[01:32:00] jr3us: greetings all. I was noticing the discussion regarding over the air broadcasts, and i highly recommend the digital home.ca OTA forums.
[01:32:22] jr3us: no spaces in digitalhome btw.
[01:33:10] jr3us: some very good information. Also recommended is tvfool.com to determine what kind of signals are in your area, and what you can expect to get.
[01:34:24] jr3us: their FAQs helped me a lot.
[01:38:47] sphery: jr3us: agreed... tvfool.com and antennaweb.org were very important in helping me get the right antenna and placement
[01:40:55] jr3us: i visited antennaweb.org though, and all they did.. was offer me different colored slices of pie.. :-)
[01:43:46] jr3us: the digitalhome.ca OTA forums were much more informative regarding antenna and amplifier info.
[01:44:21] jr3us: they are a canadian site.. but a lot of their users are interested in getting american tv stations across the border.
[01:47:10] jr3us: I am in NC, and currently using an antenna craft U4000; that is a UHF only antenna, and I use a pre amp on it since i have ~50 ft of cable to my tuners.
[01:47:43] jr3us: a low noise amp as indicated by one of the faqs at digitalhome.ca

[02:21:59] wagnerrp: are ferrite chokes really necessary? or are they just tossed in for bonus points?
[02:22:18] jr3us: sounds like a wrestling move to me...
[02:22:33] wagnerrp: those big hunks of iron on the end of cables
[02:22:39] jr3us: right
[02:23:12] jr3us: i see usb cables with them.. and without them…
[02:23:24] jr3us: interestingly.. newer cables don't have them
[02:23:27] wagnerrp: i've got a couple DVI cables with them, and they're just clumsily large
[02:23:54] jr3us: are they clamp on ones that you can remove?
[02:24:04] wagnerrp: no. i would have to cut them off
[02:24:16] Korny: With digital cables I don't see the point, they used to help with analog cables
[02:24:26] wagnerrp: all cables are analog
[02:24:31] jr3us: do you also have dvi cables with no choke?
[02:24:54] wagnerrp: none that are long enough
[02:24:56] jr3us: i'm wondering if your cables that have them are older cables...
[02:25:09] Korny: Fine, svideo and RCA cables then, vs dvi/hdmi
[02:25:12] jr3us: interesting re length
[02:25:31] jr3us: i have had ethernet cables with them on the cable
[02:26:03] wagnerrp: ive only ever once seen an ethernet cable with one, and that was like 15 years ago, bundled with a cisco ADSL modem

[02:26:18] jr3us: right
[02:26:54] jr3us: i'm thinking maybe the electronics on each end are getting 'better' and don't need the choke anymore...
[02:27:23] jr3us: kinda like when we went from IDE to SATA
[02:27:40] Korny: I'd guess its more the shielding is better
[02:27:42] Korny: but thats just me
[02:27:44] jr3us: I am not a EE
[02:27:51] jr3us: just swagging
[02:28:43] wagnerrp: i don't think you can actually buy dvi/hdmi cables from monoprice that don't have them
[02:29:24] jr3us: interesting.. i am looking at an hdmi cable i have that doesn't have one…
[02:29:30] jr3us: and a via cable that does..
[02:29:34] jr3us: vga even
[02:30:01] Korny: Whats a good place to buy pre terminated cat6 links? I've looked at amazon, and cables to go.
[02:30:32] wagnerrp: http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartme . . . ;cp_id=10232

[02:31:07] wagnerrp: bought a bunch of 3' cables from there a few years ago, along with a patch panel
[02:31:20] Korny: problem with amazon is reading the reviews on a lot of the cables makes it sound like the quality is hit or miss
[02:31:48] wagnerrp: problem with amazon is the average person writing the reviews is an idiot
[02:32:53] Korny: I won't argue with that
[02:33:21] wagnerrp: seems the longest link they have is 100'
[02:33:41] wagnerrp: although a i've heard cheaper consumer networking gear has trouble pushing much beyond that
[02:33:51] wagnerrp: even though the spec rates for 300
[02:34:17] Korny: My dlinks won't connect at 1000 at 100ft :/

[02:38:55] jr3us: can't mess them up hardly.. lol
[02:39:04] wagnerrp: 1' is almost too short to be useful
[02:39:23] ** jr3us thinks wiremgmt **
[02:39:32] jr3us: in stereo cabinet
[02:39:51] wagnerrp: in a stereo cabinet, anything less than 6' is a problem
[02:40:15] wagnerrp: you want enough length to be able to pull any component out, without having to feed the wire bundle from behind
[02:40:36] jr3us: just think.. 5 years ago.. network wasn't in the stereo.. only speaker cables an rca patch cables.. for me anyway!
[02:41:26] jr3us: my switch was on same lvl as the network devices… so i needed a couple 1 foot and a couple 2 foot.
[02:41:28] wagnerrp: RCA is heavily shielded, bundle and coil it
[02:41:41] jr3us: :-)
[02:41:56] jr3us: no matter now… am done with them.
[02:42:28] wagnerrp: the trouble is HDMI is not a particularly stiff connector
[02:42:44] wagnerrp: i keep having problems with them falling out of the back, due to tension from the bundle
[02:43:09] wagnerrp: they really aught to make clip-on HDMI plugs, like they do for SARA
[02:43:11] wagnerrp: SATA
[02:43:17] jr3us: agreed
[02:45:25] jr3us: my av tower has an amp at the bottom, then projector(hdmi video only)
[02:45:35] sheppard: so take tension off the line?
[02:45:54] jr3us: then blu ray, appletv, mythFE ,
[02:46:19] jr3us: all network stuff is on the blue ray/apple/myth shelf
[02:46:49] wagnerrp: sheppard: it's just that it's a huge bundle of wires. half a dozen HDMI cables, and a number of other A/V cables
[02:46:50] jr3us: so within a foot or 1 1/2 ft from switch on same shelf.
[02:46:56] wagnerrp: it's a lot of weight to pull from the back of the shelf
[02:47:02] jr3us: agreed wagnerrp

[02:47:11] wagnerrp: and which ever cable happens to be slightly shorter than the rest takes the load
[02:48:12] wagnerrp: plus the crappy RF antenna that are really too short to even reach from the back of the cabinet to the front

[02:49:18] wagnerrp: yes, but i'm talking about FM/AM antenna

[02:50:32] wagnerrp: no, the crappy wire and loop antenna for radio that come with just about any A/V receiver
[02:50:46] jr3us: oh
[02:51:14] jr3us: if fm, the tv antenna can provide the signal for your radio
[02:51:33] wagnerrp: well... not really
[02:51:40] wagnerrp: most TV these days is UHF
[02:51:50] wagnerrp: and a UHF antenna is a piss poor FM antenna
[02:52:01] jr3us: right.. but enough that is probably much better than a wire for fm/am
[02:52:23] jr3us: i do actually pick up hi vhf with my DB4 type antenna
[02:53:15] ** jr3us leaves the electrical side of it to the true EEs.. **
[02:54:05] wagnerrp: a UHF antenna will pick it up, but at a significantly reduced gain than a designed VHF antenna
[02:54:26] jr3us: agreed..
[02:55:17] jr3us: my uhf antenna tho is ~25 ft above ground.. and any am/fm antenna is maybe 7 ft above ground...
[02:55:36] jr3us: and the uhf is pre-amplified..
[02:56:03] ** Korny is lucky to live within 20 miles of his tv towers(well right now i"m so close that its actually hard to aim antenna's) **

[02:58:58] Korny: Hopefully it should work fine, I couldnt' get tvfool to recognize my address, but the other link I posted said I just needed a small antenna

[16:36:52] sphery: ubuntuaddicted: right, but it only runs automatically occasionally, when it's run by cron or startup/shutdown scripts, or before mythtv upgrades its database
[16:36:52] ubuntuaddicted: oh shit, i just realized my root partition is full
[16:37:06] ubuntuaddicted: thats most likely the problem right
[16:37:09] sphery: yep
[16:37:16] quantum: full root bites
[16:38:39] ubuntuaddicted: my mythbackend.log file was 5gb
[16:40:14] ubuntuaddicted: here's the output trying to restore again so far. http://pastebin.com/JstBpA6g
[16:40:19] quantum: once I create the playlist and delete it how do I know if it is working
[16:40:44] ubuntuaddicted: sphery, and now it returned this; ERROR: Unable to drop database.
[16:40:45] ubuntuaddicted: Can't drop database 'mythconverg'; database doesn't exist
[16:42:15] quantum: doesn't look like deleting the playlist really did anythin
[16:43:09] quantum: well it did disapear the show, but I am not sure it freeded the disk space
[16:46:03] quantum: is there a new version of the find_orphans script
[16:46:07] ubuntuaddicted: sphery, can you help me?
[16:46:10] quantum: the old one does not work
[16:52:19] quantum: is there a new version of find_orphans, the one I found online doesn't work
[16:52:58] quantum: www.mythtv.org/wiki/Find_orphans.py

[16:55:00] ubuntuaddicted: sphery, ok, i think i got it. i had to use the script to create an initial mythconverg database, I ran the backup but now I can't connect to it with mythweb which leads me to believe I have to open up external connections to other 192.168.0.* hosts
[16:55:18] quantum: is there any other way to clean up the recording database?
[16:56:21] tgm4883: ubuntuaddicted, that, or you need to check the credentials that mythweb has
[16:57:23] ubuntuaddicted: tgm4883, mythweb never had an issue connecting prior to me restoring the mythconverg database. what do I check exactly and how?

[17:00:38] ubuntuaddicted: tgm4883, well, i am trying to connect to mythweb from my main workstation which is on another computer NOT where mythtv is installed
[17:01:07] tgm4883: ubuntuaddicted, so did you check if external connections were allowed?
[17:01:56] ubuntuaddicted: tgm4883, how, they should be as I didn't change the mysql config file
[17:02:27] tgm4883: /etc/mysql/conf.d/mythtv.cnf I think
[17:02:35] tgm4883: look for bind-address
[17:02:50] ubuntuaddicted: tgm4883, ok, nevermind. i must have tried to access mythweb before the backend was completely fired up. it works now
[17:04:07] afm: anyone have xmbc as a frontend working with .27? i can't seem to get it to connect to the backend at all...
[17:04:29] ubuntuaddicted: boy was that a scare, no idea how my database got all screwed up and basically was blank. luckily I have that mythconverg-backup.pl thing running daily and was able to restore. only missed a few shows which I think I can find "some how" ;)

[17:09:34] tgm4883: and is definitely implying it
[17:10:15] ubuntuaddicted: i don't have hulu or netflix, and i only "thought" and didn't know for sure if the shows were available on their websites. i just checked and they are.
