[00:26:09] mroe: I hope I don't get flamed... I've looked at the wiki and the FAQ but I don't see any kind discussion regarding sizing a backend properly for particular usage
[00:34:28] Muzer (Muzer!~muzer@cpc3-ando6-2-0-cust90.15-1.cable.virginmedia.com) has quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[00:36:41] tonsofpcs: what do you mean by 'sizing'?
[00:37:44] tonsofpcs: mroe: ^
[00:38:22] mroe: computing power
[00:38:27] mroe: cpu/ram
[00:39:50] tonsofpcs: what is your usage case that you're concerned?
[00:40:05] tonsofpcs: (backend doesn't really need much for normal uses)
[00:40:07] mroe: I'm going to have 3 HD tuners
[00:40:20] mroe: with comm flagging and transcoding
[00:40:45] tonsofpcs: transcoding is the only real bottleneck and I imagine taht a slower CPU / less RAM will just make it take longer.
[00:41:00] tonsofpcs: also, I need to figure out how to transcode on my system....
[00:41:14] mroe: but flagging + transcoding + recording simultaneously won't be a problem?
[00:41:21] mroe: on any cpu?

[00:43:22] tonsofpcs: I run 4+ records from ATSC over a network (HDHR Duals) without issue. Computer is a Q6600 w/ 4GB of RAM. It also runs a frontend 24/7. Let's see what CPU is at...
[00:43:44] mroe: Q6600 is a quad core?
[00:44:05] disputin (disputin!~sean@2001:470:9758:1:9987:697d:7dca:99bf) has quit (Quit: Leaving.)
[00:44:14] tonsofpcs: yea, but it's an old quad corre (and the slowest they sold – 2.4GHz Core2 Quad)
[00:44:18] mroe: I'm thinking about a Pentium D with 2GB of ram (or I have to buy new hardware)
[00:44:39] mroe: so 2 gens older than yours
[00:45:02] tonsofpcs: load averages are <1, memory gets used but I imagine that's more frontnend stuff than backend. I also have some other background tasks running
[00:45:06] mroe: I can probably get more ram, but it is still significantly older than yours
[00:45:06] tonsofpcs: *kills some*
[00:45:42] tonsofpcs: backend is using 2% of a single CPU and 1.4% of my memory...
[00:45:56] mroe: when it's doing what?
[00:46:11] mroe: transcoding is going to clobber the cpu
[00:46:15] tonsofpcs: commflag has its own thread. I think I have three things recording right now.
[00:46:26] mroe: and from what I understand commflagging is pretty intense as well
[00:46:40] tonsofpcs: yes, it is, but it iis niced 'up' so it has less priority and won't bother things
[00:46:44] mroe: so my pentium D is dual core non-HT'ed
[00:46:57] mroe: which means two threads
[00:47:47] tonsofpcs: I was running backend on this Core Duo T2500 (2GHz) which is loaded down without mythtv running and didn't really have a problem. (I moved it for storage and management reasons)
[00:48:00] tonsofpcs: I really don't think you'll have a problem with it.

[00:48:23] mroe: I'm just surprised there isn't a wiki article about it
[00:48:38] tonsofpcs: probably because it'll run on most anything

[00:48:57] tonsofpcs: and it was fine.

[05:45:05] rumblebumble (rumblebumble!~sean@S010600151794152d.wp.shawcable.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[05:50:17] rumblebumble: Hey guys, I just wanted to make a suggestion. I am using hd-pvrs on a mythbuntu box. My wife uses the system and sometimes is impatient while using it. She will try to tune a new channel before the existing one has has finished. In many cases this will cause the system to crash. I just wanted to constructively suggest that perhaps this area of code could use some beefing up.
[05:52:47] wagnerrp: tune a new channel before the existing one has finished? i'm not sure what you mean
[05:53:14] wagnerrp: interrupt one tune attempt with another?
[05:53:27] jpabq: rumblebumble: patches are welcome. Foregoing that, create a ticket with a BT and mythbackend & frontend logs. http://code.mythtv.org/trac/wiki/TicketHowTo
[05:54:56] rumblebumble: I just mean that she hits "watch tv". While it is tuning, she plug in another channel and presses enter. That can cause it to crash
[05:55:16] wagnerrp: cause what? frontend? backend?
[05:55:27] wagnerrp: does it actually crash or just drop back to the main menu?
[05:55:54] rumblebumble: sorry, the frontend, it stays on a black screen
[05:56:05] rumblebumble: it requires a reboot
[05:56:15] wagnerrp: so it deadlocks trying to receive a stream from the backend that won't come
[05:56:18] rumblebumble: the backend seemed to recover fine
[05:56:22] wagnerrp: restarting the frontend would fix it
[05:56:27] rumblebumble: It does
[05:56:36] wagnerrp: i mean the process, not the physical machine
[05:57:52] rumblebumble: Well it is my wife, so the machine gets rebooted
[06:01:24] rumblebumble: jpabq, I should try to contribute more, I do not know where to start. I guess this is as good of a place as any :)
[06:01:36] jpabq: I just tried to reproduce that with the latest devel version, and did not have that problem.
[06:02:36] jpabq: Instead, myth just ignore the channel change.
[06:03:12] rumblebumble: I was not running the development version. I will look into it more as well.
[06:04:19] jpabq: The latest devel version of Myth has had it socket code (communication) completely re-written, and that may have "fixed" that problem.
[06:06:33] rumblebumble: jpabq, That is excellent, do you mind me asking what it is coded in
[06:07:05] jpabq: Myth? c++
[06:08:29] Igramul: I have a strange phenomena: Some of my dvb cards cannot get a lock on about one third of the transports. Rebooting the system seems to help. Is this known?
[06:08:50] rumblebumble: Yeah, myth, thanks, I always wish I would have learned some C++
[06:09:19] Igramul: rumblebumble: The basics are not that difficult. ;)
[06:14:15] Igramul: By the way: Is the current development release stable enough for home use? That would make it easier to contribute (I only have one system with DVB tuner cards)?
[06:18:21] jpabq: Igramul: I can't really answer that. Seems to work well for me, but if you use different tuners than I do, or use it in a different way than I do, you might have issues that I don't experience.

[06:19:58] Igramul: jpabq: I guess the biggest issue might be the frontend. I'd like to fucus on the backend. But the frontend refuses to start when it detects a newer backend version, right?
[06:20:42] jpabq: Yes, they must match.
[06:21:30] Igramul: hmmm... then I would have to compile on two machines or distribute the new files to my living-room machine.
[06:21:35] tank-man (tank-man!1000@S010600121729c6a1.vc.shawcable.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[06:23:19] Igramul: The living-room machine is a wife-critical installation with corresponding uptime-requirements...
[06:31:49] jpabq: Igramul: if you are serious about it, there are ways.... Create a dev user on your backend machine. For that dev user, create a .mythtv/config.xml file with <DBName>mythconvergdevel</DBName>. Compile myth and install it in an alternate location (e.g. /opt) and make sure /opt shows up in that users path before /usr. Then as that user, you can run a separate instance of mythbackend/mythfronted/mythtv-setup that uses that alternate DB.
[06:32:13] jpabq: Note that <DBName> shows up in .mythtv/config.xml twice.
[06:36:01] jpabq: You can also use the MYTHCONFDIR environment variable to point to the config.xml directory location to use, instead of doing it as a special user, but I have found that to be dangerous — run the 0.26 verison of myth with that set to the wrong place, and you had better have a good DB backup available.

[21:39:58] wagnerrp: sure, but mythfilldatabase is designed to interface with schedules direct directly
[21:40:37] wagnerrp: even if you were using the xmltv grabber for SD, you would still have mythfilldatabase run the grabber internally to get the xmltv output, rather than feeding it a stored file
[21:40:38] Dizzle: dont feel like paying for schedules direct for the 15 or so channels im using it for :/
[21:41:11] wagnerrp: then the only alternative is EIT data coming straight off the broadcast feed

[21:44:12] wagnerrp: and as i said, if you are using a grabber, you have mythfilldatabase call the grabber internally

[21:51:20] tgm4883: wagnerrp, I thought just US+Canada
[21:51:35] wagnerrp: mainland europe has a similar paid subscription service as schedules direct
[21:58:43] stuartm: they also have pretty decent OTA guide data
[22:00:51] stuartm: the situation in the US is fairly unique in that the network fragmentation (lots of affiliates, few nationwide broadcasters) means that the compilation of guide data becomes a very expensive business and networks are unwilling to carry the cost
[22:01:03] zombor: anyone use mythweb with 0.26? all my EPG times are off by 6 hours (it's reading from UTC). i have the right timezone set in php.ini

[22:02:57] tgm4883: zombor, I use mythweb with 0.26 (as I'm sure lots of people do) and I don't have that issue
