00:53] sphery: no, locale defaults are only used when you have no settings for the host
[19:01:40] justdave: and just for completeness, mysqlcheck --all-databases says everything is OK now
[19:01:50] sphery: as mysql root user
[19:01:52] sphery: -uroot
[19:01:54] justdave: yep
[19:01:58] sphery: otherwise, it's not checking everything
[19:01:59] sphery: ok
[19:02:00] sphery: just making sure
[19:02:20] sphery: if it's still not working, something is very messed up in your mysql database
[19:03:05] sphery: you may want to back up your mythconverg database ( http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Database_Backup_and_Restore ), and may have to do something to redo everything for mysql
[19:03:30] sphery: I'm sure your package manager has something it can do to reset things, but I don't know how to do any of that
[19:04:11] sphery: "reset" meaning basically "delete the existing database data files and re-init a brand new/empty data store so you can then restore your mythconverg backup to it"
[19:05:25] justdave: user and db tables look intact in mysql and are the only auth-related tables that have any data in them. Guessing I can back those up along with the other databases then wipe and reinstall mysql and put those back.
[19:06:50] sphery: I'd be very careful about backing up/restoring any part (versus complete) mysql database
[19:07:03] sphery: I'd recommend just reconfiguring it all
[19:07:12] sphery: again, though, use what the package system gives you
[19:07:15] sphery: it's all been tested
[19:07:33] sphery: and doesn't require tons of work figuring out mysql garbage
[19:30:40] ikevin: mysql normaly can repaire crashed table, so, some corrupted data can be lost
[19:31:18] ikevin: https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/fr/repair-table.html
[19:33:28] ikevin: (replace 'fr' by 'en' in the url if you would it in english)
[19:36:23] ikevin: myth have some table using myisam who can be repaired with no data lost
[19:36:47] ikevin: inodb table is more harder to repair

[19:46:01] justdave: oh, heh. my system is ancient and has been getting upgraded over time...
[19:46:30] justdave: my mysql config pre-dates when Ubuntu/Debian started including a backdoor admin password for use by dpkg when doing setup stuff
[19:47:01] justdave: the initscript for mythtv now attempts to use that dpkg access to ping the server to see if it's up
[19:47:24] justdave: and since the debian-sys-maint user doesn't exist, it thinks mysql isn't running
[19:47:53] ikevin: oh, ok
[19:48:26] ikevin: you can run "mysqld_safe" to start mysql without debian check

[19:50:31] justdave: I just copied the existing username/pass from that debian.cnf file and did a grant on it in mysql

[19:54:35] ikevin: i use myth during some years, and i didn't recommand to use it on debian because debian isn't multimedia oriented and often break myth

[19:57:14] ikevin: after a "apt-get remove --purge on mysql-server", make sure that directory /var/lib/mysql doesn't exist
[19:58:38] justdave: yeah, I did that.
[19:58:49] justdave: and then discovered it didn't recreate it when I installed it again and mysql wouldn't start
[19:58:59] justdave: had to create it and run mysql_install_db
[19:59:15] justdave: which only created the root and test users
[19:59:52] ** justdave was employed a mysql DBA in a previous life but did everything on RHEL so Ubuntu's stuff still confuses me a bit **
[20:00:48] ikevin: I had this problem, just in debian, using another distribs (like mint or ubuntu) and this kind of problem is resolved
[20:01:00] justdave: on RHEL the initscript creates the data directory on the first run if it doesn't exist
[20:01:47] justdave: with Ubuntu's "everything should just work" philosophy I would assume dpkg would have created it if it didn't exist before even getting that far :)
[20:01:58] justdave: but what do I know? :)
[20:03:43] ikevin: with ubuntu, "--purge" is suffisent to recreate default configuration while doing a second "install" for mysql
[20:04:14] ikevin: or using "rm -rf /var/lib/mysql && apt-get install --reinstall mysql-server"
[20:04:33] justdave: how do I find out what package owns a given file in ubuntu?
[20:04:48] justdave: (on RHEL it would be "rpm -qf filename"
[20:04:50] justdave: )
[20:05:37] tgm4883: justdave, 'dpkg -S /path/to/File' I think
[20:06:16] justdave: root@mythtv-server:/var/lib# dpkg -S /var/lib/mysql
[20:06:17] justdave: dpkg-query: no path found matching pattern /var/lib/mysql
[20:06:22] justdave: guess that answers that question
[20:06:34] ikevin: i don't use rpm based distrib during some years, do, you can use "apt-file" (if installed)
[20:06:36] justdave: (yeah, tried it on a couple things I know would be owned, and that was the correct command line to find it)
[20:06:56] ikevin: apt-file /var/lib/mysql/
[20:07:22] justdave: was trying to figure out if that was owned by something other than mysql-server that I'd need to reinstall

[20:10:20] clever: yeah, it worked on /usr/bin but not /usr/bin/
[20:10:27] justdave: mythtv-backend being one of them
[20:10:29] clever: odd that /var/lib/mysql doesnt show up
[20:10:40] ikevin: clever, it work on directory, so, not on directory created on the fly by dpkg
[20:10:47] justdave: right.
[20:11:15] justdave: so it means something somewhere needs to create the directory... which should be getting done by the initscript on first run in that case, or so you would think
[20:11:37] clever: justdave: root@theP4:/var/lib/dpkg/info# cat mysql-server.list
[20:11:49] clever: i find its sometimes usefull to bypass the tools and read these files directly
[20:12:32] justdave: dohoho.... mysql-server is a meta-package which depends on mysql-server-5.5
[20:12:44] justdave: so I have to apt-get remove --purge mysql-server-5.5 :)
[20:14:15] justdave: and yes, dpkg creates the directory and initially populates the database at install time
[20:14:22] justdave: just needed to reinstall the right package :)
[20:14:33] ikevin: using dpkg -L on all mysql package, it seems that directory /var/lib/mysql is created by a script on the fly

[20:18:34] justdave: yay, mythtv-backend is running

[20:20:53] clever: that one is simple to fix
[20:21:02] justdave: maybe Ubuntu pushed a mysql update that has that compile option missing or something stupid
[20:21:21] clever: you simply have to run mysql_tzinfo_to_sql on a timezone info dir
[20:21:49] clever: mysql_tzinfo_to_sql /usr/share/zoneinfo/ | mysql -u root -p mysql
[20:21:50] clever: i think
[20:21:59] justdave: yeah, did that before and it didn't solve it
[20:22:04] justdave: that was before reinstalling mysql though
[20:22:23] clever: you nuked it, so you have to do that step again
[20:22:42] justdave: yep, did it again, now it looks like it's staying up

[21:58:38] justdave: aha... I think I found the issue
[21:58:55] justdave: the shows which are showing auto-epire that aren't deleting have the machine's old hostname listed on them in the database
[21:59:01] justdave: machine got renamed a year or two ago
[22:00:39] justdave: got replaced, actually :) database moved to the new machine
[22:00:51] justdave: I remember having to do that hostname dance on other tables, apparently I missed that one
[22:02:22] gelberg_: my loggin table has reached 666MB. can i safely delete all rows?
[22:02:36] gelberg_: (in order to decrease my db size?)
[22:04:42] bill6502: gelberg_: are you referring to the mythconverg.logging table? It should be cleaned up by Housekeeping automatically.

[22:18:56] bill6502: gelberg_: by the way, there was a fix for the ticket we discussed (11318.) It was released this morning. I looked at your backtrace again and thought it might not be a match after all.So, if it isn't fixed by a new build, you'd best open a ticket in Trac.
[22:19:44] bill6502: I did try setting up my test host as a slave to my real backend and didn't see the problem. I only let it run for about 15 minutes though.
[22:19:52] gelberg_: bill6502: okay. i really hope it is a match, it's driving my parents mad. if the fix is simple i'll manually apply it to my 0.27-beta tree
[22:21:15] bill6502: its: 2013-08–23 d6b9469 Make sure the result is a list of exactly 8 bytes... Are you building from source?

[22:23:01] gelberg_: bill6502: yes, i am, i have a git tree with 0.27-beta checked out
[22:25:31] bill6502: gelberg_: I just did a git pull and it's the most recent commit, Rebuilding now.

[22:40:15] gelberg_: right, i need to scan dvb-t for new channels. any improvements or best practices in this area for 0.27-beta vs 0.26?
[22:40:27] gelberg_: this is my worst mythtv job
[22:44:13] gelberg_: here's my workflow:
[22:44:40] gelberg_: 1) Scan for channels 2) Scan existing transports 3) Ignore off-air channels 4) For conflicts, add an ‘a’ to the end of the channel number
[22:45:01] gelberg_: i mean, why do i get conflicts anyway? what does that even mean?
[22:45:09] gelberg_: then in mythweb:
[22:45:23] gelberg_: 1) Go through list in settings 2) Delete channels with blank channel numbers or underscores at the start.
[22:45:31] gelberg_: 3) Where there are duplicates, check channel numbers, delete one with old number, copy xmltvid
[22:45:42] gelberg_: surely there has to be a better way?

[22:56:14] bill6502: gelberg_: Can't see any specific improvements in the 0.27 release notes re: scanning. I only did it once while running 0.27-pre and saw no differences, although that was months ago. i just scan for channels and, thankfully don't have many conflicts. I do use mythweb to change some channels to be invisable. I'm also in the US and use Schedules Direct. Leaving the office now. Take care.
